Sid: Andre McDonald no longer in school; could go to JUCO

I'm just happy to see that everyone knows so much about Andre McDonald that they are able to make a judgment about him. I would have never guessed. Anyone know what he had for breakfast?

For a variety of reasons, some kids just aren't prepared for or cut out for college. It has nothing to do with intelligence. It's too bad that he's not taking advantage of this opportunity because it will likely only come around once for him and it marks a chance for him to break out on a number of levels. I hope he can turn it around and get himself in a position where he can use his athletic gifts if that's what he truly wants to do.

I can't say much about Hooch use by the Gopher team during the Warmath and Stoll eras, but I can attest to the fact that a lot of the team belonged to Phi Tappa Kegga.

10 times seems way out of line but unless Pizza Hut employees are suddenly getting a lot of hamstring pulls, concussions, knee injuries and broken bones "as" might by just as unreasonable.

Unless there has been a rash of "crawling into the oven" incidents that haven't come to light.

While most regular students don't have to endure the injuries that student athletes endure, most professors aren't required to bend over backwards for regular students like they are for student athletes.

From what I have read McDonald comes from a toxic family - they essentially abandoned him in high school and moved to Florida. He moved in with a neighbor lady who became his de facto guardian. About the time he started college his family moved back. It appears they haven't provided him with good advice and guidance.

Maybe we could all just cut him some slack and pray that he can somehow get his life together.

Playing football and going to school is 10 times more demanding compared to going to school and working 25 hours at Pizza Hut. It's obvious you have never worked around a college athletic program or played a college sport. Drives me nuts how people think these guys just go to class and then have a 2 hour practice and that's all they do in a day.

10 times harder? I highly doubt that. I had a roommate that was pre-med and on the football team. He had more free time then I did, working thru college. Remember, they get the pick of classes, so they have the ultimate schedule. Then they lift in the morning, and practice for a few hours in the afternoon. Their "job" is football, and it takes less hours then I worked. And they get paid a helluva lot more. (tuition, room and board)

Thank you. We all come from different circumstances, but let's get together and hope this guy puts his life on the right track.

this must just mean that our athletic department is better at shuffling them through instead of these athletes taking advantage of their educational opportunities. professors just bending over backwards, easier work and intro classes...

Let's keep the subject about football athletes. One of the best wrestlers in the country is majoring in mechanical engineering at the U. That impresses me.

I love the football players and I know they work hard, but academically, they do not impress me one bit.

Getting a D and rupturing your spleen against failing ? Not the same is it? Helping to bring-in millions of dollars of revenue by risking bodily injury for a scholarship or having to get a regular job to stay in school?

Probably among the many that had to do the latter. Knew some guys who played football, not well but still. Not in my wildest dreams or on a drunken stupor night did I think that I was the one who had the rougher deal. Don't know your experiences, can't speak to them.

Just saying that while we've all probably known people who "threw away opportunities" and read about many, many more that did. Also know that there are many reasons for what they did, some reasonable, some sad some idiotic. It's just that saying that getting a job in retail is just as tough as being a college football player is an argument that, on it's surface, is hard to support.

So, Jon Christenson, biochemistry major who plans to get his MD and MPH? While beginning as a walk-on and starting/earning a scholly by year 2/3? Not impressed at all, eh?

You are really good at finding the exceptions to the rule.

How about we start with the players that announce their names and majors on the big screen on Saturday? Why are 75% of them marketing majors? Is that a growing field? Are 18 year old kids really passionate about marketing? Man, I hadn't heard about the hidden gem of a career that is marketing. Wish someone would have told me that. Football players must have access to some data that we don't. Because they clearly believe that business & marketing at 23 years old with no internships = employment.

I'M the one finding exceptions to the rule??? Are all of the wrestlers MechE majors?

I was able to keep the clam chowder from coming out of my nose. :)

I read through this thread and figured it was one of those yucky ones that I won't bother visiting again but just as I left I saw dpod had replied so I figured I better head back in to check it out. It was worth it.

dpodoll does know how to market himself on GopherHole, doesn't he.

Every case is different, a lot of athletes take the easy way out but same goes for the non athletic student body. Some student athletes go the extra mile just like the students not playing sports.

I do believe that playing a sport is usually much more difficult than just going to school and having a job, 10 times is probably an exaggeration. Didn't think anyone would take that so literal.

And athletes only take intros...really? Obviously I know you're being a smart ass

I was being a smart-ass. I see your point. Bro-hug?

Yeah, but unless you get injured at work, you're just out of luck. A football player loses nothing educationally or "service oriented" when they go down. If the delivery boy breaks his leg skiing, he's just got no income until he can walk again, and somehow has to get to class on his own...

I won't pray, but I will hope he does. :)

Yeah, Dpod really knows how to market himself as a heel. He should've been a pro wrestler.

The funny part is you calling me a heel, considering that virtually everything you've posted in the 5 months has been wrong.

It's also funny how many people dangle from my balls on this site.

I dont dangle from your balls (i don't think) but i do appreciate it when you use facts to shut people up.

Despite all of the nonsense mentioned in this thread, I am just going to comment that I am hoping for the best for Andre McDonald. I hope he finds what makes him happy and can make it past any issues that may or may not be in his life.

The last time I heard the word "heel" was in It's a Wonderful Life--

Uncle Billy (to Mr. Potter): "Not all the heels are in Nazi Germany..."

Iced tea came out of my nose.

LMAO at this thread... straight class acts we have posting here, sheesh...

Are you for real? Your point is football players aren't smart. Go away. #ignorant
