Simply The Best QBs In Big Ten?

If there's any legitimacy in this, it's nice to be called #3 in the Big Ten. The future may be bright.

I'm all for any writer that throws Weber a friggin bone. Too many are dead set on Gray even though we haven't seen one snap in a real game with the simplified offense yet.

Yeah, I really question Stanzi being rated at the top but there certainly is an argument for same given his win/loss record. But frankly, I think he is overrated and simply the benefactor of great Olines and/or strong running games. He only looks for one or two receivers at most. I can't wait to turn our quicker and faster secondary on him. As long as the LBing crew steps up strong this year, our Defense is going to give some QBs headaches. And Weber with more than last year Gray mix is going to do us much better I believe as well.

In 2009 the Iowa rushing attack ranked 95th in the country. DJK, McNutt, Moeaki (who missed 4 games due to injury) and Trey Stoss all had over 30 receptions. Stanzi has issues with interceptions, there is no doubt but to say he is overrated based on your criteria is weak at best. In the 2008 game against Minnesota (arguably Brewster's best team), Stanzi threw 3 touchdown passes and for 255 yards in just over 3 quarters of play.

All Qbs do better when their offensive line is better....that would have been true of Weber this season if the O-line was not so atrocious.

I look forward to the Iowa receivers and Stanzi dictating the game against Minnesota this November. Stanzi's only start against Minnesota resulted in a 55-0 end. If Stanzi benefits from anything it is the Iowa defense that always gives the offense a chance.

Even if Minnesota has success against Iowa defensively, remember, Minny has not scored a single point against Iowa in 8 quarters. Minnesota will be lucky to find a running game this season and with the loss of Decker will need other receivers to step up. If Minnesota's offense cannot score touchdowns none of this will matter.

Yes, I know when he started against the Gophers, he had Old Shonn Greene; you can not deny that significant boost. But all of that is in the past and you have to come to The Bank this year where plenty of WHOOPASS will be handed out. Trust me, there will be a significantly different running game for the Gophers. You should note that you have to somewhat retool on the Oline in Iowas this year and a few more of your QB's flaws may become a bit more evident. Admittedly, the Iowas Defense should be good this year again, yet the Gopher Defense will not be any slouch. I really look forward. GO GOPHERS!!

Shonn Greene was helpful, no doubt. Nonetheless, Stanzi won 10 games this season with a 95th ranked rushing attack. Iowa does have a few new guys to plug-in on the O-line but Kirk Ferentz was an o-line coach in the NFL and has typically maintained solid line play @ Iowa. Minnesota's defense is not comparable to Iowa. Iowa has 8 returning starters, the best d-line in the big10 and great depth in the secondary. Minnesota will return Kyle Theret and Kim Royston, who are nothing special. Royston has a broken leg, I assume he will be back for the beginning of the season but he will miss practices. Theret should be suspended for a game for his DWI. Minnesota may have 0 defensive starters from last season against MTSU. This is not to say that Minnesota does not have some talent on defense waiting in the wings but I do not see the Minny defense holding up against the top 25 opponents (Ohio State, Penn State, Iowa, Wisconsin, and USC). For the record, after watching games at the Bank last season....the place seems far from intimidating. Minnesota was 4-3 at the Bank and will probably be 3-4 in it this season or worse.

...and you have to come to The Bank this year...

Above quote is a good reminder.

With the Iowegians traveling north this November, we'll have to make sure to beef up the 'latrine patrol' at TCF.

You never know what those Iowegians will do once they decide to share a bathroom stall.;)

You make some really good points and seem to be very informed about the old news. All I am going to say in response is I love an overconfident opponent. In fairness, WARNING! THINGS AREN'T WHAT THEY SEEM HERE. And really, no gross stuff in our New Stadium. PASS THE WORD, PLEASE!

Which still does not change the fact that it is still 6-0 in National Championships.

Yep, and the Gopher program deserves credit for those just like anyone. This argument was about QB's and next year's game. Whenever there is a civil debate about the current state of the programs, Minnesota fans always resort to the glory days of WII and the Great Depression and making Iowa jokes. I know it feels good to make fun of Iowans but in the end it must get tiring to have to resort to jokes when Iowa continues to beat Minnesota regularly on the field. I hope Minnesota can put a better product on the field because it will be better for the rivalry and better for the conference.

I don't agree. Stanzi is solid in his play and does something none of the rest can do reliably, he manages the game. All of the rest of the starters, including Weber, try to do too much and than they make mistakes.

In recent events, since the gophers won the big 10, the United States landed on the moon.

PapaHawk21,

Seriously...I have a question for you.

Since the Gophers last won a Rose Bowl...how many Rose Bowls has Iowa won?

