Sid and Dave had coach Kill on the Sports Huddle for the first half-hour segment. Dave referenced GopherHole and said he had about a dozen questions that were raised this past week and that he would try to ask as many of them that he could during the segment. First, however, Sid asked a few questions and then Dave asked the GopherHole queries; Sid asked a couple of the submittals, too. Thanks to those that raised the queries. And a big thank you to Dave Mona!

1) Sonny Lubick visited this past week and Sid asked Kill about his visit: "We're going to work hard to get better (acknowledging the need for defense improvement) . . . Sonny was one of the originators of the 4-3 defense (sang his praises about his stints at Miami and as head coach at Colorado State) . . . always known for the defensive side of the ball . . . we had (provided) various amount of questions before he arrived." He went onto say they talked about defense but also fund raising and ways to teach and practice. Sonny reinforced much of what the coach Kill and his staff are doing at Minnesota.

2) Tony Levine and Houston Cougars: Kill is sending a few of the offensive coaches to meet with coach Levine and his staff this week. They'll also meet with coaches of other teams that will be visiting Levine at the same time. The following week, Minnesota's defensive coaches will be visiting Mississippi State University. Kill, again, stressed the need to keep learning and improving and being open to what's going on in the game of college football. Always learning.

3) This past week, coach Kill visited with the team's coordinators (offense, defense, special teams, etc.) to ascertain what went well and what didn't go well, "Trying to fix what we're doing."

Questions from GopherHole:

4) Gary Patterson and the TCU situation: Coach Kill said he waited a couple days before calling coach Patterson, "Reaching out to a friend." Coach Kill and staff met with team and discussed the TCU situation, which they do whenever negative news or situation occurs in college football. You have to deal with the problems when they occur and discuss potential problems - teaching lessons and reminders to players about the negative influences out in society.

5) Junior Days: Meet and greet sessions through the winter months and through spring ball. Visits occur on weekends and some during the week. They visit with players and parents and show facilities.

6) TCF Bank Stadium and Vikings: Coach Kill said he's been focused on Gopher football; however, he went onto say there's always things to make progress with, "I have a lot of ideas we can do (to improve the facility)." Earlier in the discussion, heating coils for the field was mentioned, but coach Kill did say that wasn't an issue (frozen field) for the Gophers this past season. (Brief reference was alluded to when the Vikings played the Bears at TCF Bank in 2010.)

7) Narrow sets in the offensive line last year: They narrowed the sets to give the kids more of a chance because of physical limitations. They plan to do more things this spring because of the players improvements in strength and conditioning, "Blossomed physically, they've gotten stronger . . . we were very young last year . . . there's more competition this year and getting better on both sides of the ball."
Sid asked about the center position, and coach Kill mentioned favorably the competion of Zach Mottia, Jon Christenson (came in as a walkon at about 265 and is now 295 pounds and is "pushing people and is athletic") and Isacc Hayes. You could tell Kill is looking forward to having and coaching Hayes.

8) UNLV game being moved to Thursday night: One of the positives is getting to start fall practice earlier. Another positive is getting back about 5 a.m. on Friday, a day to rest up and extra preparation for the next game.

9) Josh Campion and Jimmy Gjere: Both will participate in spring drills. "Always concerned about concussions." Gjere is now about 325-330 pounds. They're looking forward to seeing what they do in spring drills. Wants them to use their hands more and not put their heads in harms way. Kill said they need Campion and Gjere and they'll be contributors.

10) Sid asked if there are 2 or 3 players that stand out in winter conditioning drills: Kill's response, "Everyone has improved." He said he hates to name players for fear he'll omit some. That said, he did mention Philip Nelson and Mitch Leidner. Mitch has gained weight and is upto 245 pounds. Scott Epke came in at 255 and now is at 270 pounds. He also mentioned Isaac Fruechte and said the secondary is doing well. He closed the question by stating that of the 10 fastest players on the team, six are new recruits on campus for winter classes and spring drills. The team has shown increased speed and athleticism.

11) This year's squad in comparison to last year's team at this time: Last year's team didn't know what to expect and had been without coaches a for a period time. (Didn't want to sound too critical.) This year's team has a different attitude and mindset, they know what to do, and there's great competition and teamwork. (They have 8 teams - 4 from the Legends Division and 4 from the Leaders Division.) He credited the strength and conditiong coaches with the improvement. He said the word "competition" several times, and that it took a good solid year to figure out what's going on and what's expected.

I want to thank Bob_Loblaw, Halsey Hall, Triple D, Parski1, Killjoy, nc2mn, Gophersiniowa, and curseislifted33 for taking the thread seriously and asking bona fide questions!

Go Gophers!!

7) I thought Mona/Kill were referring to "narrowing the offensive sets" later in the season (i.e. play calls) for the entire offense. Kill wants to "be more normal" in implementing the offense this season. He then segued into the conditioning statements.

8) Kill feels bad for some fans, but the players are excited about it.

10) Kill said Fruechte is as "athletically gifted as we thought".

Also GopherHolers, Mona gave a shout out to DL (though he didn't name him) for the great work he does transcribing the broadcast!!! Congrats, dude.

