Is the Michigan beatdown a signature victory?

31% say no?!?! A trophy game we never win and we won it on the road. I could care less how bad Michigan is, we had a hand today in making them look terrible and are moving forward as a program. My vote is easily YES.

The question wasn't: Was it a great win....the question was: Is it a signature win. I don't think there is any Gopher fan that doesn't think the win today was a great win but it can certainly be debated as to whether it was a signature win.
 

Couldn't bring myself to vote yes. I honestly see this Michigan team going 5-7 this year.

Still an awesome win though.
 


In relative terms, it is a signature win. Given the name and history, plus our lack of recent success against them, beating Michigan is something that will get the Gophers and Jerry Kill a lot of attention at home and nationally. It may not quite be on the level of beating Penn State in 1999 when they were #2 or Ohio State in 2000 when they were #5, but it is still big. By the way, all three of those wins came away. Big as they were, a win of such magnitude at home would be an even bigger boost.
 

It's a really nice win, there is no doubt about that. However, a signiture win needs to signify the teams' arrival with the big boys. Michigan is not playing at that level right now. Knocking off OSU or a ranked WI team would qualify. This is a unique situation in that this is a game against a helmet school that has dominated us of recently, but is not playing to their historic level.
 

Not close...good brand but awful team (Michigan)...the last four games of the season will determine if this is a real breakout season - AKA signature season
 

We went up against a defense rated 9th nationally in rushing, with what most considered a one dimensional offense. Then we rushed at will. Michigan's offense might not be the best they've ever been, but their D is loaded with stellar athletes. A signature win (if you believe in those things) absolutely.
 




Very simple equation that I spelled out in another thread...win 3 of first 4 B1G games and this season becomes unlimited with possibilities (West Title, B1G Title, Top Bowl Game, Etc...if not, we are struggling into another mid-tier bowl game.

This was win 1 and it was awesome! Now we need to take the week to get healthy and win 2 of the next 3!

Then it sure is a signature win for you, and that's really all we can ask for as individuals.

I think it certainly is up there, but my personal favorite was Wisconsin 93' and Penn State when they were #2 (99?).
 

This is the 3rd time we've beaten Michigan in my lifetime. I'm 30. Whether Michigan is up or down, this IS a signature win.
 



Not a signature win, because Michigan is down, but also because I expect bigger wins this year!

Why is this even a question? If you were in the Metrodome in 2003, this can't possibly NOT be a signature win!

Absolutely, it is a FRICKIN signature win with many more to come for this program. 2 wins in 27 years against michigan and the 2003 collapse, how can it not be
a significant win. This is a significant win and will do wonders for the teams confidence, they now know they have it in them to be special and different.
That Jug means so damn much to the Gopher program, our guy's didn't just compete today they dished it back and then some.
This was not just a win against Michigan it was a thorough ASS kicking
of Michigan at the line of scrimmage. Gophers won the line of scrimmage and took Michigans will to win away.
Our guy's on both sides of the ball on offensive line and defensive line kicked those guys tails all over the football field. I cannot say enough about the toughness
of Zach Epping, he would not quit and he would not give in to them today, that is TRUE GRIT.

The linebackers played great, the secondary was opportunistic and provided blanket coverage and David Cobb was flat out a man possessed today.
Mitch Leidner, did'nt turn the ball over and he made plays.
Gophers kickers Ryan Santoso and Peter Mortell, they were huge difference makers in determining field possession and Michigan only started a drive one time
on our side of the 50 yard line today so you cannot say enough about the kicking game.
Max Williams one handed catch, that athleticism on display and his selling out to make that catch was awesome.
Williams was one of the first true elite players to stay home and play for Minnesota, the next in line will be Jeff Jones.
Guys like Seth Green, Carter Coughlin and Drayton Carlberg better take notice because, soon enough Minnesota is not just home
it will be a place you can develop, win football games and develop in to a Pro football level player. Many will not believe this but I went negative earlier in the week in hopes that the reverse psychology would work to make me believe they could win, these guy's have thick skins, they know how tough it is to win at Minnesota but these guys are turning that around.
These Gophers have turned the corner.
 

First off, the only thing that really matters is what it means to the PLAYERs. If they use it to propel them to a special kind of season, then I guess it would be "signature"?

I say it's a "statement win" for sure; signature win? I don't know for sure.

It's absolutely HUGE because of what it does for the season. Regardless of the team, talent, schedule, I've always defined a "good/great season" by winning the games you SHOULD and stealing one or two that you weren't expected to. 13-pt dogs, this falls into the latter category and therefore it puts this Gophers team one step closer to what could be a really good season.
 

What is this obsession we have around here in terms of labeling a win as a signature win? We did the same thing last year after the Nebraska game and had a similar debate wage back and forth. Why can't it just be a great win without trying to assign some more significant long term value to it? Signature, not signature, who gives a crap? We beat Michigan and got the Jug back, now let's see if maybe we can keep it around for more then 1 year.
 

When's that last time we had the Bell and the Jug at the same time?

Probably because our coach likes to use the term, or at least he has in the past.

It has never happened.

We won the Jug in 2005, but lost the Bell in Happy Valley just one game prior to that trip to Michigan. I imagine that the two of those items have never been photographed side-by-side. Would love to see that happen.
 

So many ungrateful, unappreciative, stupid people. Absolutely amazing. You'd think I was logged in reading the Michigan board. Four times in 43 years and you guys are not willing to say it is significant....amazing.

It would be like going on a date with Jessica Alba and complaining the whole night you thought she'd be prettier.

Again, no one is saying it wasn't a great win. The only debate is on the whole "signature" aspect of it and if it has any more far reaching meaning then just a great win for the team and the program this year. It is a significant win in the scope of this season and an important win in terms of trying to equal or better last years Big Ten win total. Beyond that it remains to be seen if the win has any program changing ramifications that would be implied with calling it a signature win.

This +1. Come on, people. Enjoy the moment! This is big, regardless of how Michigan plays the rest of the year.

If you were there, you still absolutely remember what it felt like. You'll never forget what it felt like. I can still recall with perfect clarity being stalled in jammed concourse on the way out of the Metrodome afterwards, while a knot of Michigan fans chanted about how proud they were to be Michigan Wolverines.

Any win over Michigan (and there have only been two since then), is a signature win, no matter how bad Michigan is.
