Gophers Selected as Number-One Seed in 2014 NIT; Face High Point Tuesday

The University of Minnesota men’s basketball team will continue its season in the 2014 National Invitational Tournament, as the Golden Gophers earned a number-one seed. Minnesota will open play in the 32-team tournament on Tuesday night at home against High Point University.

Game time is set for 7:15 p.m. CT at Williams Arena, and the game will be broadcast on ESPN3.

“While we are obviously disappointed that we were not selected for the NCAA Tournament field, we are extremely excited about the opportunity to continue our season in the NIT,” said head coach Richard Pitino. “There is nothing better than the opportunity to play for a championship, and our players and staff are looking forward to the challenge, beginning Tuesday night against High Point.”

Minnesota (20-13) is back in the NIT after making it to the championship game in 2012, falling to Stanford at Madison Square Garden. In total, this is the 13th appearance in program history at the NIT, not including 1996 and 1998 appearances that were later vacated. The Gophers have amassed a 22-12 record (.621) in NIT games, excluding vacated seasons.

High Point won the Big South Conference regular season championship and fell to Winthrop in the Big South Tournament quarterfinals. The Panthers are 16-14 overall on the season, including a 12-4 mark in conference play.

Tickets are $20 per ticket. All season ticket holders will have until 5 p.m. on Monday to purchase their season ticket locations for all games hosted at Williams Arena. Any season ticket locations not purchased will be released to the general public at 5 p.m. Monday.

The first 500 Minnesota students will receive a free ticket to Tuesday’s game. Student tickets can be picked up starting Monday at the athletic ticket office at Mariucci Arena.

The first round of the 2014 NIT will be contested on March 18 and 19. Winners will advance to the second round (March 20-24) and quarterfinals (March 25-26), with all games played at higher seed’s campus site. The final four teams will advance to New York and play the semifinals (April 1) and championship (April 3) at Madison Square Garden.

If I plan on going to this game I would be foolish to buy my ticket at the box office right? I'm guessing I could get in for 5 bucks on the street.

Pardon me if I'm missing something, but why would anyone buy a ticket for $20 and then turn around and sell it on the street for $5? Unless you're thinking students will grab a free ticket and sell it for beer money.

$5 ain't much beer money, unless you drink Leinerhaugenschnauser Swill.

Free tickets for students...nice. See ya there.

$4 would also get you a Long Island Tea at DB Searles. Two of those is more than enough.

MC's probably has the most alcoholic beverage with their "Hairy Buffalo". Definitely put a cap on at two. Or three ;)

No, because every ticket sold will have been originally purchased within 48 hours of game time, from the box office. So there's not going to be a flux of tickets on the secondary market.

MC's was the bar I was referring to. Not DB's. I got them mixed up. It's been too long.

Looks like there's a winter storm coming.
