Post-Dispatch report at 11:38 a.m. EDT via Miklasz:

Painter expected to accept Mizzou offer today

BY BERNIE MIKLASZ STLtoday.com | Posted: Wednesday, March 30, 2011 10:38 am | 1 Comment

It looks like this will be a happy day for Mizzou fans.

Nothing is official yet and there haven't been any announcements, but a source tells the Post-Dispatch that Purdue coach Matt Painter just called Mizzou AD Mike Alden to say he's in as the school's next basketball coach.

Painter has been the school's primary target in the last week since Mike Anderson left to take over the Arkansas program.

A press conference could come as early as this afternoon in Columbia. Painter was believed to be flying from Orlando where he was vacationing to West Lafayette, Indiana, to meet with his players and then Columbia.

If this comes to fruition, I wonder if Cuonzo Martin would have been interested had he not accepted the Tennessee job?

The Big Ten apparently is losing a quality coach & guy. Even so, I'm sure there will be plenty of quality coaches waiting in the wings willing to take on a job with the winning tradition that Purdue has. Not 100% sure, but I think Purdue has more Big Ten basketball championships than any other school.

This is an inexcusable loss for Purdue. I can't believe they let Painter get away to a school that is a lateral move at best, let alone for a HC that went to Purdue.

I feel bad for Boilermaker fans...your AD let you down.

Go Gophers!!

If I were Purdue's AD I'd be on the phone with Brad Stevens' agent today offering to make him a rich man.

At minimum, I'm guessing the Associate AD responsible for the letter to the booster club will not survive this. Nothing like telling your biggest boosters that they're not doing enough to help the program.

If they wouldn't make Painter a rich man, I doubt they'd make Stevens one.

My guess is the most Purdue will pay is a million a year ... they definitley won't be making a "Tubby Smith - Like" hire.

And if I were Stevens, I'd hang up the phone immediately, laughing hysterically.

There's nothing quite like letting your young, successful, in-demand, alumnus head coach leave for a lateral move (at best) to poison the well for future candidates.

This is stunning. I can't believe it came to this. I thought this was all a move to make Purdue come to thier senses and we'd see a headline about Painter's new ~8 year $16 million dollar contract today. I guess it does get worse then Joel Maturi in the B1G. Huge fail by the Purdue AD.

I was going to post a similiar thought. If they're not going to pay a "Purdue Man" for what he's done at the school, restoring it to the national spotlight, why would they pay Brad Stevens? His two Final Fours aside it's still a risk/reward type thing and there's no certainty he could duplicate what he's done at Butler at Purdue. The amount of pressure to do that could eat him alive for all any of us know.

Besides I think Stevens will hold out until the Crean Experiment is finally called off at IU as a dismal failure. Rumours are that would be the only job he'd consider leaving for (but money does talk) and I doubt he'd leave for Purdue even if they opened the wallet-which they won't.

I'm still waiting to see if it really happens. Can't get confirmation that this is a done deal.

I heard this also had to do with the support the administration gave the program at Purdue. One thing Big Ten schools don't seem to get is that top sports are boss everywhere else. We can keep that out of the Big Ten, but then we won't be competing for the same players, coaches or championships. This was not simply about Painter's compensation.

I guess that Walmart money can even overcome alumni pride.

As Lee Corso would say.....Not so fast my friends.

Just got a text. Painter is staying and is holding a team meeting as we speak.

Purdue will spend 35 million on education not basketball.

Go Gophers

Glad to hear it. I like it when quality coaches decide to remain in the Big Ten, i.e. Painter, Izzo, etc.

Painter sniffs around Missouri gets new deal in days. Buzz Williams gets sniffed around by Oklahoma, gets a new deal in days.

Tubby gets promised a contract extension in April 2010. One year later, squat. Great job, Joel. At least the Purdue AD just allowed you to keep your 'Most incompetent AD in Big 10' title.

Joel is ridiculous, it takes him 5 weeks to do what others get done in 3 days...he loves loose ends.

Textbook example of a coach using an offer to get what he wants from his current employer

Joel taking 5 weeks to do what others do in 3 days would be an improvement. So far it's 365 days and counting.

You are not being fair to Joel. He can't sign Tubby to an extenssion yet nor can he possibly get the new basketball practice facility on track before he gets that baseball stadium deal done can he?

Joel does one thing at a time and he won't go on to the next thing until he is done. The baseball stadium is not done so Tubby will just have to wait. :banghead:

Great news that Painter is staying. The Big Ten needs to keep the good coaches it has.

Greed rears it's ugly head again. I know it's the times, but I'm so sick of these tactics pitting one school against another. And your Alma Mater at that. I guess living on a million or two a year is tough these days. I guess his ego demanded more.

I believe compensation for assistants was a factor as well and I am not going to judge Painter based on my limited knowledge of the situation.
