I figured you all would enjoy this:

Last week I was doing a wine tasting down in Montgomery, Alabama and was chatting with a customer. It came up that I am originally from Minnesota and am a huge Gopher football fan. He proceeded to tell me that he had family in Menomonie, WI and in 2013 he visited the area and attended a Gopher game @ TCF and a badger game in Madison. He had nothing but great things to say about our stadium, fans, coach and team trajectory. He then went on a 15 minute rant about how awful his experience was at Camp Randall. He couldn't quite remember the opponent, but he thinks the badgers were playing Northern Iowa (or something like that) and he happened to be wearing purple that day. He couldn't believe how rude the badger fans were - especially because he was with two young kids. It ended with him saying that, based on his experiences, he will forever be a Gopher fan when it comes to the Big Ten and will always despise the badgers. A lot of our hate can be irrational at times, but it's good to know it's not entirely in our heads!

Go Gophers!

Nope badgers lend a whole new meaning to the word boor as in boorish.

I attended the UNLV game in Mpls a couple of years ago in full UNLV gear. I had nothing but positive experiences with Gopher fans. My wife, an Oregon Duck fan, was amused in a good way as we left the stadium, early (the Gophers were way ahead and our 8 year old daughter was well past her bedtime). Seeing our UNLV shirts several people made friendly comments. One woman earnestly said, "thank you for visiting our state." My wife said to me, "these people are too nice." It made me proud to be a native Minnesotan. One the other hand, I don't care what team people are fans of, and I drink alcohol myself, but some drunks can be jerks.

Good stuff and is there any better hate than the irrational kind?!? ;-)

A lot of opposing fans have had nothing but bad things to say about the skunks. I was at the first B1G MN @ Neb football game when a Cornhusker fan asked me if all WI fans were jerks. He also said he was impressed with the MN fans. Nebraska is my favorite fan base.

Another great set of fans are those Horned Frogs. When TCU visits us to open the season I hope we treat their fans as well as they treated us before, during, and after the game. TCU fans were a classy bunch, spread the word to be nice to them and to stockpile our venom for the skunks and, of course, Who Hates Iowa?

completely agree with TCU fanbase. i moved to Austin for work roughly 2 years ago from Minneapolis and while i generally don't associate with anything Texas, i do find myself cheering for TCU as all of my interactions here in Austin with TCU fans have been nothing but positive and full of mutual respect. they're a classy, level-headed, knowledgeable group from all i've seen.

Fadgers can go buck themselves.

Wine tasting in Alabama?

HA!! That legitimately made me laugh, sir and it's sort of what I expected before living down here. But, there is a lot of money for a very select few in 'Bama which actually breeds a pretty sophisticated wine culture. Credit where credit is due, though - solid joke.

My favorite part of your post was how you didn't bother capitalizing the badgers. Well done!

The South in general has an old money class that's pretty sophisticated. Most of the sterotypes, are of rednecks and new money Bubbas, but they don't apply to the old money upper class.

Gee, thanks for clearing that up. Just making a joke and Homer seemed to enjoy it.

It might be a joke to you but out of 10 generations of my family nine lived in either VA or NC. The South is very class conscious and it's something hard for many Minnesotans to understand, just as Homer was surprised by 'wine tastings' there are many aspects of Southern society people are unaware of. It is also the reason I'm optimistic that, in the next few years, we'll get some highly rated recruits out of the South. Some black and poor white communities, just don't trust the SEC/ACC schools, to take care of the kids they recruit.

So what you're saying is that all southerners live on farms and prefer beer, pick-up trucks, and country music. O.K., I think I get it now, thanks.

Your an idiot! what I said is that the South is highly class stratified in ways that most Minnesotans don't understand. I also said previously that the divisions are not captured by the popular southern stereotypes.

If we are to have true hate for the skunks, we need to step it up quite a bit. I happened to come across a Marquette board recently and that was some serious venom aimed at Becky. It's like comparing a black widow bite and a mosquito bite.

Last year at Camp Randall fans were yelling at us about epilepsy...and not in any sort of joking manor whatsoever. Obviously labeling entire fan bases as ****heads isn't fair but the badgers certainly have a much higher percentage than most if not all.

I'm proud to say I've done that. But everyone knows in order to slap the sack you need to take the bag from the box.

It can't be too stratified when there are only two divisions, the SEC East and West.

This post re-confirms my dislike of the badgers, even more than Iowa.

No argument here. Haven't been to the Camp for several years. I would rather walk through a mine field in Iraq. My son and.son-in-law will be at this year's game. Both played football and are 6'4" and if there would be an issue with a drunken skunk. Said skunk may go home in a gurney.

Boom! (I like your stories.)
