The University of Minnesota will present the results of two separate investigations into its athletics department at a special Board of Regents meeting on Dec. 8, the Star Tribune has learned.

One report will detail an external review commissioned by the U into sexual harassment and equal rights complaints in the athletics department, and the other will show the results of an internal financial audit under former athletic director Norwood Teague, said regents Chair Dean Johnson.

Johnson said he doesn’t know anything about the contents of the two reports but that whatever needs fixing will be fixed. “We’re going to have a cleaner, more accountable department of athletics — as we would expect of any college or department at the university,” Johnson said Monday.

Gail Klatt, the U’s internal auditor, declined to comment Monday on the financial audit. “It’s a work in progress,” she said. “It’s not complete.”

University of Minnesota President Eric Kaler fielded praise and pointed criticism following the resignation of Norwood Teague as athletic director, with Kaler’s staff scrambling at times to control the flow of information to the public.

A review of hundreds of pages of correspondence and other materials requested by news organizations shows that some members of the university’s Board of Regents questioned why they did not learn sooner of the sexual harassment complaints against Teague. The documents also offer a glimpse of the intense pressure faced by Kaler and the U’s communications team after the Aug. 6 resignation.

In the days after Teague’s resignation, regent Michael Hsu wrote his colleagues to express concern that the board had been left out of important decisions related to the controversy. He complained that Kaler did not inform regents of the allegations against Teague for more than two weeks, including during a meeting he had with board Chairman Dean Johnson in mid-July.

Then, when Johnson and David McMillan, the board’s vice chairman, were notified Aug. 1, they did not fill in their board colleagues until five days later. Hsu said the board should have made the decision to hire an outside investigator to review the Teague situation and that it should not be run through the U’s Office of General Counsel “because of potential conflicts.”

“This incident creates significant risks to our reputation and also potentially financial liabilities,” Hsu wrote. “We also need to be clear that the full board is engaged and informed.”

MN Daily: Internal emails reveal concern over U’s response to Teague misconduct

Emails released Monday by the University of Minnesota offer a glimpse into the school’s strategy for handling the resignation of its former athletic director.

More than three months after Norwood Teague resigned because he sexually harassed several women, the University released about 1,500 pages of documents, across which regents, donors and alumni show both criticism of and support for the school’s reaction to Teague’s resignation.

The University will also present the findings of two investigations into the school’s athletics department on Dec. 8, according to multiple media outlets.

While some members of the University Board of Regents were supportive, Regent Michael Hsu said in emails that the board should have been informed about Teague’s situation earlier.

“[University President Eric Kaler] did not inform anyone at the Board for over two weeks,” he said in the email to the board’s chair and vice chair. “[A]pparently he did not see this as something important enough that you should be aware of.”

I was amused to see that Jay Weiner was Kaler's speechwriter. For people with short memories, Jay Weiner used to write for the Strib. He was the guy who kept writing articles claiming that sporting events had no economic impact, because the people who went to the game would have spent that money anyway. he also wrote a book about the Twins' efforts to get a new stadium, ripping the Pohlads.

And for the most part that is absolutely true.

99% of the predicted economic impact are total bs. They are put out by the sports entities themselves.

The University of Minnesota will hear the results of two independent investigations into the athletics department during a special Board of Regents meeting Dec. 8. In the meantime, documents released by the school this week offered a glimpse at topics likely to be addressed.

Among hundreds of receipts that had been submitted by coaches and administrators, and were released Monday and Wednesday, are invoices for $2,298.85 to transport men's basketball coach Richard Pitino's dog from Florida, and $1,984 in clothing, shoes and hairstyling for women's basketball coach Marlene Stollings.

In each case, the university paid the bill.

$2,300 to get Pitino's dog from FL to MN? Shoot, I would have done it for a grand......

That must be a heck of a dog. Did the U have to pay for the chicken suit for Richie's brother?

Guessing that was part of his relocation expense? Still an expensive car ride for a dog lol maybe the car had a couple of their boxes in it too?
 



Neither of those expenses are it of the norm. Only our media would claim it is.
 

There are companies that specialize in relocation of dogs. They ensure/ guarantee the dog will arrive safely with zero hassle to the owner.

They are expensive and yes there are cheaper ways. However, for executives suddenly on the move, it is how you do things. it is not like Pitino can take a few days off recruiting to fly to Florida and drive back with Fido. A regular person flies the doggie up for $200 but a regular person doesn't get paid seven figures.

I have seen dog relocation expenses (only once for $900 ten years ago) covered in my own field where beginning professionals earn mid 5 figures. It is part of attracting candidates to an area that is hard to recruit.

Come on guys. Relocation of pets is common expenses for hiring. I even had my dog relocation costs paid for by my employer. The costs can cover a week or two of kennels, vet fees, air plane shipment, delivery, etc... It is not as cheap as you think, and a couple of grand for a Million+ comp package is nothing.

Also, getting your new woman's coach "presentable" for a B1G press conference and the next few days of interviews, meet and greets, etc is money well worth spent. She is representing the U and first impression mean a lot.

Stop griping about not being "big time" if you are not ready to pay for being "big time".
