STrib: Gophers QB Leidner feeling better, ready to run more

Well, it's a real thing. However, it certainly is no excuse to go on the 60 day DL and sent to Florida for rehab while we continue to pay him $23.5 million.

Oh yeah it is a thing. It's also just a great example of that perfect combo of perplexing situation, weird communication with fans, and all around frustrating situation for all.

The TCU game was the start of the the decline for the team as a whole. Lots of bang up players and has been down hill since then. I agree with Kill not wanting to play that type of team right off the bat.

Go Gophers

+1. It is also why Kill wanted UNC off the schedule - to avoid a physical game that had a higher likelihood to create injuries... not because he thought we would lose like so many on here incorrectly preach. Kill was right to get out of UNC. Teague was a tool for scheduling TCU in their place. Not because we went 0-2, but because the physical game in week 1 has had a very negative impact on the rest of our season thus far.

Yes and No

The greatest impact from the TCU game was losing it. We invested all winter, spring and summer to beating TCU and came up short. That to me is the negative impact. Would I have scheduled it? Not in football. Basketball, you need tough games sprinkled in to mentally prepare for the grind of 18 tough conference games...even then not the first game. Football? No, injuries are definitely more common versus higher competition...plus bowl eligibility etc.

But we did have the game scheduled and with it came positives: By practicing to prepare to defend TCU's no huddle we developed a no huddle offense we did not have before. The players also worked harder than any other summer preparing for the TCU challenge. We got more publicity and buildup for the season than any time in recent memory. This has us playing sold out games.
Had we beaten Troy in game one, in my opinion there is no way are playing to sold out crowds of Minnesota fans. The attention on Gopher football is at it's highest because of TCU getting people's attention.

Plesek, Duke, Campion, Lauer, Bjorklund, Jones, and others were all hurt before the TCU game. Didn't we only have one injury during the TCU game? Too lazy to look it up...disagreeing the game took a physical toll or that TCU is physical. They are fast. They are skilled and play at a higher level offensively than we do but I don't see them as physical. The toll was losing the game...we did not intend to lose the game.

I agree about not scheduling North Carolina. For the reason you stated for sure, but because losing a non conference game puts more pressure on becoming bowl eligible which in turn creates more injuries because just the feel is different...the pressure to win... Recruiting is going to suffer big time if a team is not bowl eligible. Just some thoughts...agree with your ideas mostly.

TCU lost more players in that game than the Gophers did. They are 6-0. Injuries are going to occur no matter who you play. The Gophers also had a number of injuries before the TCU game last year, after playing lowly Eastern Illinois and Middle Tennessee.

Of course you realize it is more who gets hurt than how many, right? Also, stating TCU lost players in that game only supports my statement. It was a tough physical game for both teams.

You mean a number of starters off of their already thin defense? The Gophers lost more players against CSU, Kent State, Ohio, and in practice than they did against TCU this year.

Rationalize it all you want, it was and is a silly and baseless comparison regardless of context.

No intention to get in a passing match, but I thought the Tebow comparison made perfect sense.

No matter how hard Tebow worked he was never going to make it in the NFL for an extended period time as an above-average starter.

And no matter how hard Leidner works he isn't going to be a great B1G quarterback for an entire season.

Both may show flashes here and there, or even for a few games, but in the end they each have similar shortcomings.

Cumulative. You continue to make my point. Thanks.

What point? The Gophers lost Travis during the TCU game, that's one starter. The odds of the Gophers losing one starter playing any other team is just as high.

Ace Rogers got hurt too in that game didn't he? Safety depth to huge beating that day

It made perfect sense. People were being stupid. It's like when people say this incoming freshman's style of play reminds me of this great NFL player and then someone flips out simply because you're technically comparing them in a way, but they ignore that you're simply talking about style, not actual talent level.

"IT" = the natural ability to pass a football referring to Tim Tebow trying and practicing his hardest to make it in the NFL but just couldn't. Thank you to all of the know-it-alls for informing me of Tim Tebow's collegiate accomplishments.

For the love of god, someone on here posted that they would rather have Leidner work on his completion percentage and I immediately thought of Tebow working tirelessly to improve upon his (YES, IN THE NFL, I REALIZE THAT) but to no avail. My goodness people give it a rest. I am not trying to compare Mitch Leidner's collegiate career to Tim Tebow's............I was simply referencing the fact that everyone wishes Mitch could pass better but some things ("it"=passing ability) are simply there or they are not.

I then spun it positively in saying that our team could use Mitch's above-average running ability but instead of keeping it positive everyone has to tear into me as if I had no idea what Tim Tebow did in college.

Classic dpo... getting into an argument because he doesn't understand something that makes perfect sense
