Souhan RIPS Maturi, Tubby, says Brew "has made a mess of the football program"

What is your point? By tying this statement to the seniors, it indicates one thing, "he was expecting to win the Big 10 championship in 2007."

Good. That's what he should expect every year. It doesn't mean it will happen. Every team I ever played on with a good coach set the same type of expectation. You should always start your goals with a conference championship. Had he set the bars lower then he would have given the seniors less than they deserved.

My high school b-ball coach told us that we had a chance to contend for the conference title and make a run to the state tournament. It didn't happen and we finished below .500. Was my coach bad? Hardly...he's in the MN Coaches HOF.

Maturi is a disgusting excuse for a hack. I don't like Souhan, but this article is way, way overdue. Hopefully it will raise some kind of consciousness about the horrific situation in our school's athletic department.

He is so smart, why is he writing for a second rate rag which is in deep financial trouble? Why is he not writing for the NY times? Why is he not stopping the oil leak?

Might wanna check on the financial status of the NY Times...:D

Carter and Watkins are SPECIAL!

As others have noted, there was no timeline on the Rose Bowl. Also, "couldn't deliver" is also wrong since he is still the coach. "Hasn't delivered yet" would have been more...whats the word...ah yes, accurate. I don't disagree that people might be pissy that he hasn't gotten us there yet and that's their right. But that doesn't mean the program is a mess (which was Souhan's unvalidated point).

As others have noted, he didn't say anything about the Insight Bowls that I'm aware of.

And I know he didn't promise no MAC/lower conference games. Because EVERY BCS SCHOOL SCHEDULES THESE GAMES. And as others have noted this false statement conveniently ignores the significant improvement in non-conf schedules under Brew (which he is also ripped for).

The bolded statement is a factual statement. Its almost enough to help me forget the fact that everything else in your post was wrong or poorly phrased.

Why do we even care what this guy says? He is the most negative spinmaster of Gopher football probably ever. He sounds afraid to be patient because Brewster and his Staff may well get the job done. He would rather everything fall apart now so he can be right; or at least clost to being right. With all due respect to Mr. Souhan, BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Depends on what people think sooner rather than later means.

Sad reminders above as to how Gopher football expectations have fallen.

Three years ago, there was talk of Big 10 Championships and Rose Bowls.

Today, the brew is mumbling thoughts about "why no one has won here in 50 years"

Year 4 promises to be a rather stiff challenge, too

I see nothing to be negative about this statement from Coach Brewster.

Why do you think each year did not present a stiff challenge? Nothing has changed in that respect. This is Big Time Big Ten Football; one of the most competetive conferences in the country you should note. The goals have not changed and the fact that the program has been in somewhat of a funk spell for championships is no secret. Nevertheless, if we focus on the positive, we will notice that we are building something good here. Not perfect and without setbacks, but GOOD.

Just face the facts - Gopher Football is not big time. Brewster will not change that.

The best bet for the Gophers to get support and become a big time program might honestly be if the Vikings leave, then they can be the only show in town for a few months in the fall. (Save the Twins I guess)...

Hey Starge--nes,

You say 'nothing has changed'....

Except for the fact that brewster couldn't find enough of a challenge with a more 'sane' non-conference schedule.
He had to pull the stunt of getting Southern Cal in a home-and-home:eek:
And Texas, too:eek:

Who is kidding who?

Well..........brewster is a macho man

He's got to continually prove to everyone who will listen that he's a tough guy:rolleyes:
that he likes an offense built around smash-mouth football...
that he doesn't want to load up on non-conference cupcakes, a la Wisconsin...

IMHO, if the Gophers are 1-2 as of the evening of September 18th, then Joel Maturi would have to look seriously at naming Cosgrove as his interim head coach.

Four years into the brewster's program...and the Gophers are NO WHERE near where they were when Mason was fired...

Coach Mason, You had your turn. Now stop trying to make yourself relevant again. Gopher Nation remembers you WEAK Defenses too well. We know Defense Wins Championships and we are much closer now than you ever were, thank you very much.
