Per Jim:

I have never seen anything quite like it in 36 years of covering sports in Minnesota.

On Sunday afternoon, the Timberwolves sold $1 tickets for fans to enter Target Center to see the unveiling of the team’s new logo, and more than 7,000 attended.

There is no doubt that there have been Wolves games that have drawn fewer people in the stands than Sunday’s event.

This was a logo unveiling, to reveal a new logo that, while attractive, is not a dramatic departure from its predecessor. Why the rabid interest?
  1. Minnesota might be the state of hockey, but Minneapolis is a basketball town. And as popular as hockey is in hockey hotbeds around the state, basketball is played and followed everywhere. Give Minneapolitans a good team and they’ll show up. Even to see a new logo.
  2. The Wolves are on the best run in franchise history. They’ve won seven playoff series ever. Five of those series victories have come in the last three years.
  3. The modern fan does not believe in offseasons. The modern fan constantly craves, expects and is rewarded with information, speculation, entertainment and ways to connect to their team. Which is why the NFL has turned mock drafts and its schedule reveal into major news events.
  4. The Wolves’ newish owners have given fans nothing to gripe about. Glen Taylor, who owns the Star Tribune, oversaw four championships with the Lynx and hired Tim Connelly to transform the franchise, but it was Marc Lore and Alex Rodriguez who pushed for the Connelly hire and who rekindled the franchise’s relationship with Kevin Garnett, who took part in the hype video shown on the scoreboard Sunday.
The logo reveal party filled one side of the lower bowl with fans, many of whom waited in line to get their picture taken at midcourt with the new logo, which is an upgrade.

Howl Wolves!!
