Something Up?

DJ Johnson was a significant contributor as a redshirt Freshman. What’s going on down there?

One dealing with personal issues according to the Hawkeye site. One left football altogether and decided to come back. One (defensive back) felt that the secondary was too crowded according to one poster.

They also indicated that the players might be a good fit for Northern Illinois.

In other words, the Iowa posters “cooled on them.”

They just got a grad transfer DT from northern illinois, three year starter.

Also this guy but he seemed to have other things going on:

Wonder if Miller would consider coming up here. Great chemistry here if this is something he's looking for.

4* OT from 2019 class, in which we only signed Guedet.

Hell yeah we'd take them. It looks like we didn't offer, not sure why. Although it could've been because at the time we had 4 OT in the 2018 class, but most of those guys have left now. Faalele is a starter.

They maybe running some guys off to open up scholarships. I see they just signed off the portal the #9 rated DT from Northern Ill. We could have used him.

Seems like we never get much out of Iowa. Somehow the state of Iowa has almost 3 times more P5 verbals than the state of Minnesota has, despite us having almost double the population.

They don't have hockey.....or fishing....or women.... they have pork feedlots....we get porkchops

Wild guess: there’s no way that Iowa high schools have more total players in the NFL than Minnesota. Per capita, they probably do.

But that doesn’t explain brown’s P5 verbals comment. For some dumb reason, there must be 3x more P5 schools looking for recruits in Iowa than Minn, is what that might seem to be saying?

With 2 P5 schools in state, that likely is part of it. Especially when ISU isn't attracting the higher end talent for the most part, despite being pretty good the last few years.

It doesn't seem right that we'd lose 4-Star players like Quinn Carroll, Bryce Benhart, and Riley Mahlman right from our own backyard. Highly rated instate kids go out of state all the time for a myriad of reasons.

Oh well.

MN is #25 and Iowa 31 in current active NFL players by home state. https://www.pro-football-reference.com/friv/birthplaces.htm
Birthplaces is not a good measure. People move around a lot.

First guy on that list, Steve Smith, born in Anchorage, Alaska, but didn't grow up or play high school football there. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steve_Smith_(wide_receiver,_born_1985)

That said, probably less moving around for guys born in Iowa and Minnesota, than other places. But I'm not going to take the time to research that.

Rather, it would be a much better measure (in my opinion) if the list was based on the high school program they played at as seniors.
