Great rivalry

The Northwestern-Minnesota football rivalry goes back to some great matchups during the Gophers’ championship years in the late ’30s and early ’40s, when the Gophers were coached by Bernie Bierman and the Wildcats were coached by Pappy Waldorf. And it could resume again Saturday when the two teams meet at TCF Bank Stadium in a crucial game for both teams.

In 1935, when the Gophers won their second national title and finished 8-0, they had one of their stiffest contests of the season at home against the Wildcats when they won 21-13. The next season, while the Gophers won their third national title, the Wildcats certainly had a claim to the No. 1 spot after they beat the Gophers 6-0 in Evanston, Ill., and handed them their lone loss of the season.

Northwestern would go on to lose 26-6 to Notre Dame in its final game of the year, the Wildcats’ only loss, and the Gophers won the national title even though they didn’t win the Big Ten championship.

In 1938 the Gophers were undefeated and ranked No. 2 in the country when they traveled to Evanston to face No. 12 Northwestern. The Gophers lost 6-3, but they would go on to win the Big Ten title with a 4-1 record. The Gophers won the 1940 and 1941 national titles, but Northwestern pushed them to the limit in both season as the Gophers won 13-12 in 1940 and 8-7 in 1941.

Go Gophers!!

Coaches had awesome names back then.

I think Sid attended some of those games with his first grandson.

When pondering great college football rivalries, Northwestern-Minnesota immediately comes to my mind.

Aging stinks…the fact that Sid is doing what he is doing in his 90's should be saluted instead of constantly ridiculed. Most of us will be 6 feet under or in a nursing home wetting our pants at that age. Making fun of an older person is like picking on 5 year olds. Personally I admire him for continuing to do what he does and I enjoy his unique perspective, having been around to see those championship teams. So hats off to him.

Isn't sheltering an old person from criticism the same thing as infantilizing them? If he wants to be working, especially in such a public and well-compensated position, he deserves the same level of criticism as anyone else, regardless of his age. If he wants all of the benefits and none of the drawbacks, he should retire.

Well typed.

I'm up in age, and I have no problem with people picking on me for my age. It does not equate to picking on a 5-year old. An older person that has half a mind learns to laugh with the jokes. Personally, the day they start teasing me about my age is the day I really am old. Old Fartness is not a number it's an attitude.

A journalist would have been fired a long time ago for the poor fact-checking and non-sensical comments/questions he makes at press conferences if they hadn't been around forever like Sid has. That's fine, you can make a fair argument that a long, successful career has earned him the latitude he gets. However, as dpod points out, its a public and well-compensated position, so if he gets to reap the benefits of his longevity, he certainly should not be above jokes/criticism based on that same longevity.

Also, I might be wrong about termination of sports media figures for poor fact-checking. Beth Mowins and Joey Galloway get to keep doing what they do despite a strong track record of on air inaccuracies and misnamed teams/players.

Or like when the ABC guy said this was "one of the biggest wins in the history of the program" after we beat a terrible Michigan team.

Gophers and NW - a few fun facts:
All-time series Gophers 51-33-5. Average Scores MN 21.9-NW 17.0
NW has won 5 of last 7 meetings. MN won 2013 20-17. Prior to that, last MN victory 2009 35-24.
Some memorable games: 2007: NW 49-48 OT 2002: MN 45-42. 2000: NW 41-35.
From 1975 to 1993, MN led series 13-3-1.

I'll never forget that 2000 game at the Dome. Hail Mary to win it for NU.

The Dome loss to Northwestern when the Gophers were 7-1 started the Brewster crash & burn.

Disagree completely. Who, in their right mind, wants to be working in their 90's? If I make it to 90, I'd like it to be smack in the middle of my 4th decade being retired.

Was at that one with my son. We looked stunned at each other and it took 10 minutes to recover. I recall the guy caught the TD, gave the ball to the ref and it felt like the entire Northwestern team just headed for the exits. They very well may have been on the bus to the airport by the time I left the building.

When I attended the game where they returned an interception at the end of the game to beat us, I was no longer stunned. Granted that was in a dark period for even Gopher fans.

With all these good memories, I'm going to go watch that blocked field goal on youtube again...

Keep Sid - he is the true oracle. Dump Souhan.
