No matter what all the people say on this board about all the reasons its not a big deal, it is. It is absolutely pathetic that 35-40% of the students didn't show up to the game on homecoming. Sorry, no excuses, pathetic. I'm sure mommy and daddy footed the bill, so it doesn't matter to them anyways.

Embarrassing, pathetic, pitiful effort from the students today.

The student section was ridiculously pathetic today. It was probably the worst student section I've seen in 10 years. Hey students, I'd love to be paying student prices for season tickets and watch the games on campus in our state-of-the-art stadium, but I had to spend those years watching them play in the Dome. Quit being little bitches and get to the games; you get a little more than two dozen home games in your entire collegiate career. The Cal game's student section sucked. The Wisconsin one did too. How difficult is it to wake up by 9:45 and walk a few blocks to the stadium?!?

The only reason targeting the student section works today is because it was clearly visible how many seats were empty in the upper deck. I hate the students that didn't show up as much as anyone, but there were just as many regular ticket holders that didn't show up to the game. Late, or at all. Same goes for last week when the student section WAS full. And it was not 35-40% missing. Half the upper deck was empty (from what I could see in 235), with the lower bowl full, which to me means roughly 20-25% missing. I saw a LOT of empty seats in the regular season ticket holders areas. Just keeping it in perspective.

That was quite the money post, I have to admit. It is quite maddening that the students just can't quite seem to get it yet. Oh well, I guess that is the result of mediocre football the last few decades. I mean seriously, pound a few Diesels down and you won't feel a thing when in this weather

I guess i'm glad my group gets our seats 90 mins before kickoff. We can't even tell how empty the student section is behind us.

Just my opinion, but if we come back and beat wisky... that section is full.

I saw at least ten students who had no chance of getting admitted into the game imo. They were very entertaining as I walked to the stadium. Two of the girls fell down hard and laughed it off. I applauded them for giving such a good show. Now, I am ashamed I encouraged that type of behavior. I'm sure they were a few of the no-shows. Next time I will frown at them.

In all seriousness: The students who were able to hold their booze and make it into the stadium...thank you. Those who couldn't are as lame as can be. Terrible fans.

With 4.00 left to go in the game

Sorry, students. This is pathetic.

Sorry, students. This is pathetic.

Show the rest of the stadium with 10 minutes to go, people are already leaving in droves.

That being said, another poor showing by the student section. All you gotta do is layer up!

pathetic! hey students: people are VERY easily making you look like a bunch of little bitches with today's poor showing. time to prove all of us wrong! looks like you need to get on the case of your fellow U students who acted like giant f-ing pussies today.

I see your point with that picture, but with four minutes left, the major issue is all the people who leave early. Especially in a not close game.

And when it comes to all the people who leave early, I'm gonna call out the old people. Especially now that we're not in the dome anymore.

here is what i do if i am the gophers communications dept. you get with a couple of the local tv sports reporters who support the U football program (mark rosen, eric perkins) and put together a 60-second spot (with close-ups showing the faces of those who repeatedly leave early) for the 10PM news for the sole purpose of shaming them. nothing like embarassing people in front of their friends to set them straight.

you know you like this silly idea! :pig:

We (students) can't fill 10k seats and in a "what have you done for me lately" kinda world, the Gophs gotta win for students to really really want to go.
(I was in the 2nd row today)

Ok. It's college football. College students are sort of at the heart of what happens at college football games. Everyone else might suck as well, but the students should a) bother showing up and b) stick around for most of the game. I'd say it's almost their responsibility.

Are they leaving early to beat the traffic or something? I seriously don't get it.

the big ten weather factor will weed out those types just fine. they will be replaced with younger fans (in their late 20's, 30's, 40's) with more vigor who could give a rip about a little chilly weather.

18 to 22 year old students don't have such an excuse. they just need to show up.

They weren't the greatest, but do you remember that past few years? At least the student section was filled with GOLD for the Wisconsin game and not red. We haven't had the tradition in recent years that encourages the students to come out no matter how the team performs. It is a work in progress, but it IS improving.

i know your just venting but do you really think that students who dont go to the games are coming on this site...seriously. and i thought the student section was pretty good for both cal and wisconsin don't know where your coming from on that point. On another note, unless you go with a fun group of people the games really do suck in the upper deck. I dont think i have heard the band once this whole year it's no excuse but it does take a lot out of the experience...same goes with the music volume, a facegroup was made with 3000 student members in it that wanted a song played at the end of the 3rd quarter to be played and no one coul even here the damn thing.......there's my two cents

for anyone who might know or knows how to find out: they didn't actually turn down the volume on the PA speakers (because of the idiots over in st. paul that complained) did they? if they did turn it down then shame on them. screw the whiners who are not even living in the city of minneapolis.

You think it's the responsibility of students to attend a football game just because they happen to go to the school? I'm not sure about that.

I think it's up to the university to cultivate a program that inspires that kind of loyalty, it's not incumbent upon anyone to attend just because they're getting an education there. Ostensibly the first purpose of college is learning not football.

Khaliq...what a dumb statement.....of course it isn't their job to attend a game.....but who bought the tickets? The f'n giz trap down by the river? A student bought the tickets dumb azz. A students azz need to be in the seat.

You sound like a pleasant fellow and someone I could have a meaningful conversation with.

Come GoGophers2005 and tell me stories of your adventures with Giz.

Are all tickets scanned? If so, they could put in a rule that if someone doesn't use their ticket for 2 or 3 games, then they can't get them the next year. The ticket system should show what tickets were used and not used for each game. I would love for that to happen for all season ticket holders. If your ticket isn't used, then you have to give them up.

other than the giz part, it is hard to argue with that logic. you decide you are going to take up a finite student season ticket spot in the stadium then your ass or a fellow student's ass needs to be in that seat during each home game. it really isn't that hard. there is no "good excuse" for not making it happen 7 times a year.

Not defending the students here, but the regular ticket holders didn't do anything to be proud of either. To start off with, probably 10% of the seats were never filled. It's just not as noticeable because they're spread out. Second, did anyone notice how many people in the shady seats did not even return for the second half? Not impressive.

Sure there is. If you purchase a ticket and you're not happy with the product you're receiving then it's perfectly fine to give a game a pass. A ticket purchases you the right to attend a game, not an obligation to. Furthermore I took the statement I responded to as an overarching implication that the student body has an obligation to fill the stadium. I don't agree with that.

The good news is if someone purchases tickets and doesn't use them that means it's highly unlikely they'll renew and those tickets will go back into the pool next season for students that may make use of them.

I personally don't buy tickets I don't intend to use, but that's just me.

Please explain what type of "product" people that purchased tickets were expecting?? I for one have had my expectations surpassed thus far????

You seem like the type of guy I'd love to kick in the face

It's funny that people are actually surprised by the fact that students didn't show up at 11am, when it was 35 degrees out, to watch a team that has lost two games already. Also, homecoming doesn't mean jack to students anymore, so that is not enough incentive to go to the game either.

Did you really expect a new stadium to fix our fair-weather fan base? Minnesota is going to have crappy fans forever. In every sport.
