Still No Statement from Ben Johnson

This thread baffles me! Who the hell cares what Ben Johnson chooses to do the rest of his life? He can sail off to a sun set far away if he so chooses he got payed to coach basketball which he did. I know it is a slow time for sports but please drop Ben Johnson talk.

I'm mostly checking this thread to see if there are any updates on Ben's career. I'm sure Ben feels slighted, so it's no surprise he hasn't said anything.

In his defense, he hasn't publicly bashed the program, his circumstances, or the lack of resources, nor has he made any other excuses.

I find it odd that there hasn't been a mention about mid-major coaching opportunities, assistant jobs in the Power 5, or just general updates about what he's been up to. Nada.

I'm low-key a little worried about the guy. Hope he's doing alright.

Based on your contributions to this board over the years, I think it's highly unlikely you do any of the aforementioned. I think it would be unwise for anybody to ever shake your hand.

Regardless, if it's not in Johnson's contract he's under no obligation to meet your emotional needs by making public comments about his tenure as the gophers' coach.

Yep and for the 1000th time, no one is arguing he is contractually obligated to do so. There are things in the world that you should or should not do despite contractual obligations - in fact - almost all of the things in life you should or should not do are not bound by contract.

I have no emotional attachment to CBJ. I wished him well and I wished he would have done the right thing. I don't have to be emotionally invested in something to realize what is the right thing to do.

Why would I be emotionally invested in his time as a coach? I was right from the first day. You tied yourself in knots to pretend he was a good hire and now you're twisting yourself into knots pretending to not understand that people should do some things in life without a contractual obligation.

Am I surprised the guy who was handed the best opportunity in his life without earning it doesn't do the right thing? Nope. Am I surprised that you're pretending to not understand?

This begs the philosophical question of: "What is the right thing?"

And: "Who gets to decide what the right thing is?"

From what I can tell I would guess Johnson had a much higher winning percentage as a head coach than you have had in the court room. Not a bad zinger.

While you have decided that Johnson wasn't "deserving" of the job and that his sixteen years as an assistant was meaningless experience, the folks who made the call determined otherwise. It was far from an unprecedented move. In the last twenty years, six power five coaches have been hired with no prior HC experience. In the NBA 17 coaches have been hired with no prior HC experience.
It didn't work out for Johnson. A lot of it was his fault, some of it wasn't.

I hope he never speaks about the job. Then you will continue to pickle in the brine of your unmet expectations.

He wasn't deserving of THIS job, but his assistant experience probably qualified him for A head coaching job somewhere. Just know that it was at a lesser school than Montana State or Northern Illinois who both said no thanks. Just because the U pulled the trigger, doesn't mean the shot was deserved. It's not just Bob who has said this, it's the general public who watched the failed experiment unfold with their own eyes. 85% of Gopher Hole called this immediately after he was announced. If he had truly "deserved" this job, he would have been a success, or at least not an abject failure. Ben doesn't need to say anything to acknowledge his time here, but his lack of gratitude and statement to the fans who did support him almost implies he knows he fleeced the U for around $8Million and is too ashamed to say anything.

You bring up my job a lot. It's weird. It clearly intimidates you. You're not smart enough to realize how dumb your joke is. Like, it's not funny and also highlights your stupidity.

Johnson wasn't deserving. He had an awful resume and he was turned down by mid-major jobs prior to being hired. You're still defending him which is why you pretended to act like the argument was about his contractual obligations. In this moment, your stupidity outshined your pettiness and you've shown your true colors. You're also bitter that it didn't work for Ben. It proved everyone with common sense correct and you looked silly. . . again.

I agree with your first sentence. A Big Ten head coaching position should not be an entry level job.

Unfortunately, your typically muddle-headed thinking took over in the rest of your post.

Really? Kevin Stallings had a .661 winning percentage in six years at Illinois State and a .601 winning percentage at Vanderbilt (not an easy place to win) in 17 years there. He followed up those jobs with a .361 winning percentage in two years at Pitt including a winless ACC conference record in his final season. Todd Lickliter had a .681 winning percentage at Butler where he was a two-time conference coach of the year and a NABC national coach of the year in his final season there. He followed that up by completely flopping in three years at Iowa.

There are no guarantees in coaching.

How did he "fleece" the university? He was a failure, not a con man. They knew who they were hiring and assumed the risk.
