Richard Pitino might as well be the transfer king after what he pulled off in this late college basketball signing period.

Three starting spots open. Three transfers committed to fill them. All of that happened within a span of three months, ending with Utah transfer Both Gach picking his home state Gophers on Monday.

If the waiver gods bless the Gophers in the next several months, then Gach will be in the starting lineup for the season opener in November. Same goes for fellow junior and Drake transfer Liam Robbins. Western Michigan’s Brandon Johnson is already a projected U starter as a graduate transfer.

College basketball recruiting classes led more by transfers than high schoolers could become the new norm in the not-so-distant future. Instead of having to sit out a year under NCAA transfer rules, increasing numbers of players have been granted waivers, with further relaxation of that rule on the way.

Transfers were already the next big thing. For teams such as the Gophers, it has become critical for turning around a program.

“It really has changed the recruiting landscape,” 247Sports.com recruiting director Evan Daniels said. “Coaches can wait until the offseason to snag a graduate transfer or get [an eligibility waiver] right away. And it changes the course of their season.”

I wonder if this plays into the decision of guys like Walton and Garcia. They might as well go somewhere else to start their careers because they know they have a get out of jail free card if it doesn't pan out. Or has this already been discussed and I missed it?

Pitino always plays the what if card. What if Eric Currey doesn't get hurt. What if Akeem Springs doesn't get hurt in the NCAA tournament. What if Amir Coffey stayed his senior year. What if Marcus Carr got a waiver to play right away. What if Gach and Robbins get a waiver. If everything worked out perfect for Pitino he would not be 48-82 in the big ten, but here we are. Agreed they could be a good team IF everything falls into place. Of course I could win the lottery too if the stars align.

You forgot a bunch and so I am...What if Reggie isn't embroiled in a controversy that allegedly happened two years earlier and is suspended because of it with a 13 and 1 record at the time?

What if there isn't MOA porn cell phone gate and it's suspensions and embarrassment?
What if dude doesn't torture a girl and end up in jail?
What if Matz and Jordan Murphy are not hurt in the NCAA tournament? What if Amir didn't get hurt? What if McBrayer's mom did not pass away in season? What if McBrayer isn't hurt all year?
What if Hollins ankle doesn't happen?
What if Nate Mason doesn't have permanent hip issues and can't play as he'd like because of it?
What if Rick Pitino was an anonymous mailman? (Richard may not have the job ha) But, holy moly the stress Rick has burdened on Richard is enormous over the past couple years....controverseries, whispers, accusations have not made life smooth for Richard. I'd be asking what if too?

And the what if about Amir leaving is more manageable if expected, but obviously all signals to Richard were that Coffey was returning, until blindsided by his departure. Schedule and roster all indicate it is/was the case.

I doubt this would be much of an issue, even if some kids logic did work that way (which I highly doubt). The only time it would come into play is if the kid was a coin flip on where to go, because if you were 51% Minnesota, why wouldn't you just pick Minnesota, anything else makes no sense.

Players do not think it but coaches who actually care about and are authentic in recruiting a player often catch them back as a transfer. Finishing second in recruiting can pay huge in recruiting not only on the return player but the family, friends, teammates, coaches. Relationships matter and if your authentic people remember you forever.
