per Joe:

After a slight delay, former Gophers football player Jeff Jones has completed his transfer to Iowa Western Community College.

Spring classes began at Iowa Western on Jan. 11. Jones was delayed in arriving but officially enrolled Monday and will be eligible for spring practice, Iowa Western coach Scott Strohmeier said via text message.

Jones fell behind academically last fall, spurring the transfer to Iowa Western, where he'll be eligible to play games this fall. He'll be eligible to transfer back to a Division-I program once he completes his two-year degree, so it's conceivable he could be right back with the Gophers at this time next year.

“He’s a great kid — a great kid,” Gophers coach Tracy Claeys said last month. “He’s more than welcome to come back [to the Gophers]. He just had a tough semester academically, and it really wasn’t until this semester.”

Go Gophers!!

Add this delay to the odd story of JJ. Hope to see him in M&G some day.

Well, at least this puts off the "what position will he play?" debate for at least one year (assuming Jones winds up back with the Gophers....)

But what position will he play at Iowa Western Community College?!

Go Gophers!!

Maresh, McDonald, Nelson and now Jones. We sure have sh*tty luck with highly rated local recruits. Hope Jeff breaks the string and we see him back here. Though the bigger hope is that he is able to take advantage of his opportunity no matter where it takes him.

The good news is he will have more time to work on his Heisman speech.

Nelson was not that highly-rated.

Unfortunately highly rated recruits from MN fail far more often than they exceed no matter where they go to school. Hopefully Coughlin changes that here.

Can add Gjere and Lamonte Edwards.

Context should be applied here. Maresh had a heart problem, McDonald a drug problem, Jones a school problem and Nelson wasn't all that highly rated. Maresh could have been great but nature got in the way . McDonald had a pretty crappy life and that resulted in his drug use, Jones like McDonald didn't have the greatest upbringing and he couldn't hack football and school at the same time. What about Rasheed Hageman? He was highly rated and he's in the NFL now. Jonah Pirsig is doing ok. The thing is Minnesota doesn't produce a lot of talent so when we have someone talented people fixate on him and tear the guy apart. Fairly or unfairly. You're right though. Some cloud hangs over the highly rated Minnesota kid. Outside of Larry Fitzgerald most have not lived up to expectations.

Yes Maresh had heart issues, but it was drinking that is the reason he didn't make it at the U - not "nature getting in the way". It was well known, he has admitted as much, and you are misremembering.

Speaking of Maresh - where the hell is he now? Did he end up going nowhere after Iowa Western?
I thought he still had some eligibility left?

Two starting wide receivers for Arizona Cardinals are MN boys

Don't forget about Hageman, developing into a decent NFL defensive lineman.