Thanks, Highwayman! And thank you for the additions. I try to get as much down as possible while listening to the questions and comments, but I don't always succeed in getting all of the comments/quotes down on paper!

Go Gophers!!

DL65 - Thanks for all your effort to make things better here. Not only do you post terrific notes but now you also coordinate the questions between the GopherHole and the Sports Huddle. Then in your spare time you do the annual survey for the GopherHole. You certainly deserve a round of applause from all of us for a job well done. I hereby nominate you to receive the most valuable player trophy at this year’s GopherHole banquet! In addition you should also receive the Mr. Congeniality award. I am not going to nominate you for best looking though. I do have standards. Thanks again.

Very nice summary!

I'm glad to hear Kill say good things about Fruechte. From what I've heard/read about him, I think he could end up being a stud receiver for us.

Thank you, Killjoy. I assume the GopherHole banquet will be at Murray's.

Oh yes, it's good to have standards!! And you're correct.

Go Gophers!!

I guess I will win the best looking award by default. :) (I am better looking than Robert DuVall.) That ought to turn Moonlight, GL, and a few other female posters on here.

Awesome report, DL65. I too caught Dave Mona's reference to GopherHole, and let that be a lesson to the upstarts and old farts that constantly get into the pissing contests and childish name calling here. People outside of the GH community do read this site, and I am sure they shake their heads in consternation wondering why the penny ante $hit. Let's all grow up and talk decently with respect and admiration for each other.

Great Idea! We can use those certificates from Murray's that you forgot to send me.

The best part about these summaries is that I don't have to listen to Sid! Thanks DL65

The best part about these summaries is that I don't have to listen to Sid! Thanks DL65

I think Sid is a heck of a nice man based on a few interactions but he has become horribly painful to listen to.

Thanks DL65

As far as Sid I still read his Sunday column. Grandpa sports is a MN icon, but at certain times you just need to let go and I think it's about time for Sid to let go of radio.

OK I Googled you both, and these are the first two images I got hits on.

My vote is for DL65 on practicality. Don, you are full of "character". Or something.

No, Dr D couldn't be the guy with the hat. This must be him riding a bike in the park?

This must be the football doldrums...

Epke put on 15 pounds in a month? Interesting.

4 pounds a week in the first month is nothing. Lift weights, eat a load of carbos and protein, you could do it, too. He might only pick up 5 pounds a month after that...

It is absolutely not nothing. Let's say the average guy that size burns 2000 calories a day by just existing. The workouts that he goes through (running and lifting) could easily burn another 2000. That means he has to take in 4000 calories a day just to maintain weight. They also have to be good calories, since I am guessing Kill would not be bragging about 15 pounds of fat (which I could probably do fairly easily).

If the number is accurate, it is pretty damn impressive and takes a lot of commitment on Epke's part (as well as Klein's part).

4000 calories, even good calories, is not that difficult to do. I'm guessing these guys eat 3 big meals and at least one smaller meal a day.

Hell, let's talk about losing weight! I could lose 10 lbs of ugly fat just by cutting off my head.

LOL - And taking your beer helmet off.

Correct. And that would keep him where he is. To then put on an additional 15 GOOD pounds (unlike us fat-asses) in a month is impressive not just because of the food intake but because of the lifting required also.

This topic is absolutely not worth a pissing contest. If it were easy to put on 15 good pounds in a month, everyone would do it. Since almost nobody does, I found it impressive. If you do not find it impressive, I wish you the best of luck in next month's Mr. Olympia contest.

From http://www.caloriesburnedliftingweights.org/

"Averages of 9 calories per minute are burnt just by pumping iron in the body under normal circumstances. The same amount of time will burn 10-12 calories when riding a bicycle or running. The advantage of weight lifting however is that you are given a metabolic spike that last for about an hour after working out."

According to http://www.healthstatus.com

An hour of vigorous weight lifting, 30 minutes of stretching and 30 minutes of aerobics for a 280 lb guy costs 1,470 calories.

I thought you were implying drug use. Actually, a diet of 4000+ calories is not too unreasonable for these guys. Seen a 20 year old guy eat? A few protein shakes mixed in and voila...

Good topic. And I'd say coach Kill sounded rather pleased when he mentioned Epke's weight gain. The past two weeks he's spent some time crediting the team's attitude, off season workout competition, and the S&C coaches work/influence on the players. in last week's report, coach Kill mentioned the strength and conditioning coaches sitting at the training table watching the food intake of the players (Not being a dietician, I would imagine starches, carbos, protein, lean foods would vary from player to player as well as position needs in food). I remember my basic training days (Army), many recruits - myself included - dropped a lot of pounds in a short period of time, and others gained a large number of pounds . . . vigorous workouts and square/balanced meals can bring about a lot changes in weight and physical fitness.

In any case, I find coach kill's emphasis on the competition taking place in the off season very encouraging. I assume the strength and conditioning program is a big part in the foundation laying process of the coaching staff. I also find it refreshing to hear Kill weekly on the Sports Huddle. I don't remember another coach that has been as accessible as he has been. Since he was hired, I believe only a couple weeks went by without an appearance on the Sunday morning show. It's nice to hear Gopher football being discussed weekly.

Go Gophers!!
