per Marcus:

The Gophers football team no longer stands on the field during the pregame national anthem, a practice that started after the game at Penn State on Oct. 1.

Then, as it is now, the debate about what role athletes play in voicing concern about social injustices was making its way coast to coast.

After San Francisco quarterback Colin Kaepernick began sitting and then kneeling during the anthem in August in protest of police violence, several college players around the country followed his lead, including some Nebraska Cornhuskers during the national anthem on Sept. 24.

The change in plans for Gophers football, however, is not about making a statement, coach Tracy Claeys said recently. The belief within the program had been it was a Big Ten rule for teams to be on the field for the anthem. Upon learning that was not the case, Claeys said he made the change because he wanted to improve the team’s pregame strategy.

“Prior to the [Penn State] game, they kept both teams in the locker room until right before kickoff,” Claeys said. “The game started almost immediately when we took the field. I liked that routine and liked having the team together as long as possible before the start of the game.”

Go Gophers!!

Claeys is smart. One step ahead of a potential distraction or divisive issue within the team and they have a better chance to stay focused on their task at hand.

Don't like it. If your team isn't ready to play 3 minutes doesn't mean anything.

I prefer the anthem be done before both teams enter the field. I like the entrance and then get the game going.

No reason for the team to be on the field for it or for it even to be played before games

Brilliant!

No reason for the team to be on the field for it or for it even to be played before games

No hope! Just a very sad comment... Personally, I'm proud to be a citizen of the USA. I'm proud of the people who fought for our freedom before me. And I'll continue to respect our flag and national anthem. If for a moment it conjures thought we are one country striving to be great together, I'd welcome that. If for a moment it reminds me to offer thanks to God for all the blessings we have, I'd like that. And if the participants recognize they are about to enter into a competitive contest to be fought hard striving for victory with sportsmanship a high priority...that would be nice too.

Obviously, the playing of our national anthem means none of those things or anything to you?

Agreed. If this is how it's going to be, maybe they should stop playing the national anthem.

Gee, ya think?

This isn't 1944 anymore, the boys have been home from the Western Front for quite some time now.

Playing the anthem before every sporting event is a pointless and outmoded exercise.

I love it. If it pisses of someone from the right then it makes my day. There is no reason to even play the anthem at games. The battle hymn of the republic is enough.

Go Gophers !!!!!!!!!!!

So the national anthem is outdated and a waste of time unlike all those other pregame activities including my favorite, the contrived ski-u-mah chant. Oh, and then there are the official reviews and TV timeouts that are so important to the game.

Ha I love it. Your comments offer proof you don't need critical thinking ability to like Adam Levine's music. Congrats on one nice choice!

I wonder what the families of the 5000 servicemen killed since 9/11 would feel about cutting the anthem out of pregame. I'm sure they'd be fine with it...

Maroon five could also mean the starting 5 for mens basketball but that probably went way over your head.

Ski-U-Mah !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ha Ha !! Butt hurt a little bit today ...

Fine by me and I'm somewhat patriotic. They don't play it before performances at the Guthrie.

So the Gophers are picking and choosing. Sounds like they are taking a knee in the locker room. Come on, really, Does the 3 minute anthem or whatever wear you out?

Look - I attend hundreds of HS sporting events a year, and when you hear the anthem that often, it loses some of its impact. At games, I routinely see HS-age kids and a lot of younger kids who don't pay attention, and are goofing around, texting, etc during the anthem.

I don't know why we couldn't try something different. Options - the Pledge of Allegiance, "God Bless America," "My Country Tis of thee," or maybe play one of the Armed Forces songs or a good John Phillip Sousa march. Save the anthem for major events - Super Bowl, World Series, NBA finals, etc.

Our National Anthem: If you play it, they will stand!

The great thing about our country is that we have the right to express our beliefs. The 5000 servicemen killed since 9/11 and all of those that came before them did just that. They paid a heavy price. If there are athletes that feel that they should express their beliefs by in essence showing disrespect for our flag, our anthem and what it all stands for, then I say good for them! They too need to be willing to pay the price. The price is that a professional athlete should not be allowed to participate in the game and a college player should lose their scholarship. These are fan-based jobs if you will. If the majority of the fans are in opposition of the stance taken by certain athletes, they need express it by not supporting the team ultimately thus forcing the hand of the professional team or institution.

Somehow I doubt that any of that will ever happen. That would take major guts, would it not, on the part of all parties concerned.

I would imagine that maroon five voted for Hillary.

I'm surprised this wasn't a topic of discussion the first time they did it.

Great attitude. Kaep and his minions have helped to torpedo NFL ratings. The vast majority of Americans find this form of protest disrespectful, which it is. They have the right to protest this way but many decide that between the lousy and misguided attitudes of some of the players, a watered down product, and overexposure they have better things to do.

James can't put his finger on it.

Based on the NFL's television ratings -- down by 19 percent for "Sunday Night Football," 24 percent for ESPN's Monday Night Football and 18 percent for Thursday night games through the first seven weeks of the season compared to 2015, according to the Washington Post -- the NFL could use more fans showing that same type of loyal viewership.

James, one of the NBA's most high-profile stars, said he isn't sure why fans are tuning the NFL out.

"I've heard some of the comments from some of the players, as far as the game, the fun part of it is kind of being taken away. And I know when I played football, I played it for that reason," James said after Cavs practice Monday. "For the competition, one, and for the fun of it ... I've seen a couple of the main guys talk about how the game is not as fun. It's all political, things of that nature, at this point. You definitely don't want to take the fun away from the game. That's why we all fell in love with sports in general is because you have fun with it at the beginning.

Yes, I worked on my glutes today. I added a little more weight and reps. It is the start of winter conditioning. Tomorrow is chest and back and Friday is biceps and triceps. With cardio in the early morning and another new business I am very busy. So yes my butt hurts but in a good way.

Ski-U-Mah !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Soccer Premier League ratings are also down with no explanation.

20 years ago my HS team was never on the field for the anthem. We always entered the field just before line-ups. Never heard any comments on it. Our opponents were always on the field.

I would think veterans would be more offended by those who take advantage of Veterans Day and Memorial Day holidays with no acknowledgement of why they get the day off.

Donald Trump could have taken a sh^t on the American Flag and the majority of white people would have still voted for him for President of the United States. He disrespected the hell out of our military and its soldiers when he ridiculed former POW John McCain, the family of a Gold Star soldier who died fighting for this country, and when he said he knows more about Isis than any of our military's generals. Talk about disrespecting the men who have fought for this country! And he's now the President of the United States! It's pretty damn convenient for a hell of a lot of people to express outrage over a black man choosing not to stand for the national anthem, yet have no problem voting for the aforementioned. I can't believe so many grown ass men get their panties in a bunch over these guys taking a knee for the national anthem. It's every damn bit their country as it is yours, and it's pretty damn convenient how people choose when and how to express their patriotism. Their are soldiers who have actually fought in war for this country who don't mind these guys doing what they are doing. The NFL losing ratings and fans over that, you think Kaepernick cares? The fans, owners, and executives would be way more upset if the NFL were to go away than the players who are doing this would be. Pretty damn convenient when Jim Harbaugh blasted Kaepernick and then when his own players protested the anthem did a complete 180. Funny how that works, power. So is Jim Harbaugh unpatriotic because he supports his players protesting the anthem? How about Mark Dantonio?
