Had a chance to watch it Mon nite(dvr).

Dark Starr(who is more full of bs than anyone) stated that he had heard from people(later said it was three people) in the U athletic dept, that Brewster was the most hated person or coach in the athletic dept.

Sid said it was not true and Reusse said he had heard some things about Brewster as well.

Thought it was a pretty strong statement by Dark Starr.

Can anyone shed any light on this. Just curious.

I would guess that the combination of being highly paid (for the department), tempermental and having a terrible record must have been a winning formula. There were rumors about him going after Maturi last year, I believe as well. Didn't Souhan write about that?

It's commonly known that Brewster ripped Maturi a new one in front of a large group of people over some marketing scheme aimed at filling the Dome for a game in 2007 or 2008 (can't remember). I've also heard he rubbed people the wrong way in the athletic department and he had nothing to back up his arrogance (i.e. good team with a winning record).

If that's true, it's one of a few positives in Brewster's career here. If the athletic department couldn't stand him, that's a VERY good thing. Too much complacency and pro non revenue sport politics in that dept right now, they really need to clean house at some point and it starts at the top with our spineless AD.

This is exactly what I've heard/seen as well. He fooled a lot of people, but not many that worked closely with him.

Holtz was a tyrant around Bierman

My sister worked around him. But sometimes you need that to shake things up. But you better be able to back it up on the field.

I heard he could be a prickly and arrogant from someone who worked on his FSN North show.

What does it mean to be the most hated person in the athletic department? Is there a big competition? Are people especially hated in the athletic department? Saying that he is the most hated implies that there are a number of other hated people in the athletic department. I don't know how liked or disliked anyone is in the athletic department. I do know that where ever you go, you can always find someone who doesn't like someone if you look hard enough. I don't know if Brewster is especially disliked in the athletics department, but I'm skeptical of people who claim that he is especially hated, those people generally are grinding their own axes.

It makes perfect sense that Brewster would rub some the wrong way in the greater athletic department. Here's a guy that is passionate about his job, and could have put in more hours than anyone else. Brew worked with a sense of urgency, something that a Maturi led department probably didn't do much. I can see how these differing cultures could clash and see how Brewster could get irritated if some things weren't getting done to his liking.

Unless Brewster was breaking NCAA or University rules, I think the bigger question is how was he perceived by the football staff and players, not the athletic department.

+1 I would probably act the same way in that 9 to 5, punch the clock environment. That department needs to be cleaned out (from marketing to the ticket office) as I am disappointed time and time again by their performance. His mistake is he didn't win. If he wins, no one gives a rip about this.

Ok, you've got me curious. Do you have any specific examples you want to give? I'm not saying I disagree with you, I am just interested. I assure you, I'm not trolling.... You seem upset - and quite possibly with good reason. Can you expand?

Brewster failed for four years, the athletic dept has been failing for forty.
I've heard that if you put ten of them in the same boat you'd have ten people all rowing in different directions.
They should worry about doing their own jobs better instead of telling bitter columnists how mean Brewster was.

I'm a pretty regular viewer of The Sports Show and I wouldn't too much stock in what Dark Star had to say, he clearly has shown he does not like Brewster and had a vendetta against him. Not sure why Dark Star hated him so much, I think maybe Brewster blew him off for an interview or appearance and that might have started it.

I could be wrong though, if Sid denied it there is probably some truth to it.

Being a coach isn't a popularity contest in the athletic department. How many people don't like J. Robinson? I'm willing to bet that there are a few people very put off by some of his views.

That being said, it's not ego if you're good at what you do. Coach Brewster was not good here.

If Sid denied it? LOL Come on, Sid has zero credibility in 2010. When is the last time he did anything important for journalism in Minnesota..... maybe 1998. Also Sid would never rip a current or former gopher coach.

Have a pretty good connection high up in the athletic office and heard that from day one Brewster was like a bull in a china shop.

There are a lot of strong personalities in the Gophers athletic program, many of which have been there a long time and have been very successful (J Robinson, John Anderson to name two). And there is always going to be a need to recognize that some compromise among the various coaching staffs is necessary as they all have their own agendas - some give and take within the ranks. It's one thing to be aggressive in trying to get what you think is best for your team, it is another to run roughshod over anyone or anything that gets in your path, burning bridges, pissing people off - a "my way or the highway" mentality.

This is the problem then. It should be the head football/basketball/maybe hockey coaches way or the highway, no exceptions, no other way about it.

+1. I don't think Jim Tressel has to compromise with any other coach at Ohio State and they have one of the strongest athletics programs in the nation.

My buddy is a U of M cop who works at many of the MN games, including road trips, and he thought Brew was pretty cool. Never had a bad thing to say about him, for what its worth...

I could be wrong but I don't think even one Gopher player or former player has ever criticized or complained about Brewster during the entire time he was coach.

You can't write something like that and then not give an example. What have you 'seen' specifically?

You just can't find entertainment anywhere else like you can on on the Sports Show:

Exactly... For years I've been waiting for one of them to crack or break one of those coffee cups on that Cambria countertop...Have they not ever heard of coasters?? That video shows Mike Max taking a drink that looks very suspect, but yet funny for his bad acting. Max is really poor as the 'host' but the comedy value is off the charts, especially when they all start talking at once. One of the worst TV productions going (which strangely adds to it's comedic value) but when Sid gets all riled-up at Dark or Pat, it's very good comedy, even though it's not meant to be.

I find it mostly unwatchable. Tried it for about 5 minutes on three different occasions hoping to get a shred of insight into the local sports scene - ha!

Sid is so far gone that his responses are mostly well-worn cliches that he has been talking about for years ("new stadium is not going to improve the team," "no one wants to coach here," etc.). I would not be surprised if he has trouble hearing as he just blathers regardless if others are talking.

The rest of the panel (especially Reusse) seems to just raise their eyes as if to imply "here we go again" whenever Sid speaks (which is far too often).

The comedic value of the production is there, but that got very old in a manner of minutes.
