Staples: All Fleck needs to do is win between 7=9 games most years and beat Wisconsin once every 3-4 years and he’s set for life.

Don't disagree with you Murray ... but I am pessimistic about any team that right now is not in that elite tier, ever being able to step up into that elite tier consistently.

It's a chicken/egg conundrum, driven by extremely limited supply. There are precious few of those elite, bona fide 5* recruits each year, that a school needs in order to actually compete for a national championship. And those recruits are very unlikely to risk their futures (NFL) on going to a non-elite school.

So how can you break that impossible barrier to entry??

Dabo at Clemson seems to be the only one. And I frankly would not be surprised if they had a network of boosters who paid the crap out of players to get them there, to start it out. Now, of course, they probably don't need to do that, since they're one of the best in the nation.
It’s all about the coach and luck.

Auburn won a national title by having a very good team and then adding Cam Newton to the equation.
Wisconsin was a couple of plays away from playing for a national championship when they added Russell Wilson through luck.

To make the jump from very good to winning a title is possible. But you have to have a coach that makes you very good and then you have to take advantage when given the chance.

Wisconsin blew it with Russel Wilson.
Gene Chizik took advantage of Cam Newton.
Oregon lost on a freak play where the running back tumbled over a guy and his knee never hit the ground.

it’s possible but very unlikely. Have to take advantage when the opportunity is there.
the gophers were in my opinion one catch away (against Iowa) from playing a play in game against Ohio state in the playoff even with the loss to Wisconsin. Have to take advantage of those chances to make the jump. There may never be a chance like that again.

So if over the next 4 years PJ averages 9 wins, and only beats Wisconsin once and has no division championships, you'd call for his firing?

For sure would not be asking for his firing. Would be disappointed if we only beat UW once and do not even win the division once.

12Ws - UW win
7Ws - UW loss
8Ws - UW loss
9Ws - UW loss

This matches the criteria offered for average wins (of 9 over the next 4 seasons) and victories over Becky in the example.

No way that I think this is the future, but I'd submit the seat might be warm under such a scenario.

Yes that's correct, and just fine.

Mind you in my post I was talking about consistently being in the equation for the national title. Certainly Oregon and Wisconsin were not/are not. Auburn maybe closer, but not really there, probably replaced now by Georgia. Probably can also argue LSU hasn't been either since Saban left, but now I think they will be with Orgeron.
