STrib: Lauer injury not serious, but depth on U offensive line remains a concern

Gophers left tackle Ben Lauer injured his right knee Sunday during the team’s third practice. Even though it wasn’t said to be serious, it exposed one of the team’s concerns.

Lauer is a 6-7, 317-pound junior who was named a freshman All-America two years ago, but injuries limited him to six starts last year. At right tackle, the Gophers have 6-9, 324-pound junior Jonah Pirsig, who has battled injuries through his college career, too.

The Gophers really hope those two stay healthy, so they can keep 6-5, 310-pound senior Josh Campion at right guard, instead of moving him back to tackle.

With Lauer icing his knee, the Gophers gave 6-6, 310-pound sophomore Alex Mayes and 6-6, 291-pound freshman Quinn Oseland reps at left tackle with the first-team offense Sunday.

“You get guys dinged up, you’re going to have to test your depth pretty quickly,” said Matt Limegrover, the team’s offensive coordinator and offensive line coach.

Depth a concern? Ha! Depth was a concern four years ago when an offensive lineman went down and Limegrover was looking at the cheerleading squad to see if any of them had muscular calves. Today we're phat with depth and next year will be where we need to be.

This is pretty concerning to me. Lauer and Pirsig staying healthy outside allows Campion to stay inside and stabilize the interior OL along with a healthy Christenson. Hopefully it's a minor injury and Lauer is back to 100% soon.

LT is the one position where we have very little depth. Had any other starting O-line had gotten injured, the headline probably would have been different. At LT, if Lauer goes down, Campion is really your only reliable option while at the 4 positions, you can get a backup guy to fit in without having to shift the starting guys around.

It appears that the GopherHole has caught avian flu again. It is also again the "chicken little" strain.

You can have depth while your backups aren't as good. You can have depth and still be concerned when starters get injured.
