Sid hints at Bryant Allen not playing hoops anymore

I'd like to see BA on the court in a month, I guess we will stay tuned.

Next lines:
Five high school basketball recruits -- Ian Theisen of Osseo, Reid Travis of DeLaSalle, Sam Mader of Appleton East in Wisconsin, and Joe Coleman and Jake Wright of Hopkins -- visited the University of Minnesota campus on Saturday.

This is good for the football team. He has the potential to be a pretty solid slot receiver if he concentrates on it. Doesn't really bring more than garbage minutes to the basketball team (especially with Nolen back).

It wouldn't be garbage minutes this season, could be splitting back up pg minutes allowing Devoe to see more time at both sg and pg.

If Devoe is playing SG, they are going to be having Nolen play the point. Allen would not get important minutes this season. He simply is not good enough. If Allen played, Maverick would be more likely to get significant minutes than Allen.

Marcus Fuller says the opposite-

GophersNow Talked to Bryant Allen after practice. He's looking forward to playing hoops this season. Obvsly he'll joining Tubby earlier this time.

When I saw the first report I thought it might be a numbers thing. Tubby already has 15 guys on the roster not counting Bryant. I do notice that Bryant is still listed on the Gophersports.com web site. With the additions of Maverick and Armelin this season, it will be interesting to see if Allen is in the mix after the football season.

I don't agree with that at all, Allen was a Mr. Basketball (Show-me) Finalist in St. Louis. Tubby praised Allen's abilities multiple times last year. I think the extra month of practice and inclusion in the nonconference season will give him some valuable PT to contribute some PG minutes.

I also thing he is a good "glue" guy, he was always into the games and off the bench to congratulate players.

I think you're underestimating Allen. Time will tell, he should be joining the team in a few weeks.

HIGH SCHOOL:
A graduate of Maplewood-Richmond Heights High School...averaged 25.1 points, 3.5 rebounds, 3.9 assists and 4.1 steals per game as a senior... shot 54.7% from the field, 51% from three-point range and 83.5% from the line... ranked as the No. 37 point guard in the nation by ESPN.com and Scouts, Inc...was a finalist for Mr. Show Me basketball award...led his team to back-to-back state championships... scored 25 points in that state title game, including the game-winning layup with four seconds left after his team trailed by 19 points earlier in the contest...finished his career with 2,632 points...holds the Missouri State record for career steals with 527...also won a state track championship in the 300-meter hurdles in 2006...finished high school with 12 varsity letters.

I think there is a good opportunity for him to compete with Maverick for back-up PG minutes...

just judging on highlight videos, BA can hit from deep pretty well. I'm glad he's playing basketball this year again, let's see how it shakes out. He was always really animated on the bench last year and those kind of guys are usually good for the team.

To be honest, I expect him to contribute this year. The skill set is there, and now with the extra time, I think he'll bring more to the table. And this would suck football wise, but I wouldn't necessarily anticipate a bowl game next season either, so he'll probably be around then as well. I'm interested in seeing how he develops this season.

Where does Sid come up with this stuff?

Clipped:
"I'm giving it another shot this year," Allen said after Wednesday's practice. "Last year was a good experience. Now, I'm going to play again, and hopefully get in there a little more and bring some spark to the team."

A Maplewood, Mo. native, Allen was a more highly recruited basketball player out of high school than Gophers freshman guard Maverick Ahanmisi. Allen is also a great defender, so I think he should have an opportunity to help Tubby a lot more this season if he gets into basketball condition quickly.

I love the football team, but why would you not play b-ball with this team? seams like a no brainer to do both.

Once Allen get up to speed basketball wise, I expect him to get more miniutes than Maverick.

I know he can't do it but it may be more beneficial for Gopher sports as a whole if Allen started practicing with the BBall team now. The FB team is going nowhere and he could be an important part of the bball team

Move Stoudemire back to the slot? :)

I would be shocked if Allen does anything other than be an energy guy and play garbage minutes. But every team needs a garbage time guy, heck, Hosea is one of the all time most well known gophers.
I personally think Allen would be better served in terms of having athletic success by focusing on football. But if he really enjoys it he should go ahead and do it. If people are expecting him to be a contributor, I am afraid they will be mistaken.

What makes you think Maverick has more potential at PG than Allen? Their high school careers and corresponding college recruiting interest were completely different.

Did you really just compare the Missouri runner up for Mr Basketball, 2x state Chanmpion & leading scorer in the state B Allen to walk-on Hosea Crittendon?

I'd think after a horrible football season like he just endured he be chomping at the bit to play with a winning team, one who might even make some noise this year.

Words From the Pre-season Game

According to the announcers, Travis Busch and his equally dull partner, both stated that Allen will be joining the team later this year. Again, Sid's blatant disregard for quality journalism led him down a path of pure speculation instead of covering the facts.

Sid is pure comedy...the guy is borderline senile at this point...however, I hate when people rip on him. I mean, what do you expect? He has no clue what is going on. However he's an institution. Nowadays, listening to him talk about sports, his generic column, the way he sloppily eats BBQ sandwiches in the press box, the guy is unintentional comedic gold. He's old as hell, its impressive that he's even still going.

Let's all just appreciate him for what he is and never take anything he ever says seriously.

From Myron at FBT:
•Bryant Allen is prepping again for double intercollegiate athlete duty and will get the chance to join Tubby’s squad early — no need for bowl preparation to get in the way!

“I’m giving it another shot this year. Last year was a good experience. Now, I’m going to play again, and hopefully get in there a little more and bring some spark to the team.”

The positive here for BA is he’ll likely will get more playing time this season, since the Gophers will be on the positive end of blowouts more this season than 2009-2010. I won’t be able to sleep until Allen hits another 3 and doesn’t call bank.

I still think it will be difficult for Allen to get much playing time in basketball because he will be significantly behind the others in practice time by the time he joins the team after football is over. After watching Maverick play this summer, I would have guessed Allen would have the upper hand. I was very pleasantly surprised by Maverick's play in the first exhibition game. His improvement from the summer is certainly positive. I do think Allen could have been a significant contributor to the basketball team if he would have focused on basketball full time.

I talked to the coaches about Allen today and they said that it is still up in the air. The final football game is November 27th against Iowa. The Gophers are pretty deep at guard with Nolan, Hoffarber, Joseph, Maverick, Chip and Hollins, so I'm not sure how much playing time would be available for Allen

Pretty much what they said last year, too.

Hollins will play mostly 3, not much 2.

Deep at PG? Hoff, Chip and Hollins are not point guards. Joseph is best served at SG, but proved he can play both, thats not very deep to me.

I don't see why he couldn't compete for some minutes with Maverick.

Never believe what Sid says

If Sid says that Allen won't be back to play this year, that usually means there's a 100% chance he will be back. Sid is the same guy who told us Brewster would not be fired and he is the same guy that told us Moss would not be back to play for the Vikings.

On another note, Allen is much more that a garbage player. The comparison to Hosea isn't a good one.
