per Joe:

The Gophers football team continued to experiment with Chris Streveler at positions other than quarterback during Thursday night’s scrimmage, and coach Jerry Kill came away impressed.

“Somebody said he’s like a Tim Tebow-type guy,” Kill said. “He’s lining up at tight end, he’s lining up at H-back, he’s playing quarterback. I mean, he’s that smart. So that’s a real weapon for us.”

Streveler was the Gophers’ No. 2 quarterback behind Mitch Leidner last year and made one start, completing one of seven passes and rushing for 161 yards in a victory over San Jose State.

Asked if Streveler is still the No. 2 quarterback, Kill said: “We haven’t talked about it too much. We know what he can do at quarterback, and he came to me this summer and said he wants to play.

“And he’s just a great team player. He never complains. He goes, ‘Is there anything I can do to get on the field?’ And I said, ‘We’ll take a look at it.’ ”

Go Gophers!!

per Greder:

Kill told Streveler he would take a look at him playing somewhere else. He caught passes from Leidner over the summer. He has proven his versatility so far.

"He gives us a tremendous weapon in a lot of ways, and he showed that tonight," Kill said. "I've never had a player able to play that many positions and not have to teach him anything. He's that smart because when he played quarterback, he studied the whole thing."

There it is.

We know Streveler is an effective runner. We know he is extremely fast. We know Mitch is healthy. In addition to all other other "new offensive weapons" at WR, the addition of Streveler and JJ could really open up this O. Get them the ball, Mitch. (can't wait to see Nugget eating up Ds on the ground)

We will score points this year.

Well from what I've read Streveler has taken all, or most, of snaps with the 2nd team this fall. Of course we won't know if that has changed with practices being closed now, but I have to think he's still the backup in short-term situations. If Leidner goes down for a longer period we could see someone else.

100% agree with the bolded part. It is the latter portion of that statement that I think is reinforced with Kill's response. Also if ML7 goes down early I think we may see someone other than CS5. Let's hope we never have to find out.

Agreed. The intriguing part is if that someone else is Perra/Rhoda or Croft. I hope we don't have to find out.

I wonder, if they ever commit to him being other than QB full time, if running back is something they would look at. At 225 pounds he's plenty big, and he's more than fast enough. He punished people when running as a QB. At 6'2 he may be a little taller than a typical RB though...

The good thing is that he's only a RS soph. My guess is that next year Strevy isn't a QB anymore. It seems clear that Croft is in the process of passing him and when Poljan is added to the mix and if (IF) Perra stays (backup QBs tend to transfer a lot) then it frees them up to move Strevy full time.

For what it's worth Ryan Burns thinks he will be a TE by the TCU game.

I think he's not a QB right now. And if we do need him to sub in for a short period, it will be exclusive wildcat, so how much practice does he really need?

Agreed, which means they must have a true 2nd string guy in mind.

I am not sure exactly what your point is? The statement above seems to be saying that Kill is looking at/exploring options as how to use Streveler. He doesn't indicate that he has made any decision about him or if he has, he is not letting us know what it is.

Very Good. Everyone is welcome to interpret this however they want. I view it, along with how they are practicing him at these different places, along with how inside guys like Ryan Burns are predicting a position switch as a clear indication of where they are heading with CS5 and the #2 QB spot. You can view it differently. I'm sure you'll let us all know if you end up being right - no doubt about that.

It also is worth mentioning that there is absolutely ZERO chance that the coaches haven't really discussed the back up QB position much as Kill said. What Kill didn't say in his response is what is most telling, IMO.

I honestly didn't understand what your point was. That may be my fault not yours. I was just looking for clarification.

LOL - For a guy that accuses others of trying "to read Kill's mind" you seem to be walking on thin ice. It is not what you said, I agree with it. It is just a little hypocritical after you call out others for stating what they believe was Kill's intention. Anyway, like a discussion on a Leidner this needs to come to an end.

Interesting. He's a little small for TE, but I'm sure he wouldn't be lining up in a traditional TE role on the end of the offensive line.

Killjoy - Would you care to find one example of where I have gotten on others for "reading Kill's mind" or called someone out for such a thing. I disagree with folks on here all the time, maybe about interpretations of what a coach said, but could care less if someone tries to interpret what is said or printed. I get you have an issue with me - right back at you - but I'd really appreciate you stop making things up about me to prove some point.

As for this statement from Kill... He was asked point blank if CS5 was his backup and he flat out avoided the question and made some ridiculous claim that they haven't really discussed it. I interpret that one way and as I said above don't care if you interpret it differently (gasp). It also has nothing to do with ML7.

It's not possible to have too many 6'2", fast, smart and tough football players that understand the complete playbook. There's going to be a place for him to get a lot of playing time. Trust in Kill on this.

Streveler back to Leidner?

Is it possible we see Chris in a bit of the Jordan Lynch as a freshman at NIU role? When Harnish was still the QB, Lynch's athleticism got him on the field for a handful of plays each game, primarily runs, even though his passing was not very advanced at that point. Seemed to add an element to the offense, and kept some hits off Harnish (who actually was a decent runner himself, similar to Mitch) without being a QB platoon/controversy either. Basically I'm just noting this was a method Kill/Limegrover used the in the past in a comprable situation. Thoughts?

I'm in favor of anything that makes our offense look more like what Kill/Limey ran at NIU. The quick slants and WR/Bubble and RB screen passes would be my first choice, but I wouldn't be opposed to some wildcat with CS5 either.

Streveler will see some action this year. It is a long season before the B1G championship.

IMHO, the Gophers offense will continue to morph and will become very exciting to watch now with stability at QB and the talent infusions we have.

Brick-by-brick they will get better each year.

Can't imagine in two to three years what a Croft-Poljan QB tandem will be like with a beefy experienced OL and seasoned WRs/RBs.

I really like the thought of Streveler at the H-back spot, I think he could do some damage.

One more wrinkle for defenses to take into account. Leidner can block at 237-240 lbs. on trick plays.

Streveler has probably hit his ceiling at QB.

He's never going to be a legitimate Big Ten starter.

If Mitch goes down for any extended amount of time.....gulp.

It's not out of the question that Leidner could go down and his replacement keeps the job.

Stranger things have happened, truely!
