U offensive line woes

The Vikings are not the only football team in town with an offensive line problem.

“We’ve been having musical chairs at guard,” Gophers coach Jerry Kill said. “We have been all right at the other spots, but the guard has been the problem. Joe Bjorklund started there last week for Foster Bush, and Joe did a good job. Right now Foster Bush is still questionable with a concussion. Connor Mayes, who is a true freshman, we played him just a little bit because we felt we needed to because we have so many injuries up there at offensive guard.

“Zac Epping, with his high ankle sprain, he came out of [the Northwestern] game pretty good. But we have a lack of depth there right now, so right now going into this week, Joe Bjorklund is starting. I think you realize how that offensive line is, you have to have continuity up there and we’re still trying to find that.”

So depth is an issue?

“We’re running out of depth, which is why we had to pull that redshirt off of Connor Mayes,” Kill said. “Depth is a concern right now both in the offensive and defensive line. The freshman have stepped up in the defensive line and now Connor is going to have to step up in the offensive line.”

Go Gophers!!

Is Isaac Hayes hurt or has Connor Mayes just completely passed him on the depth chart?

And Hayes has been underwhelming at RG. A couple games back an injured Bjorklund had to relieve a healthy Hayes at RG because he wasn't getting it done.

A couple of games back? Things can change in a couple of games.

That's a bummer. I thought Hayes was suppose to be a pretty decent OL. He was a top 150 recruit I thought.

The trend at the U seems to be that 4* recruits are a guaranteed bust. That isn't even taking Hayes into account as he still has time to develop into a contributor.

The last 4* you could argue that panned out was Michael Carter and we only got 1 year out of him. Notable busts going back to 2008 include: Harbison, McDonald, Gjere, Lamonte Edwards, Hayo Carpenter, Hasan Lipscomb, Brandon Green, Vince Hill II, Sam Marish, Tim McGee, David Pittman, Rex Sharpe.

The only ones that started their senior year were Michael Carter, Keanon Cooper, and Marqueis Gray, and Traye Simmons.

Kill is still looking for his first successful 4*. Its safe to say that if it's a highly touted recruit, he won't pan out here. Hopefully Jeff Jones bucks the trend.

Traye Simmons was not a bust at all.

I don't think Gjere was a bust, just a victim of tough luck.

I always felt bad for Brandon Green. I think he was talented, just couldn't ever stay healthy.

I wasn't really trying to call out everyone who didn't live up to expectations. Just trying to point out the U's poor track record of developing "elite" talent. And how a 4* commitment is still far from a guarantee that they'll be a regular contributor.

It's probably partly due to bad luck, but I think it's more than just a coincidence that 75% of our 4 star recruits never pan out.

Ummm.... Okay...

Recruits don't pan out. It's a fact of life. Good grief, we know more about NFL First Round draft picks than we do 17-yr old HS kids and a LARGE percentage of NFL First Rounders "never pan out".

But I guess in THIS particular case, it's the fact that the program "isn't developing elite talent". For all the other programs in FBS, they're clicking all all cylinders with their 4 and 5-star guys! Woo hoo!!!!

Name another program that misses on 75% of their 4 and 5 star recruits.

What do you call a GM that botches 3 out 4 first round draft picks? Unemployed.
