Souhan column: Lowest common denominator? That's AD Maturi

Get a clue, Pal. For over 40 years the people in charge at the U have not been concerned about winning championships. For much of that time they have acted like there were embarrassed that the U even had an intercollegiate athletics program (e.g. Malcom Moos, C. Peter McGrath, Ken Keller, etc.). Not much has changed. Winning championships is still down the priority list for them. They think championships are nice but the U has many more important things to worry about. Joel Maturi inherited this culture at the U. He didn't create it. GopherHolers need to start putting the blame where it belongs. If anyone thinks the next AD is going to be able to change things you are sadly mistaken. Especially in this time of declining financial support from the Minnesota Legislature. Gopher fans who were around in the 1960's already understand this.

I was around in the 60s. It was never this bad. As long as people have your attitude about this, nothing will change. It's not ok, and it can be changed. The next AD can change it.

+1!!!!

Souhan is getting more and more mean spirited with every column. I certainly don't look forward to reading his columns anymore.

I agree with his sentiment that Joel is fiddling while Rome is burning but there is really no need to be so vitriolic (bitterly scathing) in his condemnation.

Condemn maturi in a mean spirited way if you will...

condemn maturi in a kinder, gentler way if that's your thing...
condemn maturi with lots of Minnesota nice, if that's what you do...
It really doesn't matter how you condemn that silly little ranger...
just as long as you make sure that you DO condemn that badger joel macturi character for the fact that he has run the revenue sports totally into the ground and his general trend with the revenue sports is down. Condemnation is exactly what bjm deserves.

If you fail to condemn the job bjm has done, people might mistakenly confuse your stand on the issue and think that it would be ok to extend his contract even further into the future. He is SO old already that the new prexy K dude will have to buy out his contract when he throws macturi under the bus!

A new AD is needed right now!
