Aside from the two St. Thomas threads dedicated to whether or not we should have St. Thomas threads, there is one St. Thomas thread in the first six pages of this forum.

This is what I don’t get, where are all the Tommies and their posts that are polluting GopherHole? I just don’t see them. This whole debate seems to be a lot to do about nothing. It’s our Seinfeld crisis.

I think "hatred" is a poor choice of words. It's more like a deep-seeded territorialism being displayed by loyal Gopher fans over a lost puppy out in the cold looking for a warm place to poop.

Anyone on either side of the debate complaining about a dedicated UST thread on the OTB is being irrational and uncompromising IMO. Maybe charge GH users $10.00 per year if they want access to the thread and send that $30.00 to Dinkytown Athletes?

Now if we really want to have some fun with it, put the new thread on the Politics Board and let 'er rip.

Again, at this point, it is not a rivalry so it should be fine. If it becomes one, then it should go elsewhere. I don't think we want an "all things Wisconsin Badgers thread here" just for example. It's just an invitation for trolling.

Coming from a Gopher fan who uses Roland Brooks as his username.. went to Mychal Thompson basketball camp- still have the picture taken at Macalester with Bells.. Went to Jim Dutcher camp where as a real youngin remember smelling weed for the first time.. I can’t remember if it was John Wiley or Zeb coming from the parking lot.. it was not cologne I smelled.. .. still go 5+ plus games minus the last two could not handle watch The Gophers offense..

This whole thing cracks me up actually…

Roland Brooks still has one of my favorite dunks of all time- on a missed shot he came from the baseline and I swear he caught the ball with one hand two feet above the rim and threw it down for a put back jam.

So, is a post comparing the kenpom or Torvik ranking of Minnesota and UST now out of bounds? My own personal opinion is that it's relevant to this board if the local P5 team is ranked anywhere in the vicinity of the local Summit League team. Would it be ok to point out that SoDakSt was ranked in the vicinity of MN? If so, why not UST? Or is anything with "UST" in the text of a post now supposed to go to the OT board.

Is mentioning that the former Miami and then Iowa guy who’s from MN ended up there in bounds? Some (e.g. whipping boy and the insecure-about-a-Summit-League-team crowd) may get their panties in a bunch that it’s UST fan talk and shouldn’t be discussed here.

Can you define the line?

You are the one who's a knotted up. My frustration was with a thread that wanted to discuss the Tommies incoming NIL players, just because the person is a Tommies fan. If you wish to talk about a kid from Park Center who chose a Summit League school like St Thomas that's fine. The kids a Minnesota native who wasn't good enough to play in the B1G out of high school and chose a less competitive conference to play in. That's fine. It's when the main objective of the post is to promote St Thomas that I will object. Can you grasp the nuance or are you a strict abide by the law and look for loopholes kind of guy?

I agree that not everyone gives a crap about other schools in the area. Not everyone gives a crap about MN HS hoops or tournaments that the Gophers aren't in. Heck, *I* don't give much of a crap about UST. Just don't read those threads if you don't give a crap.

So if it's that easy to avoid, why single out UST threads (which are pretty rare) for banishment to OT? I am concluding that people are worried they'll become a rival and compete for recruits, etc. Certainly the previous coach thought that.

If the UST talk is as insignificant as the Tommie fans are suggesting, why are people acting like someone killed their dog? The fact that people are so angry about this just makes it more evident that the UST talk was not going to be a minor thing going forward. The passion being displayed for absolutely having to be able to talk UST in the main forum and not on an OTB proves the point. Some people are showing more passion for wanting to talk Tommies than anything Gopher related.
Heck its looking like the Tommies are going to be the biggest topic on GH for the spring at this point.

Why not go to the Badger board and just start the Tommie threads there, surely they won't be as big of Neanderthals as the OTBer advocates are here.

Same with me. But this isn't about UST or the Gophers.

This is clearly about discarding and removing any and all discussion from the main GH site that includes UST due to the whims and demands of certain posters who choose to read the posts rather than choosing to ignore them. Discussion which is fully acceptable under the current umbrella of Gopher Hole policy. Yet discussion involving fans from other teams or other basketball related topics are allowed.

Whenever there is an off topic site about UST I likely won't go there. I could basically care less. What I care about is the process and decision that the ownership GH has exercised under their rights as owners of the site. Either stand behind and allow "college basketball" discussion for all or remove it from their policy statement.

Fine. I’ll say it. I went to St. John’s and I’m sick of hearing about St. Thomas. Eff ‘em!

For real though, I did go to St. John’s, but I think St. Thomas going D1 is a cool story as I’ve always loved the type of Big East style program they seem to model. I’ll follow their sports progress with interest, especially basketball.

That said, as a lifelong Gopher fan (by way of alumni parents and by nature of paying taxes into the great state of Minnesota) I come to the Hole for the inside scoop on Gopher sports, not Tommie sports. Sure, it’s easy enough to ignore threads, but it does get annoying when well-meaning Gopher threads get sidetracked.

This isn’t an issue on the football forum because Tommie football kinda sucks. It’s a thing here on the hoops forum because Gopher hoops kinda sucks and I’m sure many of us are bored and looking for something to consume.

I voted “yes” to the poll. I don’t believe it’s censorship, I’d just like to not see whole threads about St. Thomas on the “Gopher Basketball Forum”. Add your comments and comparisons, but let’s let the primary focus be on Gopher hoops, no matter how much it kinda sucks.