Please advise at your earliest convenience:D

And exactly what does the "-0" represent? Does it mean that in the six years Minnesota has been voted National Champions, they've never not been voted National Champions?

It means that Iowa has 0 national championships...duh.

Does the recent Orange Bowl victory count for nothing? A BCS bowl game with a grand history. Iowa would have gone to the Rose Bowl in 2002 but the Orange Bowl selected Iowa before the Rose Bowl had its choice.

Iowa has 5 Rose Bowl appearances with 2 victories. Minnesota has 2 Rose Bowl appearances with 1 victory.

Minnesota's national championships are commendable and worthy of respect. Again, 99% of people on this board were not alive the last time the gophers won the big10. Minnesota has had one 10 win season in just over 40 years and finished in the top 3 of the big 10 once. Minnesota has zero new year's day bowl appearances since 1967 whereas Iowa has been to 9 new year's day bowl games. Iowa has been to 24 bowl games whereas Minnesota has been to 14. Iowa has 13 bowl wins to Minnesota's 5 bowl wins. Iowa has won 14 of the last 20 in the series and in great position to continue winning in the rivalry in the next few years. Most people on this board are already predicting a loss to Iowa next season. If Minnesota can finish 6th in the conference this season they will probably find themselves in a new year's day bowl game.

ESPN devised a formula to rank college football programs: http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=3842161

Iowa ranks 30th and Minnesota ranks 33rd. If all of you want to brag about the 1930s and 1940s then you also must admit that this program has had one of the largest drop offs in the history of college football. Minnesota went from being a premier program to being a bottom tier team in the big10.

PapaHawk21,

Let me repeat my question for you, since you didn't answer above...

In the 50 years since the Gophers last won a Rose Bowl...how many Rose Bowls has Iowa won?

Iowa has won zero Rose Bowls in that time as you clearly know. Maybe you can address the facts I presented in the previous response. At least Iowa has been on the big stage multiple time during that time period. Minnesota has not been there once. In 2003 (your best season in 40 years), when Minnesota won 10 games...you still lost to Iowa (40-22) and did not go to a new year's day bowl game. I guess when your fans do not travel then 9 wins is not sufficient for an invite to a Jan. 1 Bowl game.

There...now that's better. That didn't hurt too much, did it? :D

Well, without using context, I'll ask you a similar question. How many Rose Bowls has Minnesota won? Iowa has won two.

Your retort would be Minnesota has won 6 national championships and Iowa has won 0.

I would disregard your point and ask why you have not adequately answered my question.

See how dumb that logic is?

I have neither the time, nor the interest, nor the inclination to answer any of your dumb questions.:D

I already know the answers to all the important questions::p

1. most national championships...Gophers, 6-0

2. most recent Rose Bowl victor...Gophers (1960's vs. 1950's)

3. best record in head-to-head competition...Gophers, 59-42-2

4. preferred place to live, work, etc....Minnesota

5. better current head coach...oops, I guess I'll stop right there;)

Ferentz > Brewster...I don't think many on this board would disagree with you or myself on that one.

I'll use your logic again. Which team has won more Rose Bowl games, Iowa or Minnesota?

Annoying and lacking in context, I know.

Players make coaches much better or appear much better. Iowas has not been good forever and just because they have had recent success, does not make there present coach the best. In time, Brewster just may surpass Ferentz. The Gophers have gotten better every year Coach Brewster and his staff has been here even though the W-L record has not dramatically changed. Looking at the roster, it is foolish to suggest otherwise. So spare me with the Ferentz juice. It taste terrible (Charles Barkley pronouciation).

Well, during the Ferentz tenure to date. Iowa has bowl victories against Florida (outback), LSU (Capital One), South Carolina (outback), Texas Tech (Alamo) and Georgia Tech (orange). His bowl losses came against USC (orange), Florida (outback), and Texas (alamo). Not to mention, he has won big 10 coach of the year 3 times and shared the big10 title 2 times. 5 seasons with 9 wins or more. In Ferentz's 4th season at Iowa, the hawks went 8-0 in big10 play and appeared in the orange bowl. Adam Rittenberg ranked Iowa as the 2nd best team of the last decade behind Ohio State. Considering Minnesota has 0 big10 titles in 40+ years and one 10 win season I would be shocked to see Minnesota have the success this decade that Iowa had last decade.

Ferentz is 3-0 v. Tim Brewster.

This will be Brewster's year to really establish himself. Unfortunately, the schedule is difficult and Minnesota has 2 returners on defense and many question marks with regard to who will be the major offensive threat. If Brewster can match what Ferentz did in his 4th season, then I will gladly meet up with you, purchase you a beer or beverage of your choice and allow you to gloat endlessly at my expense.
