Sid seems to think Knight may pull strings to get Tubby in Oregon

Tubby is winding down a career. Probably not interested in starting over once again. If he likes it in Minn, he'll likely stay. Only modest expectations in Minn, but more people each year will question the fire in his belly.

He has the same expectations (championships) at Minnesota as he has had anywhere else.

Perhaps. Perhaps not. One thing's certain: fan expectations are less here than at his last gig and that likely makes this fit more comfortable for Tubby.

No perhaps. Definitely no not. HIS goals are championships no matter where he coaches.

Well, taking into account that fans who expect to see the sun rise in the east and then set in the west expect less than the Kentucky crazies, practically anywhere else in the solar system would have been more comfortable. Having said that, I tend to think Tubby expects to succeed regardless of where he is.

I like the jotting section of Sid's column. Otherwise forget all the "close personal friends" and Bobby Knight is God crap.

"Dynamite drop in Monty. That broadcasting school is really paying off for ya..."

Gee, you just described every single coach of every single sport in every single country.

Sid doesn't know his ass from his elbow, he is about as sharp as a cotton ball at this point in his life. No chance Tubby goes to Oregon.

Are we really all that obsessed with Tubby staying anymore? Obviously I've loved what he has done and would prefer him to stay, but it's not like he's proven to be indispensable. If he were to leave, I feel he could be easily replaced. Not quite sure why Oregon would be so hot to take him, though. I mean he's a VERY classy man and a great teacher of the game, but I don't think he is the recruiting draw that he once was, and that is the end-all requirement for a basketball coach these days. Again, before you jump all over me, I don't want him to leave and would be very disappointed if he did, but it's not like he's taken us to the final four the last couple of years.

You have a point more from the standpoint of 'why is he on the top of everyone's list?' I think it's two things: A perception that Tubby couldn't possibly be happy at 'little Minnesota' and living in the 'frozen tundra', both of which I think are false. Second, he's sort of the ultimate 'safe choice.' Proven, classy, etc. If you're a booster who's pushing the AD for someone like Mark Few, and he says 'we're getting Tubby Smith' are you really going to be upset? He's sort of the ultimate 'unite the factions' weapon.

Respectfully disagree on this. Minny is a 2nd tier B10 program, and there is nothing to say we should have these results. If so then our last 15 years have been a major underacheivement. We have 2 NCAA bids (that count) since the early 90's. Please correct me if I am wrong, but I believe that is correct. Never even made the finals of the B10 tourney. IMO, if Tubby leaves it will be a major blow to the program.

In addition to the HS talent, there are no other D1 programs in the state. Those two facts alone indicate more success would be expected. No other B10 school is in a state with only 1 D1 hoops program.
