Smotrycz, Christian and Brundidge Decide to Leave Mich - UPDATED (4/9): Burke staying

That seems like a good reason to leave after just one year. If you're not a potential lottery pick after your freshman year, I think it's stupid to leave. He'll either end up not playing much as a back up or play most of the season in the NBDL. Would make much more sense to return for a second year.

Maybe he's worried that he won't be able to remain a first round pick if he returns to school? He isn't exactly a player who was expected to be an NBA prospect. Maybe this is the highest his stock will ever get? Nine times out of ten I agree with your statement though. I love seeing guys return to school and as a player, you don't want to leave too soon when it would benefit you long term to return to school and develop more first. This is one scenerio though where I don't really blame him from a business perspective, but if he gets drafted second round and doesn't end up making it it would be a real shame. Good luck to him.

“@ESPNHomeCourt: Huge for the #Wolverines. RT @umichbball Big News from Ann Arbor! Trey Burke will be continuing his collegiate career with U-M!”

Probably a smart move. Michigan gonna be a tough out next year.

Agreed. They may be the big 10 favorites next year.

Indiana (if Zeller and Watford are both back)

Watford has said he is returning, just today I believe.

“@GaryParrishCBS: And it's now official. Watford and Zeller have formally announced returns. Indiana could be preseason No. 1 (depending on UK's roster.)”

Over Indiana? Do you have some sort of bias against Tom Crean or something?

tOSU over I4 for many reasons, including Crean isn't a good coach, I don't know if Hanner will get to play, Yogi will be a true freshman, lots of new & talented faces for I4, OSU has a ton of talent returning and will likely pick up some additional talent in the near future.

I4 should be a great team and I don't fault people for thinking they are the team to beat in the Big Ten or the nation next year.. I just have a different expectation on what will actually transpire.

Straying off topic here, GW, but a serious question for you, and I ask this as someone who's not a big fan of Crean (pacing & clapping, pacing & clapping, pacing & clapping), either.

Why do you hold so much hostility toward Crean that it moves you to take digs at him at any opportunity? I get it that you're pi**ed off he left Marquette, but what I don't understand is the constant digs at Crean years after he left Marquette. The way you talk about him, one would think he left your favorite basketball program in complete shambles. Quite the contrary. Seems to me he left Marquette in great shape, and to Buzzer's credit he's continued to move it forward, even elevating it.

Thanks, I'm just curious.

Tony Parker would be a huge addition for them if they happen to get him. If they do I might rethink where I anticipate them to finish in the standings, but until then I'm sticking with Indiana and Michigan to finish ahead of them. How quickly Yogi can get acclimated to Big Ten basketball will determine whether they are 1st or 2nd behind Michigan in my opinion. I have a feeling Yogi could be a turnover machine in year one, but his quickness alone will allow him to make an impact right away IMO. If he's able to make a quick adjustment to the next level and play under control I think they're definitely a top 5 team. Kentucky will probably be #1 again, assuming they get Nerlens and/or Shabazz.

This would be a conversation better suited for offline. I will tell you this, though: I am not pissed off he left Marquette and never was.

To his credit (literally), he did provide some wonderful analysis during the National Championship game:

"When we signed Tyshawn Taylor at Marquette, I always thought he was A National Championship level guard. I was right."

That's cool, exactly what we've learned to expect from you.

We were a better team with him off the court down the stretch and you consider him our MVP? Dre & Rodney were our most important players, even Austin was "more important" to the team this year.

No. Let me clarify for you: in order for Minnesota to be successful, they absolutely needed Ralph to do well. If Minnesota was going to have a good season, Ralph had to have a good season. If he didn't have a good season, then Minnesota would not. He did not have a good season and predictably the team did not either. Context, man... context.

As for the 2011-12 season, I completely disagree with Dre and Rodney being the most important players. Rodney was by far #1, with Austin Hollins and Julian Welch at 2 and 3. Did Andre Hollins play very well at the end of the year? Absolutely. However, Welch added more to the team during 2011-12 as a whole.

Ralph had to have a good season. If he didn't have a good season, then Minnesota would not.

Twist your story. Conveniently you didn't give that comment with any context big-man.

No. It was no surprise to me. He had the season I expected, maybe just a touch worse. Why you would think he could have been our most important player is perplexing.

I'm not twisting any story - you're the one who is taking something I said out of context (over and over and over again). I gave plenty of context with my comments on the importance of Ralph earlier this year.

I said, "Ralph has the ability to add more value to this team than anyone else and must do so if Minnesota is to be competitive in Big Ten play." THIS is where I said it.

I also said in that same article (when the Gophers were 12-1 and folks were excited), "At this stage, I'd project Minnesota to finish 9th or 10th in the Big Ten"... in other words, I didn't expect them to be very competitive in Big Ten play, i.e., I didn't expect big things out of an injured Ralph Sampson. As it turned out, Minnesota finished tied for 9th place... (10th for seeding purposes in the BTT).

You're the one twisting the story.
