So they Vikings (who seem to listen to their fanbase) are requesting more tailgating

Heck even under Mason, when they had their best success the big games they won were on the road, the games they lost? Those were seemingly always at Home.

That never occurred to me before. If you were to rank the top 7 Mason wins, the only one in the dome was 2003 Wisconsin. Oregon, Arkansas, Alabama, Penn St., Ohio St., Michigan all outside Minneapolis.

And I agree with you on this. Just saying he had a few more obstacles than the Vikes do.

Looking back, one of the saddest parts of the 'Maturi era' was what was once considered a great achievement. The 'Tubby Smith like hire'.

Here we go again...let it go old man...let Tubby go. Football forum.

If the Vikings can convince the city of Minneapolis to build more surface parking after they're already footing the bill to build 2 ramps to subsidized car storage for 1,800 fans plus multi-million dollar skyways connecting to the stadium, I'd be surprised. I'm actually a big fan of reconnecting Cedar-Riverside/West Bank to DTE by decking over 35W and reconnecting the grid... but not to put surface parking lots in place to satiate some 850 tailgating cars 8x a year. (and yes, even if those 850 cars have an average of 10 fans join the party, those people could easily meet up in a park or bar as they do meet the parked car in a lot). It would be a giant waste of money to deck over for surface parking.

The same goes for the U. For now, we have surface parking galore (for an urban football stadium), but that won't last as the U continues to build more research and other buildings. They'll replace the parking spots with ramps, and maybe they can be clever about allowing tailgating on the top levels. And yes, maybe Maturi and the U admin could have fought harder with the city to loosen tailgaiting rules/regs for private lot owners by recognizing that a great gameday experience on non-U owned lots isn't competing with their own, it complements the entire atmosphere. But we're getting something else going on - a veritable sh!tstorm of development in Dinkytown and Stadium Village. People, restaurants, bars, shops, LRT with a pedestrian mall. All of which have the ability to create (naturally) an urban gameday atmosphere with many people eating/drinking in bars pregame. Maybe if there is less surface parking more people will pay to park in yards/driveways in Dinkytown and create a dispersed, shared tailgate atmosphere. Maybe the U will catch on and use McNamara Plaza or the Mall to do a Grove type experience. Whatever. The reality is that what the Vikings are asking for (especially after getting $500M from the state/city) is outrageous and expecting the U to do the same is just as ludicrous.

RailBaronYarr, I enjoy your observations on this topic and your writings on urbanmsp.com forums and agree with a lot of what your wrote.

The intent of this thread was to highlight that the Vikings are listening to their fanbase who are requesting more room for tailgating and thus are requesting that the city of Mpls re-zone a larger area of DTE to include tailgating on surface lots already in place. We've deadhorse.gifon this forum on that feeling the U did not do enough in the infancy of TCF Bank Stadium to create a better gameday atmosphere. That window of opportunity has seemingly closed in my opinion and now would have to be initiated by the business / property owners around campus who would have to advocate for private parking tailgating approval from the city of Mpls. I doubt that there is much collective interest on that front as the financial gain to a small business would be negligible given all the nuances of setting up parking lot for tailgating 7-8 times a years. Now with the Vikings moving in for 2 years that may change but I have my doubts.

I just wish the u would look outside the box at what they can control. An idea which has been brought up on this site before and mentioned in the above post by RailBaronYarr is having the U make available the green areas around the McNamara Alumni Center / Northup Mall / the open space above the Nolte Center garage between the Nolte Center and the Bell Museum right off of University Avenue. The latter area I don't believe has been proposed for tailgating on GopherHole to my knowledge so I'll patent that thought.

I can't remember the poster who has noted what Vanderbilt does to generate a better gameday atmosphere. I don't see why the U can't attempt a version of Vandyville http://www.vucommodores.com/sports/m-footbl/spec-rel/vandyville-experience.html now that a light rail station is within a couple minute walk from the above on-campus locations. I believe if the U were to manage and rent out tents / tables similar to what Vanderbilt does for their fans http://www.vucommodores.com/sports/m-footbl/spec-rel/vandyville-tailgates.html fans could simply load up a cooler of food / beverages and unpack at their designated tent and tailgate on campus a short walk from the stadium. The U could also manage a way to secure coolers while the fans attend the game (think something akin to a coat check or hotel luggage storage for a nominal fee).

I guess we'll just have to settle for an improved tailgating experience for the students this year as the above proposal would probably have to go through about 12 different University committees, get approval from 7 separately run departments, an ok from the Aramark / Coca-Cola CEO's, the Metropolitan Council and some deities not affiliated with the University.

I brought up the decking because it was mentioned in the article as talked about during the committee meeting. It goes to show the depth the Vikings and fans are willing to push for their tailgating - something that most people would probably consider a ludicrous idea (spending millions to create air rights development possibility over a freeway) suddenly seems reasonable idea when talking about protecting a tailgating atmosphere for 8 home games a year.

I agree the U could work outside the lines of traditional lot tailgating. If they want partners to help push for it (or implement it, even), they could talk to Val-U Liquors, Dinkytown Wine & Spirits, and any other SV/DT food providers to help with costs of set-up and security for on-campus park tailgating. Call in food trucks and allow them to park on the Mall sidewalks. Something, anything, to get things going.
