Souhan: Gophers fans, anticipating traffic this season, leave earlier. Like September

I think the column is rather witty. Clever first-person technique. It hurts because we're fans of a program that IS that bad -- that HAS withered to a bottom-of-a-declining conference level. What disturbs me about Souhan, Reusse, other writers, and posters here, is that no one wants to discuss, let alone solve, the problem. WHY are we sub-standard? What are we doing to identify the cause? What can be done to remedy the problem? What can't be done? We fuss and fret and blame writers for mocking our lack of success, but we don't insist on solving the problem. Go ahead and trash me as you do everyone who is considered disloyal if they admit to the program's weakness but that won't make the program better. We need to analyze what it is that makes us non-competitive and solve that as other schools (Wisconsin, Kansas State, e.g.) have done.

Well said. I'm no big Souhan fan, but this place is all too willing to kill the messenger and ignore the obvious message. We're still too early in Kill's tenure to say what will happen, but the average fan is clearly underwhelmed for whatever reason.

1) Column is written

2) GHers express outrage/hurl insults/make up nicknames for media writer (Fat Pat, Burrito, Soupcan, etc.)

3) "I stopped reading 'insert writer' years ago. You all know this because I've told you this in every single thread"

4) "This is exactly the reaction they wanted...don't click!!"

5) "Stop creating threads about 'insert writer'!!!"

Rinse and repeat.

Oh so true.

"I hope he enjoys that special line for unemployed mascots who weren't asked to be mascots, but he should be prepared: Every five minutes, that guy who used to bang the newspaper on the Target Center court during Wolves games is going to ask for stock tips and gum, and the San Diego Chicken..."

Uh...really?

Just really, really horrible.

Jim Souhan is the equivalent to a "seat filler" at the Oscars. I truly can't believe he will look back at some of these columns with pride.

and my #1 fan finally chimes in. where you been guy? love the way you love me. we are meant for each other. don't ever change. stay golden pony boy.

Sorry I was so late. I may have lost a step.:)

Here is a tweet from MinnPost's media critic, David Brauer:

"Sports fan I respect just emailed me to say this was the worst column he ever read: (link omitted)"

Some responses:

From @freealonzo
"Why did I know that was a @SouhanStrib column before I even clicked on it?"

From @trtx84
"What's funny is I was able to guess who wrote it before even opening the link. #SouhanBeingSouhan"

From @krobhica
"would that be called mailing it in?"

From @scottrubin
"whenever you think his columns can't get any worse, he somehow outdoes himself"

From @jakedepue
"He is an absolute abomination in every way and it is embarrassing to the local media scene that he holds the position he does."

And from @scott_bush
"made it through 3 paragraphs. What do I win?"

And of course my comment when I retweeted:
"That's 3 minutes of my life I'll never get back."

Yea, the bold statements. It is actualy dicussed on GH ad-nauseam about what can be done to make the program better. You must have missed ALL those threads, because there are A LOT OF THEM.

"Souhan with another bad article."

In other news, the sun came out this morning.

Wow. Clever and witty are two words I would not associate with that lame brain column. And, it has nothing to do with the fact he bashed the Gophers. It was just simply a terrible column, in my opinion. You thought it was clever and witty. To each his own.

Tough to speak on behalf of others but I will make an attempt. FanSinceTheFifties brings up reasonable points that a journalist could make a reasonable attempt at seeking answers to. I believe FanSinceTheFifties is making a point that Journalists can be a major part of a problem or a valued part of a solution. It is evident, by their body of work, which part our local writers have chosen to play.

I suggest that we just bring up and share our favorite Seinfeld moments every time a Souhan writes a Gopher sports column. This way we can avoid the vicious circle some of us (myself included) get into everytime Baldy McWhimperson thinks he has a clever thought and puts pen to paper.

Next column will get this thread title from me: "Souhan Bashes Gopher Fans - Hey, remember when George pushed all those kids down when he thought there was a fire?"

Come on guys. Jim was tired of 'Baldy McBalderson' being his all-time doozy. So he simply resolved to get hammered and outdo it. Juuuust missed.

When Joe C. moved to the Gopher football beat, the Strib should have used the opportunity to move Jim back to Twins beat writer. It's literally the only team in town where he has more insight than the average drunk at the sports bar.

I am guilty as well. I thought I would try to change the narrative on here a little bit. HAHA. :)

So, yes! I love this idea! Gopher Hole idea of the year!

I wonder if pulling Nelson's redshirt still bothers him...hmmm guess we will never know how he feels.

The Twins are also the only team in town that has a sports leader that Souhan writes open love letters about. Terry Ryan could have traded Denard Span for a broken batting practice bat and a 4-year old Dome Dog on a bun and Souhan would have genuflected for Ryan in this morning's newspaper. The only thing more predictable than Souhan railing on the Gophers is his written (newspaper) and verbal (radio) fellatio for Terry Ryan. Jim loves him some Terry Ryan.

Speaking of bad crowds, anyone see how many empty seats there are at Stanford tonight? I know the weather sucks but the upper decks are not full at all.

How about a little more class here. That type of metaphor is not acceptable.
