Star Tribune's Rayno adds her own story to Teague scandal

After this latest report from Amelia I now expect this story to continue to evolve in two ways:

1) How many other women were harassed by Teague, and will anyone else come forward? Not fair to speculate, but I'm guessing it's not zero.

and

2) Was anyone within the athletic department, the university as a whole, or the extended U of M community aware of Teague's actions? Like Rayno, people may have been aware of Teague's transgressions and been hesitant to come forward due to fear of the effects on their day-to-day lives.

And I am reasonably confident that the U will do the right thing and follow up with integrity. Which will not include criticizing credible complainants for not coming forward earlier.

How regrettable that this man fooled so many of us into thinking he was a good guy, when in private he was a conniving predator. I wish he was the only one.

"The heart of man is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked; who can understand it?" Jeremiah 17:9

Gross. I have to believe there are a handful of other stories like this. Hard to believe this is all surfacing now. I really hope the U didn't plug their ears to any of it because if they did it's gonna come out.

This is going to get really ugly. Kill may get to pick the next President and AD if people knew of other incidents.

I think President Kaler better review the university policy on harassment, sexual or otherwise.

It should be strengthen if needed, and be re-emphasize and applied to the whole university.

let's talk about these two women. 1. amelia rayno, a female sports journalist at one of the top newspapers in the nation. 2. a nameless employee of the university.

amelia could have written the pulitzer prize winning expose on the athletic director who liked to harass female sports journalist and nameless and faceless university employees. instead she decided to preserve her job and say absolutely nothing.

nameless employee 2 has no job security and no national outlet to which others would flock to back her up. she still chose to out this sexual predator at the risk of her job and livelihood.

turns out, nameless employee comes out to bring this sexual predator down and before the ink is dry on the story amelia remembers that this happened to her.

i don't care if people try to make me into the monster, if amelia had written this story in 2014, a lot of damage could have been prevented.

Dude, my 20/20? All I'm doing is responding to a story about a person remembering a crime that happened over a year ago and only revealed those crimes when someone else first brought the bastard down.

One of the women was sufficently senior, to be seated next to Teague at an University event, if you know anything about these things they are seated by realative power. A fairly senior University official, with knowlege of the inner workings of the U, is vastly more powerful than a junior reporter yet to establish herself. Amelia Rayno might not of known how to make the system work but you can be assured a senior academic/administrator does.

Tough story, I can't imagine the fear she experienced. Good for Amelia in sharing your story, it took courage. We aren't considered about win. place. show when it come to exposing a SH.

Pretty awful what has happened to these women.

Once the Strib is made aware of this shouldn't they have done something to make sure NT was fired?!

I guess if I knew one of my employees was being sexually harassed I'm taking action

I think one of the points of Raymo's article is that she went to higher-ups at the Strib and discussed the incident with them, and based on those discussions, decided not to "out" Teague at that time.

Being a whistle-blower is not easy. I can understand how a young reporter would be reluctant to take on a powerful U of M official, who could make it more difficult for her to do her job. For a reporter, it's all about access. And, like it or not, women making allegations have to consider that it becomes a "he said, she said" situation. If she made allegations, and was not believed, she could be putting her career and reputation in jeopardy.

Yeah I would actually be surprised to hear about more stories for this very reason. I am sure they've done some digging.

Usually would agree, but they had a smoking gun in text messages. I'm in no way blaming Raymo, she IS the victim here. I just think when you have hard evidence of SH it is the employers responsibility to take action.

God forbid something much worse had happened after the fact, wouldn't the Strib be at some fault for not saying something?

Although if she had texts which the strib says they do, she likely would have been believed. We are talking about 3 years ago...not the 1950s here.

By all means, this 20-something entry level beat reporter should have torpedoed her own career and possibly destroyed her personal reputation by accusing a rich and influential man of sexual harassment. It would have ruined her professionally, but at least she could feel noble while writing ad copy for JC Penneys for the next 30 years.

Makes you wonder if something like this might come out from his time at VCU as well, or if it started here.

I'm really curious if Kaler really knew nothing of Teague's behavior until a few days ago. If it surfaces that Kaler knew about this stuff and didn't fire Teague, he might be gone.

I completely understand her actions. I don't fault her at all.

But the longer 20-somethings have that attitude you just described the longer the current culture will persist.

True. But you would have to have pretty hard evidence that he knew.

Wait. What? I need a serious explanation here. This sounds like you are blaming a terrified victim. She took the proper steps and spoke with the Human Resources department. I'm just confused why you are doing this. I'm not going to blame this on the fact that you don't understand because you're (probably) a male, but hell, I'm a guy and can see where Ms. Rayno is coming from. Please try again, because everything you have typed makes you sound extremely insensitive and I'd hope that's not your intention...

I second that...

He's gone and that noone can not think that isn't a good thing. What he did at this point considering what he lost is karma. The rest is all 20/20 hindsite be it regarding the U , the Tribune or the people harassed. As far as the victim thing, yes to a point but no crime occurred and it is an ugly reality of life. And not just for one gender either happens everyday probably just the human condition. Not defending the jerk but we all know these type of people and weeding them out isn't always that easy.

With Ms. Rayon coming forward, it is now clear that Teague's harassment of two university employees were not "isolated" events. These reported and most unfortunate situations are probably just the tip of the iceberg. Teague's actions were all about power and control and he was in a powerful position to control his victims more so than most predators of this nature. He knew how to manipulate his victims and he most likely did this to others over a long period of time. Hopefully, the victims will find some solace knowing that this sick individual has been revealed and removed from his position.

Brave yes, but she would have come out when it happened, when it could've made a difference, instead of after he was no longer sparty of us. (Yes I know for future reference, but he's already known as a scumbag). She didn't work for the U, Teague wasn't her boss. She should've come forward then, it could've saved the other two victims from what they endured..

Seems more like it was about MR Teague being horny and drunk. Also seems like he struck out and was not able to control his victims.

All in all, incredibly bad behavior.

Let's let this play out before speculation gets out of hand.

BigTenChamp is way off base on this.

As many, many other people in this thread have stated, it seems as though Rayno went to the appropriate people at the Strib, and worked together with them to determine the best course of action.

It is incredibly easy to sit behind a computer screen and say "she should have done this & that". But it accomplishes absolutely nothing (except to make the poster look a bit like a tool).

I sort of cringe when the women are painted as defenseless little flowers that need to be rescued and prayed for...

They seem to be strong, intelligent women that have their collective acts together. They didn't put up with Teague's BS and called him on it. Kudos to them.
