Gophers sophomore forward Michael Hurt is going to Spain this summer to play on a traveling basketball team coached by Hall of Famer Larry Brown.

Brown, the only coach to win titles in the NBA and NCAA, was announced as the USA East Coast basketball coach on Monday. Brown last coached at Southern Methodist from 2012-16.

The 6-foot-7 Hurt was selected to the 12-member squad that will play in Madrid from Aug. 7-12 against teams from Senegal, Japan, Venezuela and Mexico. Training camp is scheduled for Aug. 5-6 at Columbia University in New York.

Hurt, a former Rochester John Marshall standout, averaged 5.8 minutes and played in 26 games as a freshman for the 24-10 Gophers last season.

Lycoming College coach Guy Rancourt founded the USA East Coast program in 2006. In the last decade Rancourt's teams have traveled to 12 countries and competed against 22 national teams. The program exposes college players to international competition and culture to prepare them for a potential career overseas after playing NCAA basketball.

If he can't improve under Larry Browns direction there's no hope for him - he should come back with a boatload of confidence.

Hurt will be one of 12 players, mostly from Power Five conferences, who will play for the East Coast Team against squads from Japan, Mexico, Senegal and Venezuela in Madrid, Spain. The American team will have games against those countries on August 8, 9, 10 and 11.

Should be a good experience for him. Going to be awfully difficult for Hurt to get meaningful minutes this season.

Finished 2-1 on trip - Hurt had 13 point Spain select and 6 against Venezuela - hopefully its a eye opener for him and a confidence builder.
 

What is this team? Seems like a random collection of players.
