Wow...Sid's column is interesting...frightening...disturbing...all at the same time;
It makes one appreciate what a fine job Interim Head Coach Horton did at the end of last season to pull out victories against Illinois and Iowa.
It also makes one wonder whether Glen Mason can be blamed for the current state of the program
He's only been gone since 2006.
Obviously, Brewster did a great job stocking the cupboard during the previous 4 years
...Kill didn't inherit a very good team, and with an opening game at powerful Southern California this fall, the new coach is doing everything possible to improve his players.
"I think we have to teach them what we expect in practice when we get into the fall. I think it's baby steps," Kill said....
Upon his first look at his team in workouts, Kill and his staff were disappointed in what they saw. No doubt this team isn't as talented as it needs to be...
GiP, +1, IMO, that is exactly what Kill is doing.

There is good news on the Gophers football front from an academic standpoint in that defensive tackle Ra'Shede Hageman and cornerback Michael Carter, who were not allowed to play at the end of the season so they could focus on their studies, have shown great improvement in the classroom.
This Gopher Team has more talent then the teams Coach Kill had at Northern.
I believe his comments need to be taken in context. He is stating what is needed on a Big Ten Level
This is not a team without talent.
Not according to the score of last years game between the two.![]()
Kill is doing a great job at managing fan expectations and in the same breathe...telling his players that we are not good enough yet. Keep working.
Plus, we need to take his statements about conditioning in context...his staff has a refined approach to player development and they know what they want...it would make sense that the players aren't up to thier standard...its new to everyone.
I don't think for a minute that Kill is saying all the players are fat, lazy and out of shape...I think he is saying they aren't fast and strong to their system and standards and have a lot of work to do to get their.
We have talent returning on this team and we also have holes to fill...most importantly, we have a staff with a system and players know that for the next 4 years (and hopefully longer) they will be playing in that system.
I'm not sure why everyone is so shocked at Kill's comments. Obviously the results on the field have shown us that something isn't quite right with our program. It's not like the team underperformed for some magical reason due to Brewster's incompetence. Of course we need to improve...that's why we had a coaching change. I'd be concerned if Kill was impressed with the team at this point.
I disagree. The cupboard isn't bare. It was just dirty and unorganized. Even fine china won't look good if its not polished. Kill is trying to polish it up as we speak.
The players have the skill necessary to be competitive they just need to be prepared properly.
Brewster was given the keys and he didn't know how to drive. That's why he was fired. Hopefully, Kill can drive but first he needs to rebuild the engine that Brewster blew up.
If you need an example of needing more than talent to win games look at the Ole Miss transition from Ed Oregeron to Houston Nutt. Oregeron got some damn good ball players to Ole Miss but had no clue how to prepare them. Houston Nutt came in and led Oregerons recruits to some pretty solid years.

Those victories at the end of the season were not done with smoke and mirrors. Especially during the Iowa game the Gophers dominated their opponents physically on both sides of the ball. This Gopher team is not anywhere near as bad or out of shape as some would like us to believe.
100% agreed. I think the cupboard is far from empty & many key players had the light go on near the end of the season. Kill is just Lou Holtz'ing us fans & trying to motivate the players, imo. No doubt they have work to do, especially in the class room but I don't see this as a rebuilding project.
I'm beginning to love Kill. I've always supported him, but everytime I hear / read something on him.. It's like the time I first met my wife all over again.
Mmmmmm.. Lovin' Killer..
I think you are right, he is mostly disappointed in the development of the talent and the speed on the squad on the defense. If you take his point that his whole defense is predicated on the ability of two good speed rushing DEs then he has to think he has some problems with the development of the DEs. However, I think Claeys philosophy of attacking with his Dlinemen, also helps all of the DL players emphasize the speed they do have, as opposed to what we have done the last two years.
So does our defensive strategy no longer consist of players getting "their dadgum chili hot"?
