Sources: Ben Howland to be fired Sunday

An interesting note for those that like to claim Minnesota has "bad" fans: UCLA's attracted more than 10,000 fans to the newly remodeled Pauley Pavilion just FIVE times this year. FIVE crowds of over 10K for a team that WON that PAC 12!

Yikes. That's brutal.

@BryanDFischer: UCLA statement: Contrary to multiple media reports this evening, UCLA has not fired men’s basketball coach Ben Howland.

Players living in a city the size of LA more than anything need some mature fatherly guidance. In fact maybe some grandfatherly guidance.

Some of the kids seem to have their head up their ass and need someone to 'rectify' that situation.

I can think of one retired MD dude in Moorhead that is semi-qualified for the position.

Having attended undergrad in California and living there for 12 years, this is not unusual. At any program. Its California.. southern california has decent weather in the winter and lots of stuff to do, college life is great for those going to college, for everyone else there is too much to do.. they show up for the big games and when the programs win. Especially the LA colleges. I think the smaller D1 programs in California actually have more passionate support (not in number of fans, but devotion).

VCU's Shaka Smart to UCLA? ESPN says so!................

UCLA coach Ben Howland is expected to be fired today. They are "courting" Shaka Smart for the new coach in Westwood. Go Gophers!!

Of course they are. Smart should be the first call for every open coaching position. However, I do not see UCLA as a good fit for him. With that being said, it would be tough to turn down a job at a blue blood school...

Why is it not a good fit?

In a way, yes. I specialized in a condition that several Gopher Fans are afflicted with called "Opticular Rectitis.

Heard on ESPN radio this morning that Howland is gone and that Smart is the leading candidate for the job.

Why is it not a good fit?

Personality, playing style, and the possibility of NCAA sanctions just to name a few. Money talks, but Howland only made 700k a year more than Smart. Factor in the CA taxes and cost of living, and the fact that VCU will give Shaka a raise to keep him, he wont be leaving for the $$$.

Doubt it. Less than 2 years ago they raised his base pay from $350,000 to $1.2 million. They probably can't afford much, if any, more.

Virginia Commonwealth athletics director Ed McLaughlin said he hasn’t had discussions with basketball coach Shaka Smart about augmenting Smart’s contract, but “everything is on the table” after the season ends.

“I think we want to make sure the day the season ends that coach Smart is very, very happy here and he wants to be here a long time,” McLaughlin said.

“I think we have to look at are there things we can do in addition to what we’re doing right now to continue to move our program forward? I know that’s what is most important to him.”

Talk is cheap. Whatever VCU offers him, he could almost double it with the money that UCLA and other programs will offer him.

Howland shouldn't be fired. He led them to 3 consecutive final fours at one point. Lifetime contract! :)

Wichita State coach should be the first call for everyone!
