per Joe:

Gophers coach Jerry Kill indicated Tuesday that the team is strongly considering a medical redshirt season for senior safety Damarius Travis, one of the team's top defensive playmakers.

Travis led the Gophers with 10 tackles in the season-opening loss to Texas Christian, but pulled a hamstring while trying to block a late punt.

Travis returned to practice this month and Kill had sounded hopeful about getting him back for last week's Nebraska game. It's unclear if Travis had a setback, but he wasn't able to play against the Cornhuskers. The Gophers have a bye this week before playing Michigan on Oct. 31.

Kill said a medical redshirt "may be a possibility" for Travis, a Pensacola, Fla., native, who ranked fifth on the team last season with 67 tackles.

"We'll know a little bit more here in the off week, kind of where he’s at," Kill added, noting that Travis has yet to use a redshirt year. "Where he’s at, and where we’re at in the season, that very well could happen."

Go Gophers!!

I would think he would eligible if he doesn't come back this year. It would be nice to add his veteran presence next year. A secondary of Myrick, James, Travis and Rogers would be solid. Plus the walk on safety from Blaine and the freshmen who have seen time this year. Add Ray Buford into the mix whose redshirting and the secondary doesn't seem as much of a weakness next year.

Hats off to coach Kill.

He played this just right--claiming to be optimistic about Travis returning only to be disappointed by a setback.

THAT'S how you get a medical red shirt, boys and girls. You have to create media evidence of an attempted comeback.

Obviously they want a medical redshirt here.

They have to be careful about what they say and what they do here.

I'd prefer for him to get healthy and help the defense finish off this year on a positive note. Between Rogers, Ayinde, Duke McGhee and the freshmen we should be okay for next year.

Wait - so Kill is calculating with what he says to the media and he may have different reasons for what he says than meets the eye? Wow, I read somewhere he just whines about everything and it brings his players down. Hmmmm.

Is Travis an NFL quality player? If so, why would he stay unless he wants to graduate and take a chance on increasing his NFL position next year.

Based on his physical ability and the trajactory he showed as last year went on, it looked like he would/could be, but I think that was assuming the trajectory continued into this year and he showed it on the field. Unfortunately he hasn't had the chance to do that.

I imagine his injury hasn't helped his draft stock.
