Sid: Horton deserves job but likely won't get it

Sid is a nice guy but let's his heart get in the way of his brain.

"Why would somebody like Brady Hoke of San Diego State (which beat UNLV 48-14 on Saturday), who did a good job at Ball State and has had one winning season at his new school, be better than Horton, who knows the personnel here and is an experienced Big Ten coach? And players such as outgoing quarterback Adam Weber and future quarterback MarQueis Gray have come out in favor of Horton being hired. They love and respect the man and want to keep on playing for the same staff. A lack of consistency has been one reason the program has struggled."

Doesn't sound so crazy to me.

Thank god we have Maturi (et al) making the decision and not Sid.

The last time we let the players make the decision, we got Gutekunst instead of Bobby Ross. Gutey's a great guy, but. . . .

I was going to say exactly the same thing.

Not going to repeat that history again.

but.... he didn't win a national championship at minnesota like ross did at georgia tech. players don't get to pick the coach period!!!!

I suspect the boosters/Maturi/people who make the decisions (or at least I hope) know better than we do. If they don't think Horton is a rebuilding, take us back to respectability type coach who will put us back on the map, I trust them.

Horton did a great job today leading the gophers to a win today against Iowa to bring Floyd back to home. In fact, he has been the definition of class through out this whole situation. However, lets look at the big picture here: He finishes his reign as interim coach 2-3 and before beating Illinois he had a personal 19 game losing streak as a head coach. Sure he would probably do a better job than Brewster but, I hope, that isn't the goal.

Hiring Horton as the head coach would prove that the administrations goal is mediocrity. I could see Horton getting the gophers 5-7 wins some years, going to a couple bowls and being average.

Its time the administration drops the inferiority complex and raises the bar and goes out to find a coach that turns 8-9 win seasons into the norm and occasionally wins in the double digits.

If the new HC wants to hire Horton to be the OC thats fine with me. I don't think we have seen Horton's true personality as a playcaller since everything he was doing this year was to satisfy Brewster's "Pound the Rock" mantra.

Sid deserves his walking papers from newsmedia (about 15 years ago) but likely won't get them
