STrib: Five keys to the Gophers' season

I see #1 & #3 being systemic. Saw too many drops & lack of separation, from our WR last year.

I think if #2 happens, #1 and #3 will automatically happen.

If 2 happens then 1, 3, and 5 should all happen! They have studs in the backfield if Jones is being used elsewhere. If they get holes they will be successful!

Interesting. It appears that people are suggesting that if #2 happens 1,3,5 should fall in place. And here I thought it was all on Leidner's shoulders.

I think Joe C nailed the top 5 in terms of topics, not necessarily the order. I'd probably swap the WR's to #1 and Leidner to #3 in order of importance.

I think #2 is the key. For four years now we've heard about our great recruiting on the O line. This year it's time for that recruiting to show up on the field. I don't doubt that it will!

You're going to get the usual suspects going again, Killjoy.

I do think Leidner's ability to take the next step will be the difference in another good season and potentially a great one. Unfortunately, I think we may really see this more and more as the season progresses, but not dramatically in game one.

Kill says we're more talented at receiver, and Limegrover says our OL is better and deeper and I believe them. I think we'll find over the course of the season that Cobb was really special, especially his ability to get something out of nothing and a little extra on every run. But if Mitch, the OL, and receivers are better, our offense will produce significantly more yards and points.

I think our pass rush is a wild card I don't have a real feel for. From all reports we're getting to our own QBs in practices and scrimmages, and if our OL is indeed better, that's a good sign.

All these things point to a really good team, and unless we have a slew of injuries and every bad break imaginable, this is going to be a fun season.

1, 2, and 3 are obviously related as a good quarterback, a good line, and good receivers can do a lot to make each other look good. Doesn't change the fact that we are going to need individual improvement at all three positions to take the next step. I think we get it. Receivers can't possibly be worse an the line should be deeper. As for Leidner, I'm not concerned about his ability to make some really good throws as we saw him do that last year. I think what our run heavy offense needs is for him to shore up his ability to consistently make the easy throws. If he can become automatic when he has an open receiver 8 yards or shorter, I think this team can do really well.

The improved D takes this team to the next level. Leidner improves. We are supposed to have one of the best OLs in the B1G. Our crop of young receivers is talented beyond any we have seen, maybe ever, but they have yet to perform on the field. Too many options there for several not to step up. All these areas take a step forward. Some will take a larger step than others. Some sooner than others.

I thought the key to the season was our long snapper?
