"Apparently, one of the television networks has checked with the Gophers football team on opening the season next year at Middle Tennessee State on a Thursday night. ESPN televises a game nearly every week on Thursday nights. ..."

Not sure if this has been posted.

It would be exciting to have a Thursday night game but also embarrassing to show the nation we have to play AT middle Tennessee. No such thing as bad publicity though, if it happens.

The Gophers have done this several times in the last few years, including at Tulsa and at Toledo.

NC Schedules (again...)

Why do people continually make fun of Sid? He's 85 years old or something and still knows more about sports in MN than anyone on here...Yes, he has his moments, but everytime someone brings him up its instant badgering of the ol' guy. Give the guy a break, he's a MN sports icon. I for one still look forward to his columns and enjoy listening to him chew people out on Sunday mornings :)

Did anybody else hear the rumor that we're playing USC next year, too?

I can't wait for 2012. Opening in Vegas as defending National Champions is going to be so sweet.

Why do people continually make fun of Sid?

Because Sid reported something today - November 13th, 2009 - as some sort of new news. When, in fact, this was known since September 3 when the schedule updates were announced. This has ALWAYS been a Thursday night, from the very beginning. There is no new news here. But, Sid reports it as if he's breaking some story.

In the old days, Sid broke all kinds of stuff. Today, he's normally a day late (or in this case two and a half months late). Being late isn't a huge problem, but his growing problem these days is that he is getting a lot of stuff flat out wrong, too, which is never good for a newspaper.

I disagree--greatly. He maybe "knows" more people than most sports writers, but knows little about sports anymore. He has not identified a Gopher player correctly on the Brew part of the show more than a couple of times this year. He doesn't know the difference between Decker and Weber; Bennett or Eskridge or Whaley. He has not broken an actual news story since Lou Holtz. His quotes are from the television, his stories are pulled from other internet stories. If he was anyone else, he would be fired for plagarism. He's only an icon for his longevity and his quirks, not his content. His column has not been relevant for years. His heyday was gone 20 years ago.

The news isn't that the game is on Thursday, it's that it might be NATIONALLY TELEVISED. Sid's senile, but your stretching to fault him for this one.

No, here is word-for-word what Sid said:

"Apparently, one of the television networks has checked with the Gophers football team on opening the season next year at Middle Tennessee State on a Thursday night."

That infers that the news is that the network is checking to see if they will move the game to a Thursday.

In any case, if the news was that it might be televised, then he would have been wise to word it something along the lines of "next year's Thursday night game at MTSU could be nationally televised."

He made it sound like they've inquired about moving the date. They haven't.

Start looking for a bar or pick up the sports package....smells like ESPNU.

well, we can all thank the g.d. minnesota state fair (of all things) for the fact that we have to open the season on the road for at least a couple more years. we just can't have a game during the mn state fair because we have to make sure a bunch of over-weight rubes can park their cars in the gophers football lots before they go stuff their face at the far with fried crap that just happens to be on a stick.

espnu is no longer on the sports tier package. it is now a regular channel on comcast digital cable and i would assume directv/dishnetwork as well.

that being said. i think this would be on either espn or espn2 and not espnu.

This year, ESPN had South Carolina at NC State and Oregon at Boise State on the first Thursday of the season. ESPNU carried North Texas at Ball State.

In summary, Minnesota/Middle Tennessee will be on the U, if televised.

Start looking for a bar or pick up the sports package....smells like ESPNU.

Here was the schedule for this year's first night games (televised games in BOLD):
Thu. 9/3 South Carolina at NC State 7:00 ESPN
Thu. 9/3 Troy at Bowling Green 7:00
Thu. 9/3 Villanova at Temple 7:00
Thu. 9/3 Coastal Carolina at Kent State 7:00
Thu. 9/3 North Texas at Ball State 7:30 ESPNU
Thu. 9/3 North Dakota State at Iowa State 8:00
Thu. 9/3 Eastern Kentucky at Indiana 8:00 BTN
Thu. 9/3 Utah State at Utah 9:00 MTN
Thu. 9/3 Oregon at Boise State 10:15 ESPN

Where we end up will depend on the other opening night matchups. But I agree, I see this as a likely ESPNU game if there are two or more Thus games featuring 2 BCS schools or a BCS versus a BCS buster (like Boise, TCU, or Utah). If they put a game on the Deuce next year then we could end up there...there was no such game this season.

The "home-and-home series" with a Sunbelt opponent people in Minnesota have no interest in, where the Big Ten team plays on the road and the Sun Belt team may (or may not) return the trip within the next decade, is the most confusing deal I have ever seen the U enter into. Not sure what the reason for this could be.

Uh oh, our 2012 NC schedule is looking soft, unless we can get a big name opponent or Syracuse improves.
