This is Sid, but he seems to think Tubby may indeed bolt to Oregon if the conditions are right. The more I think about it, the more concerned I get only cause our season next year depends on 3 young guys...Cory Joseph, Mbakwe, and Royce. If all 3 fail to materialize, it would be pretty depressing around very quickly. I think Tubby might see an out.

Oregon is expected to be looking for a new men's basketball coach -- Ernie Kent reportedly told Ducks players he is not returning after the Ducks finished eighth in the poor Pacific-10 this season -- and Knight is a big supporter of Tubby Smith. The Gophers coach says he hasn't been contacted about the Oregon job, is happy at Minnesota and is not interested in moving.

One person worried about losing Smith is Gophers athletic director Joel Maturi, who knows Knight could be involved in making Smith one of the highest paid coaches in the country if he decides Smith is the man for the job.

So stayed tuned. Anything could happen, although in a long conversation I had with Smith this week, he talked about all of the top talent being developed in this state and how good the future looks here.

But there are also a few things he doesn't exactly like here, and even though he is going to get his basketball practice facility, sometimes the dollars and better conditions to coach help somebody make a decision.

you almost can't blame him when maturi lets brewster discipline his own player, but insists on disciplining tubby's players for himself

I'm Not Sure If This Ever Happened Before

But Sid is mistaken.

ROTFLMAO

This has to be one of the dumbest "Sidisms" ever!

I just can't stop laughing.

:D

nailed it on the head

Ain't that the truth?! My god nothing makes me more angry. There is a simmering discontent with Maturi and it grows by the day.

If he goes, fine, good luck. if not, great.

Life is too short to have angst over NCAA coaches and possible jobs.

The UVa boosters while not as famous, surely had just as much money to spend as Phil Knight. If $3 million plus was not enough to get him away, I don't think money will do it. Oregon sucks right now and while it is true the Pac-10 is down, UCLA and Arizona will be back sooner then later, so the thought that he can go there and dominate is misguided.

The General should probably be more worried about pulling strings to make sure Pat doesn't get fired at Texas Tech.

That was 2005. UVa declined to offer $3 million. Tubby declined a lesser amount.

Wrong Knight. But that was myt initial thought too when I first saw the thread title.

My bad. I should probably pay more attention.

The St. John's job is now open as well. Can we get a "Tubby to the Big Apple" thread going ASAP?

That may be true, but I obviously wasn't referring to 2005. They DID offer him $3 million + last year (2009). Trust me.

The question is, can PK hold the Nike money for Tubby's next contract over his head?

Well if Tubby did think about bolting, I think Maturi's decisions will have played a big role. No one knows really if Tubby agrees with Maturi's rulings. He's said so in public, but you never really know behind the scenes.

Mbakwe has a felony charge. Few, if any schools would allow him to play.

Royce had a number of issues. He wasn't going to play until they were resolved.

Nolen dropped the ball on academics. He can't play per NCAA rules.

Tubby and Maturi are on the same page on all three of the above.

I couldn't agree more. No point in getting invested in any of these guys.

When you hire one of the top 10-15 coaches, others want to hire him, too.

Bill Self changed jobs. Roy Williams changed jobs. John Calipari changed jobs. Those are the top 3 active coaches.

Actually, there are plenty of examples of schools letting their players play despite facing felony charges. It may not be an ideal situation, but it's not uncommon. Mbakwe, from all accounts, has been a good student and not been in any trouble. He's appeared to have done everything right. No reason why he couldn't have played this season.

Even Bob Huggins wouldn't play a guy with felony charge outstanding. If he won't, nobody should.

Exactly. We are winding up year 3 of Tubby as coach and needing a semi-miracle run in the Big Ten tourney to just squeak into the tournament. Tubby leaving isn't ideal, but it isn't the end of the world. Maybe Maturi gets lucky and pulls the next Bo Ryan out of a small, no-name program.

Regardless who coaches Minnesota, the Gophers should have a steady run of 20+ W seasons and NCAA bids. Plenty of in-state talent and even more in surrounding areas.

Tubby leaving would be a disaster if only because of the players that would leave as well. I really don't think Mbakwe, Devoe and Ralph would stick around if Tubby left, and not to mention the incoming recruits. It would be a short term disaster. We'd look like Indiana for a few years for sure.

Respectfully disagree on this. Minny is a 2nd tier B10 program, and there is nothing to say we should have these results. If so then our last 15 years have been a major underacheivement. We have 2 NCAA bids (that count) since the early 90's. Please correct me if I am wrong, but I believe that is correct. Never even made the finals of the B10 tourney. IMO, if Tubby leaves it will be a major blow to the program.

Sid thinks the Kaiser is conspiring to make his oatmeal lumpy.

Tubby is winding down a career. Probably not interested in starting over once again. If he likes it in Minn, he'll likely stay. Only modest expectations in Minn, but more people each year will question the fire in his belly.

This is only accurate if you're being puritanical and eliminating all of the 'banned' years. Sometimes your 'badger' really shows through.

Edit, I guess you did qualify it. In any case, we are not in the top 3, but we can certainly be in the top 5 programs in the conference on a regular basis if we simply keep Tubby here and start getting (and enrolling) the recruits that Monson usually wiffed on. Losing Tubby would surely set the process make 2-3 years though.
