Sid: Tubby disappointed, but still wants to coach; "I always take the high road."

Some classy comments from Tubby, although he does channel his inner Denny Green in this interview:

“You stay in this business long enough and things like this happen,” said Smith, in his first and only interview since receiving the news Monday from Gophers athletic director Norwood Teague. “Oh no [I didn’t expect it]. I mean, why would I think something like this would happen?”

He added: “I always take the high road, know what I mean?”

Asked about his relationship with Teague, Smith replied: “Oh, I mean [it was] as good as you could have. He’d only been here a year.”

“Oh sure, by that time, sure you knew I knew,” he said. “I had an idea. But that’s neither here nor there. I appreciate the opportunity to spend time with you. I hope I’m still a close personal friend. We’ll talk again.”

Go Gophers!!

Throwing players under the bus is not taking the high road.

Tubby definitely never took the high road with his players. My personal favorite was his childish shots at Iverson when he transferred.
Sadly the 22 year old had to be the more mature man than the 60 year old.

Geeze. Guess that "thank you tubby" thread won't be around anytime soon.

I thought tubby was a good man. Don't know why folks need to take shots now? Whatever.

Some people still hate Tubby for some reason get over it every coach throws players under the bus.

Mine was ripping on Hoff after he moved him to pg.

"I hung around that basketball team more than some of the guys who made the decision to fire him, and until the facilities are greatly improved, a coach as talented as the late John Wooden, who won 10 national titles at UCLA, won’t be able to win here."

So Sid is implying that he knows more about the basketball team than Teague and Ellis. Pure Comedy.

6 years > 9 months?

I guess Sid thinks getting his bowl of
Ice cream at Williams equates to spending time with the team. I would have paid big money to see Teague throw him out of the press conference.

Good luck Tubby!

I'll be cheering for him wherever he goes.

I hope he gets a good job somewhere. I'm sure some middle of the pack major conference team will look at him.

Tubby will retire.

“I’m going to coach again. I’m going to take some time and think about what I want to do. That’s all I’m going to do,” said Smith, who turned down two job offers last season to stay at Minnesota because he and his wife, Donna, loved it here.

That doesn't prove anything other than Blake is smart enough to not burn bridges.

Let's say they end up hiring Sid's "close, personal friend" Flip. How long before the line changes from "not even John Wooden will win here" to "Flip will win here." 15 seconds?

Sid will stroke whomever can do something for him. He's stroking Tubby now because Sid harrassed Tubby into his first comments. He will stroke whomever the new coach is when he gets here. It is the circle of life with Sid.

I personally met Tubby and had a nice 15-20 minute conversation with him. He is a very nice guy and much more grounded then I expected for someone with such a high profile. I wish him nothing but the best of luck. However, I also believed it was time for a change in leadership at the helm.

I don't see a need to take shots at Tubby, nor do I see the need to make him some kind of martyr. I am glad that a coach with his credentials wanted to come here, I wish it would have worked out, it sucked that his firing was leaked before he was told (I hope some staffers lose their job for acting like 12 year old girls who just learned that Sally likes Johnny), but $2.5 million for not coaching next year seems like fair compensation for an unpleasant morning.
