Tubby Smith: I'm not going anywhere

The Gophers coach refutes rumors of his leaving and is confident his team will finish the season strong.

Tubby Smith hasn't lost confidence in his basketball team even though the Gophers have a 1-8 record in the past nine games and are 6-11 in the Big Ten and 17-12 overall.

Smith is confident the Gophers will beat Penn State on Sunday, do well in the Big Ten tournament next week in Indianapolis and then get a berth in the NCAA tournament.

And Smith rejected the ESPN rumor that Georgia Tech was going to buy out coach Paul Hewitt's contract and hire Smith by saying: "Why would I be interested in that job? I'm not going anywhere. My wife likes it here, I like it here, and I'm going to finish my career here."

A year ago the Gophers were slumping at the end of the season, going 4-4 in their final eight Big Ten conference games, but Smith points out they went to the finals of the Big Ten tournament before losing to Ohio State, which helped them secure a birth in the NCAA tournament.

And Smith is confident about the future of his team. The Gophers will lose only two seniors after this season, Blake Hoffarber and Al Nolen. They have two good redshirt freshmen in Elliott Eliason and Oto Osenieks. Maurice Walker will return after knee surgery this past season, and so will three freshmen who got good experience this year -- Maverick Anhanmisi, Chip Armelin and Austin Hollins. And a good recruiting class is expected with the already signed Joe Coleman and Andre Hollins and two scholarships still available.

The one player who might not be back is Ralph Sampson III, whose father, Ralph Sampson, is reported to be talking about his son making himself available to the NBA even though most scouts don't believe the 6-11 center is close to having developed enough to play in the big time.

Smith is not concerned about Trevor Mbakwe turning pro because the former Henry Sibley star agrees with his coach that he's not ready. The fact that he was idle last year didn't allow him to reach his top form this season. But next year will be a different story after playing a full season this year.

Smith added that had Mbakwe made some of the easy baskets this year that he would normally make, the Gophers would not have lost to Penn State, Michigan State, Michigan and Northwestern when they had good leads. Mbakwe will make those shots next season.

Speaking about this team, Smith said the Gophers lost some of their toughness when Devoe Joseph transferred to Oregon and Nolen was lost to a broken foot. Smith said he talked to Nolen's doctor the other day and the report he got is that there is a slight possibility that the outstanding point guard could be available for the Big Ten tournament next week.

And looking back to his first year of recruiting, Smith said the one regret he had was that he didn't try to get potential All-America guard Jordan Taylor of Wisconsin to change his commitment and come to Minnesota.

With Taylor in the Gophers lineup, rest assured the Badgers would be a lot less potent and the Gophers would have won a lot more games.

"We had Nolen coming in at the time, and I didn't want to recruit another guard," Smith said about the Taylor situation.

I thought there was one scholarship available - Devoe's. Is Sid counting Ralph's scholarship in the two or have I lost count?

Yes, that is how I read it.

I suspect the "second" scholarship will more likely come from Trevor leaving and Ralph will stay.

Time will tell.
 

This is all good if true. But I wonder how much of it Tubby said to Sid and how much Sid imagined as he was waking up his choo choo alarm clock this morning. No offense to Sid, but he's slipped a lot in the last 6 months. The time is getting near.
 




A lot of this is really great news, I just wish I could believe it. If Tubby is committed to Minnesota long term and Trevor is staying for his Senior year, those are two very positive developments. I tend to believe Johnny (and others) who believe Trevor will turn pro.
 

I'm telling you guys, it's gonna be either Rodney or Ralph that goes pro. People are assuming it's Trevor, but he'll be back. It's one of those two guys who'll go.
 


There's also the chance of a transfer or Tubby telling someone (hopefully Mav) to take a hike.
 



Gotta believe Trevor would be better off staying and working on his game more to prepare him for the draft. As for Sampson, not trying to be insulting but I just don't think he has the heart to walk in dad's shoes.

From what Ive seen, Ralph just isnt a good enough ball handler to play an outside shooting 4...and is toooooooooooooooo weak to play inside. He can use another year in college.
 


Well, Souhan said Tubby would be gone and Sid says he will stay. It will be fun to see who's full of BS and who's not. I'm guessing Souhan was/is clueless.

I don't get the sudden supposed influence of daddy here. All accounts I've heard are that RSIII generally wants nothing to do with him, or at least it was that way until very recently.
 

Does Ralph seriously think that he can make in the NBA? I mean, I think he's shown some nice developments this year with improved outside shooting, but really, the NBA? I'm sorry, but there really is no chance at this point in his career. I'm hoping this is more to do with testing the waters than actual intention of declaring.

Daniel Orton averaged 3 ppg in 10 minutes (per) at UK last season. He got drafted in 1st round.

It only takes one team to like you enough to get drafted (even in 2nd round).
 

RS3

I like RS3.

He seems like a solid kid and a good teammate. He has been a great Gopher. I hope he stays and graduates before he goes pro. That being said I believe the chances of RS3 being on an NBA roster next year are ZERO.

I think they will both look a little, but I hope both will stay. The NBA needs a new CBA before next season, so who even knows when the season will start. Some think it might not be until after the New Year. There is no question that Mbakwe is a WAYYYYYYY better player for the Gophers, but in the NBA he is an undersized PF who can't shoot. Sampson can shoot a little, is the right size for a PF, fairly athletic, but is really soft. Personally, I don't think either of them would be drafted in the first round, both would have problems making an NBA roster, and both should stay in school. I'm not an NBA scout, but because of the size difference and shooting ability, it wouldn't shock me if some NBA teams felt that Sampson III potentially had a higher ceiling than Mbakwe in the NBA. A lot of the NBA draft is about potential, because neither one of those guys is going to be able to help an NBA team much next season.

Sid got the information from Tubby.

Myron got his information from halfway down his backside.
 

I think FOT is right about where each is getting their information from. Sid can't remember anyones name, but he knew Julien Welch's name last week very well. There was only one person he was getting that name from. I didn't listen to his show this week, but he also seemed pretty confident that Mbakwe would be back next season. Could he have gotten bad information? Yes, but my guess is that Tubby feels that Mbakwe is coming back for his senior year.
 

I think Ralph can be a decent role player at the next level with his jumpers developing. He may not be in the mold of great inside player. Nevertheless, if he makes the shots with consistency, Ralph may have a better shot at the NBA than TM.
 

The thing about Sid is that he sometimes hears what he wants to hear.

Also, it's also very possible that both Sid and Myron are correct on Trevor. He may stay, but he also might explore his options. Considering he's a junior, it wouldn't be at all surprising if he declares to get a sense as to his value and then pulls his name out.

After all, he plays for a coach who suggested that Spencer Tollackson and Dan Coleman declare after their junior years in order to get feedback from NBA types.
