Jerry Kill's responses to questions by Sid and Dave on today's Sports Huddle:

1) Wisconsin QB (Wilson): "QB is a special player." He then sang praises of the Wisconsin players around Wilson. "Offensive line averages around 320 pounds . . . big kids up front. Wisconsin has good runningbacks, receivers . . . Montee Ball and Wilson are difference makers." Kill then said he wants the Gophers to get where Wisconsin is . . . "We'll get there!"

2) Kicking game: "We did some good things, except one punt (Orseske's punt that went only 4 yards after the ball hit the ground (backspin) and returned several yards backward)." After that punt Orseske did a good job punting. Again, Kill took responsibility for the kicking game. "We need to keep working hard and move on."

3) Sid said Kill sounded disappointed during the presser: Kill said you, "Wear emotions on your sleeve." Football is an emotional game, and sometimes it carries over to the presser's following the game. He then cited missed opportunities in the game and specifically mentioned the reverse and pass from Green to Eric Lair that didn't connect. He mentioned open receivers that were missed (either ball didn't get there or were dropped). Credited Wisconsin; however, he said they made mental errors that they didn't make the past two weeks.

4) Fake field goal for TD: "We felt we had to take some chances (Wettstein run for TD)." He cited a tight end that made a good block on the run, which was well played. "We had opportunities, just kicked ourselves in our heels." He said he didn't want to take anything away from Wisconsin . . . their (Wisconsin) offense kept their defense (which he said is very good) on the sidelines. "They have a good plan." "They're the best team by far that we've played."

5) There were 4 or 5 plays that could've made the game closer, but the Gophers didn't make them, "We didn't get it done." "We missed open receivers, which we didn't do the past two weeks."

6) Dave said Kill was meeting with some recruits during the program. He told him they were taking a commercial break and Kill would be meeting with the players. No names given. Later in the show, Sid asked Kill some recruiting questions: coaches are restricted now and cannot go on the road to visit recruits, however, that'll change in couple weeks. Kill said he had some kids in for visits this weekend. Sid asked about the jucos, reportedly visiting this weekend, Kill responded laughing . . . "Sid, you're trying to get me in trouble." Sid always seems to ask questions related to recruiting that coaches are prohibited from answering.

7) Bennett's kick off return for TD: "Big play. Bennett exploded through the hole with speed and good (team) execution." Then he bemoaned, "Too many mistakes up front." (Referenced untimely penalties and the mental and physical errors committed yesterday that weren't committed in the last two games. He also said he kept waiting and looking for someone to step up and make a big play and then Bennett opened the second half with the kick return for a touchdown.

8) Gray: He practiced this past week . . . he could pass but didn't run . . . he took a big shot to his back at MSU. "Play around him (Gray) was not good - Wisconsin had some to do with it - but we didn't execute up front."

9) Sid asked about the receiving corps: "Lack of help by receivers! We didn't execute; didn't make plays and Wisconsin did. Wisconsin made a lot of plays." "Take Wilson off the team and they're not the same team. . . he's mature, I understand he's a good kid. (Being chosen as Wisconsin's captain speaks volumes.)

10) Northwestern: "We'll feel we can win the next two games. We have to regroup . . . we need to get consistent . . . keep working and some good things will happen . . . and get ready for next week." Kill then continued to talk about the process of turning the program around.

Today's program was a little shorter than normal because of the recruits that coach Kill was meeting with during the Sunday morning show.

Go Gophers!!

Thanks, DL - did he happen to mention anything about the post-game celebration that's being talked about a lot on GH?

GopherLady,

There was no mention of the post game celebration as discussed on GopherHole. Also, the only questions asked of coach kill were by Sid and Dave. Sometimes there are queries by callers but not today. As mentioned earlier, Kill's appearance was a little shorter than normal, so maybe that's the reason for no caller questions.

Later in the Sports Huddle, Sid received a call from his "close personal friend," Barry Alvarez. Alvarez didn't want to focus on the Gophers when Sid asked him a question about the Gophers; however, he was complimetary of Kill. He said Kill has a plan and has been successful at previous stops. He also said the Gophers played hard throughout the game and have shown marked improvement as the season has progressed.

Later, a called asked Sid if Minnesota had pursued Alvarez when Gutekunst was let go? Sid said no. However, the caller and Sid may have forgotten that Alvarez was coaching at Wisconsin when Gutekunst was let go after the 1991 season.

Barry Alvarez's first season at Wisconsin was in 1990 and the Gophers beat Wisconsin 21-3. In 1991, Wisconsin defeated the Gophers 19-16. As many have noted, in his first season Barry Alvarez went 1-10. The next two years he finished 5-6, and it was in season four that they went 10-1-1, and their lone loss was to the Gophers 28-21. The Badgers tied for 1st and won the Rose Bowl. Alvarez told Sid and Dave this morning that his first recruiting class was a good one and as seniors they had their breakout year.

Go Gophers!!

Thanks for the great updates! As someone that doesn't get up early on Sunday mornings, I really appreciate and look forward to reading them! :)

Excellent summary yet again! When I miss the sports huddle (which is frequently). I always hope DL65 has posted a summary. I hope Kill keeps making appearances most weeks during the offseason.

Kill was asked about the post-game "celebration" during his post-game interview on the radio and his terse reply was, "No comment."

I saw that one, which is why I wondered if he elaborated more this morning. Rare for him to say that.
