Four years and we can't rely on the kickers still, put CAB back on the return and he gets taken out of the game. We can have quibbles over the offensive coaching but I don't any coaching changes happen there, but everyone agrees our special teams are anything but special.

I tend to agree but is it coaching or poor recruiting at the position? Also, how much of our kicking issues this year been COVID related? I really felt Lantz was coming into his own towards the end of the year last season. And remember, he was kicking as a true freshman. I still think he can be a solid kicker when healthy.

He got a raise this season. Maybe he has dirt on PJ that’s the only way he could have kept his job after 2019 was done.

Yeah, to me it’s more a recruiting and evaluation problem. I would generally say let the head coach make the decisions about his staff

The one time we actually tried to return a punt we had a hold too. The 26 year old punter boomed one a whole 30 yards right before halftime giving Wisconsin a chance to score. We did have great kickoff coverage after tying the game at 17, that should have set us up for great field position if Rossi's defense could get off the field against a 3rd string QB and a bunch of skill guys that looked like walk ons.

I had a bad feeling about the FG in OT, but I always have a bad feeling about thigns that should be sure things for Minnesota football teams. We've had 4-5 lifetimes of absolutely brutal losses snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.

I’ll never talk about another mans job but he needs to go

But who is in charge of recruiting and evaluation for the kickers? I would assume the special teams coach...

It’s hard to know if it’s coaching, recruiting, or development. PJ has used a fair amount of scholarship capital on special teams, but continue to have subpar special teams. I’m not going to pin the OT FG on the coach- the kicker is a senior walkon with no experience prior to a few games ago. What happened to Lantz this year? Had to be injury, as he never appeared. I agree with the post above- Lantz looked to at least be competent to decent when he kicked last year. Return game has been abysmal PJ’s entire tenure, and special teams as a whole has been below average AT BEST.

Good thing we continue to offer scholarships to our specialists when our ability to evaluate talent appears to suck

The raise was true. The other thing was satire.
Amazing some people don't pick up on that. Like this guy actually thought you were putting out there the only reason our special teams coach had a job is because he had pictures of PJ. I mean..... proof anyone can post here.

listen to the podcast of the "Gopher Football" show that Gaard did with Ryan Burns Sunday morning on KFAN. Burns went on an epic special-teams rant about how bad the Gophers' special teams have been. "last time they kicked a 40-yd FG was X games ago..." and so forth.

and Burns made the point that Fleck's coaching philosophy is control time of possession and control field position. In order to do that, you need good special teams.

To me it’s been worse than the defense this year. As bad as the defense has been they have also been set up to fail with moronic specials teams plays and offensive turnovers. Not saying the defense was not terrible, but I look at just how poor the offense did in the fourth quarters of games this year. So many opportunities for the offense to win the game and they failed to do that.

Concur something needs to change. Probably several things need to change in Special Forces, but clearly underperforming even beyond this year.

Also, I love him but CAB should not be fielding KOs. Too valuable elsewhere.

Burns has constantly raised the fact of how putrid our special teams were this year.

Wenger was with Fleck since the start of WMU. Fleck has also put him charge of coaching the "Rush End" position (the 2-point stance DE's, Mafe is the good one). Tough for me to see Fleck being able to cut him.
