Syracuse it is in Maui

Can't let an opportunity to piss on Tubby for no good reason go by now, can we?

and you can't pass up the opportunity to continuously point out when people "piss on Tubby"... Not sure which is worse, but I do know which is more annoying!

If Whitehead and Newtons only official together is to Minnesota then I think we get commitments from them. It really would be sweet to have them cheering on the team during the game!

As I've said many times, as soon as people quit pissing on Tubby's corpse, I'll quit countering their ridiculousness.

Thanks for the editorial.

Gophers are going to have trouble with the size of Syracuse. Should be a good test, looking forward to seeing how they deal with it.

Syracuse is going to have trouble with our backcourt just like we are going to have trouble with their depth in the frontcourt. May the best team win!

Interesting bracket and a chance for the Gophers to play 2 major conference teams and maybe a 3rd. This will be an interesting test for the Gophers but they should have a good chance to win 2 of the three games in this event and possibly all 3. It would be a great starting point for Coach Pitino if he could grab the nations attention by winning this tourny.

It's nice to have confidence but WHOA here guys. I just hope we win a game or two. Remember, the experts don't figure on the Gophers having a good season. While the experts may be wrong, I'd be surprised if Syracuse is not a big favorite coming into this one.

And for those talking about "good thing Tubby's gone, he couldn't figure out a zone" - maybe so - but are you insinuating that Pitino will have transformed the Gophers from a (non-utilized) running team to a running team that suddenly shoots he lights out against the half-court zone? Perhaps, but usually these transitions take some time. The beginning of this season might actually be rougher than the middle and end.

Thank god we fired Tubby. Can you imagine going up against Syracuse's 2-3 defense with Tubby's zone offense (or lack there of)?

Here we go again! Wonder why I don't shut up about Tubby...because of people like you.

Well at the least the legit non confrence schedule will still be in tact....syracuse is supposed to have a good backcourt this should be a good test to see how good our two studs really are,,,,if were gonna shoot a lot of threes there is not better defense to practice against than the syracuse 2-3...... this game should give us a grasp at what our real expectations should be

At least we can all agree that his coaching career is dead. :D

I think the jab at last years and the previous 6's was warranted given the competition's tendency to have a killer 2-3 and Tubbmasters propensity to crumble against one.

However, I completely agree with the overwhelming need to point out Tubby is gone at every corner. Perhaps the comment could have left the word tubby out of it or something, but I think its a valid point. Had we gotten this matchup last year at this time I would have said loss no doubt.

Agreed. The unprovoked loving/hating of Tubby can be obnoxious.

However, as you said, this was an appropriate time IMO and wasn't even that bad. I liked Tubby as much as the next guy, but he was horrendous at either knowing how to beat a zone and/or getting his players to do it.

Just because he was fired doesn't mean he was perfect here. Had Madtown said "Thank God Tubby was fired so we can finally beat good competition in the non conference" I'd understand the backlash - Tubby DID do that. He did NOT successfully get his team to beat a zone.

syracuse will have a lineup of something like
PG: tyler enis, freshman, ranked #20 in the nation
SG: trevor cooney: junior, didnt do very much last year, top 100 player in HS
SF: CJ fair, averaged 14 PPG 7 RPG, easily their best player
PF:rakeem christmas, junior, didnt do much but top 25 in the nation in HS and averaged 1.8 BPG
C: Dajuan coleman, sophmore, top 15 recruit in the nation last year

CJ fair is their only solidified player from last year, everybody else did nothing last year but was highly touted in HS

This looks like a match up of two unknowns for the first game in Maui.

If anyone as expectations that a down year for the Gophers is going to walk away with a victory against Syracuse you might want to check yourself. It will be a great barometer for a young coach on a big stage. But my expectations are not very high for next year. If we get hot we will have a great shot of shooting our way out of the zone, however, Syracuse is going to be long, athletic, and cause havoc for a team with a new coach, new scheme, and poor ball control. Hopefully we keep it competitive.

Agree, Doc.

Sometimes in games like this the team with the best player on the floor wins the game. Hopefully 'Dre is more "on" than Fair.

Am glad it's not the season opener. The Gophers will have about 4 (maybe 5) games under their belt before Maui, albeit likely not vs. teams anywhere near the caliber of the Orangemen.

I guess I don't understand why so many claim this is going to be a down year for the Gophers. Yes, we have a new Head Coach and staff, Mbakwe and Williams are gone, but we also have some damned good players returning.

I look for us to have a damned fun, interesting, entertaining, and successful year as Coach Pitino starts his "upper level" career with a bunch of kids who have already bought into his ethic.

Go Gophers!!!

Fair points, our returning guards are as good as we've ever had in the past 6 years.

However, my biggest concerns are that we will be very weak upfront with no one returning that had a major impact last year, and the whole system is new. The new system also plays to last years weaknesses, ball handling and ball pressure. IF Pitino can get these guys to buy in early, we could have a decent year. I'm just having trouble visualizing us playing uptempo and not turning the ball over alot. Also cannot see us grabbing offensive rebounds at the rate we did last year, thus limiting our possessions. We are going to need to make up with turnovers, which is precisely what he is trying to accomplish.

If you have even read any of the players' comments in interviews, they already have bought in, and are looking forward to having a lot more fun playing the game of basketball, and run and gun is this Coach Pitino's philosophy. (aka Big Mo losing 50 pounds to be a contributing part of this.) 94 X 50 feet of pure unadulterated hell is gonna be fun to watch, win or lose. HELL HATH NO FURY COMPARED TO PITINO'S ATTACK.

Go Gophers!!!

Put me in the camp that really doesn't have a clue what to expect from the upcoming season.

It's fine to be excited, but at the same time, we are taking about a team with a new coach, new system, and at least 2 new starters (maybe more). Honestly, I would be very surprised if the Gophs come out flying at the start of the season. I strongly suspect there will be an adjustment period, so I really don't expect a lot in the non-conference part of the season. I just hope the team is able to hit its stride by the start of the conference schedule.

Bottom line - the Gophs will be a definite underdog against Syracuse. If they win, Great - but if I had to bet my own money, I don't think I'd bet on the Gophs in that game (unless you gave me REALLY good odds......)

Oh I agree, they are definately buying in, and I guess I'm the one that put the "if" in front of the buying in part. But executing is a lot different than buying into a style.

I'm as excited and hopeful as the next guy, maybe not as excited as the good Dr. at 1am in the morning, but I'm excited. I still have tempered any expectations of a top 3 finish like I had at this point last year.

Couldn't agree more... Last year at this point it was top 3 in the B1G or bust, then they went on to start the season 15-1 and I was saying elite 8 or bust. In the end, I could see the Gophers Making it in the tourney as a 12 seed or being a 1-4 seed in the NIT, but I don't see us doing any better than that. Go Gophers!
