Still need to Prove It

After week 8, The Athletic has the Gophs ranked at 62. Way, way behind PSU and Illinois. Well behind WI. And meaningfully behind MD and Butgers. I don’t think the Gophers finish the season with an 0-5 steak. But there are no easy games. The struggle is real. 😡

Ranked 47 on this one.

Massey has the Gophs at #36, up from 40 last week. Sagarin has them at #45, down from #35 last week. That range seems about right until they pull off a few more wins. Gophs probably need to win up to and including PSU to hit the top 25.

They might be in the edge of being ranked right now if not for a couple wide rights in week 1.

Well if The Athletic says it...

(The Athletic sucks and not because of their Gopher Opinions)

They have them as the 4th worst Big Ten team.
These numbers are depressing, but if you don't like it, don't lose to North Carolina. We have a chance the next two games to prove that we're not among the worst in the Big Ten -- but we can also show that we are by losing.

Two must-win games, and if we want people to think we're good and not just not-in-the-worst-group, beat Illinois, too.

Can't help but daydream where things would be today if the entire season played out the same EXCEPT, one of two wide rights in game #1 went through the uprights instead, and the refs hadn't called offsides on the onside kick vs Meatchicken.

Its the same team, but that is the difference between #20 and #60.

Tend to agree. But if we are a #20 level team but for a missed field goal and (for me) and unfortunate blocked punt at Michigan, then we actually should beat Maryland, Rutgers and Wisconsin, and should be in a toss-up game against Illinois. I like that version better.

Not much separates 30-75
I would say anywhere between 30-75 is about right
Yep, same principal as the conference power rankings. Getting overly hung up on the particular rank is foolish because the margin between most of these teams is razor thin and you could pretty freely move teams up or down without much argument. There are the top teams and then there is a massive jumble of teams in the next tier.
