I wonder if the "desperate" and the "dumb" were so critical of him when they needed access to funds and his bank was their only life line? Its easy to look down your nose if you don't count yourself among the "desperate" or "dumb" or see these transactions from their perspective. His business took risks on people no one else would. It seems like for most, it was a symbiotic relationship. No doubt many of these deplorable were ruined but he didn't put them in that situation any more than the less desperate and brighter folks that I've known who find themselves in financial straights after borrowing from less predatory lenders.

They didn't cause the situation to begin with but they also make the situation worse in many cases. People are generally in those situations because they make bad decisions. Taking out a $1,000 credit card with tons of fees and insane interest does not help someone long term.

My guess is it was more our issue than his that we couldn’t figure out how to make it work where he would’ve opened up his coffers for U athletics. too. The multitude of organizations he donated to in South Dakota figured it out with no material issues.

It was said in another post that if the corruption was minimized in Minnesota that the state could found the U of M nil. But run it to the ground, I don’t live in your state.

Touched a nerve. Close to home?
Can you give me a real-life example of a 79% interest rate credit card as beneficial to the borrower? How often are these arrangements beneficial in any way. Some times it’s better to take the punch bowl away. There is a reason some institutions love South Dakota’s friendly laws.
I suppose a case could be made for drug dealers as well.

Yup, the person who has no other option. A bad option is better than no option. Would I borrow money on those terms? No. Would I borrow money to someone who's only option was someone who would only lend on those terms? Hell no. But I get the folks who could get the credit were glad for it. And to borrow money to non-collectible, judgement proof borrowers, there needs to be risk for the reward.

I'd be curious to know where you stand on student loan forgiveness. We have what appears to be millions of less than desperate, supposedly not dumb college graduates, who borrowed money on very favorable terms who have been clamoring for student loan forgiveness. Should we take that punch bowl away?

I’m not a fan of making somebody else pay back your student loans or any other loans for that matter. I’d give a prospective student loan borrower my honest advice whether to make that leap.

OK, my turn. How do you feel about 50 year mortgages. Good idea? Greatest idea ever? This is fun.
