SIAP: The shadiness of Findlay Prep

they got three player in the espn top 100 only one of them going to texas

I still believe Cory's brother Hurt our chances with landing Cory.

This pretty much makes the NCAA a complete joke. A basketball team$ taking correspondence courses, calls itself a Prep School. Why do the other prep Schools even play them. This pretty much makes all Prep Schools look dirty. Really, the President of the U of T should be fired right along withthe AD and Barnes over this mess.

Let's see here...

It looks like a Longhorn.
It walks like a Longhorn.
It smells like a Longhorn.
It bellows like a Longhorn.

I'll be damned, it might be a Longhorn.

Of course Findlay Prep is shady. They're located in Las Vegas and are provided for by a wealthy Texas alum. That was two strikes against them before they ever even suited up for their first official game.

Silly article. Don't be so quick to eat up what this says. Plenty of inaccuracies.

During the 2009-10 season we talked about the fact that Findlay Prep is not a school, rather it's a basketball program connected to Henderson... and the fact of the matter is that they still are. Same teachers were around this year as they had last year - the 'correspondence classes' stuff is b.s. Findlay Prep players are still taught by Henderson teachers.

If you want to talk about an advantage for a school, talk about UNLV not about Texas. Notice how all the players mentioned that went to or are going to Texas are from Canada? Look at Grassroots Canada and Texas before Findlay. Look at former Texas assistant Rodney Terry's recruiting efforts with kids from Canada before Findlay. (BTW, Terry just accepted the Fresno State head coaching position.)

The artilce was a little hard for me to read because the last few letters on the right side of the paragraphs were cut off, but I believe it says that Henderson is closed now. How are the players still taught by Henderson teachers if the school is closed?

Henderson is not closed. I promise you, the Findlay basketball players spend time in real classrooms at Henderson, with real life teachers standing there in the flesh lecturing. Henderson certainly does not operate what you'd call a 'traditional high school', but most would say they never have.

While I don't disagree that these sorts of basketball factories seem unsavory at best, you have to consider the source here (a nameless, faceless blog - not an "article" - for which I cannot find any sort of author or ownership . . . or even any other entries other than this one).

The school is not closed. That's just one of the inaccuracies, but certainly an important one.

I admit I know nothing about this.

But, I did find this newspaper article (and many more like it), which indicates that Henderson International DID close it high school last year. And, the official webpage of Henderson International says they only offer preschool thru 8th grade.

So, I'm not doubting, as you seem to know. Can you clarify where these kids are getting high school class time?

Just a quick note:

Obviously I knew going in that this was a faceless blog with tons of subjectivity interjected. I thought it was interesting nonetheless and if nothing else it has spurred discussion.

Everything in Las Vegas is shady then? That's a little harsh.

I'm guessing you may be one of those that are surprised that 2 million people actually LIVE in LV and that it's not JUST a strip of casinos in the middle of the desert?

You are doubting! I have already answered the question (I thought clearly?!) - "I promise you, the Findlay basketball players spend time in real classrooms at Henderson"... that means that they are getting high school class time at Henderson.

It's OK.. I've been doubted before. But like I said.. "I promise you" on this one.

I have already answered the question (I thought clearly?!) - "I promise you, the Findlay basketball players spend time in real classrooms at Henderson.

No, my question was WHERE are they getting this classroom time. You didn't answer that, other than to promise us they were in a classroom.

You said Henderson doesn't operate a traditional high school. That is an understatement. They don't operate one at all. So, the Findlay players are getting classroom time at a high school that doesn't exist? Do they just show up and get some tutoring in the middle school classrooms? I see why you say it is non-traditional.

I get an awesome visual with that

Yes, you question was WHERE are they getting this classroom time. To which I reminded you that I had already answered - again, I will quote it for you - "I promise you, the Findlay basketball players spend time in real classrooms at Henderson".

Notice the in real classrooms at Henderson? That is where. Can't be any clearer.

If you want to get freaked out over some basketball-related setups, there are plenty of diploma mills to spend your time on. I'd be far more concerned about the quality of education at a place like Stoneridge (where Ahanmisi went for a 5th year of prep), as compared to the education these kids receive from teachers at Henderson.

I'm not trying to be some pro-Findlay guy here.. I'm just saying the original blog post that was linked has a lot of B.S. in it and is silly... and that there are a lot worse things going on than Findlay...

GW, I like you, always have, but you're being really obfuscatory here (purposefully, it seems). How are they taking classes in Henderson if the high school is closed? If they are being taught by HS teachers employed by Henderson, in the Henderson building, then Henderson isn't really closed. Are they lying on their own webpage?

GW, you're obviously in tune to the prep school/recruiting scene across the country. Out of curiosity, can you name some of the more prominent prep schools (in addition to Stoneridge) that you have reason to believe are at least somewhat shady? There definitely are a lot of diploma mills out there. .. the amount of 'em is getting pretty sad. It's becoming ridiculously easy for some of the dumber athletes to acquire a HS diploma and the necessary "coursework" to attain their eligibility. Thanks in advance.

Actually, you could be quite a bit more clear. "At Henderson" isn't clear. I'll try to be more clear in my question since you seem to have the good insight. Where exactly and specifically are these guys are getting the lessons? Is it in a middle school classroom at Henderson? Is it at their elementary school? Is it at the high school building that is no longer offering courses? Is it with high school teachers? Is it in the gymnasium? The locker room? The parking lot? And, since you have a good idea of what's going on, how many hours per week would you think these guys are seeing these teachers "in Hendeson classrooms?"

I'm not trying to be difficult and I'm really not all that concerned one way or another about Findlay. I'm curious how they operate more than anything. You've got some insight it sounds like, so I'm asking for details to enlighten me.

I've already admitted I don't know jack about this stuff.

That question sounds like a set up.

I'm shocked, I tell you, shocked that 2 million people live in Las Vegas...

Of course I know that. I also know that Las Vegas actively advertises itself as a frontier town that loves to skirt the rules. Of course that's stereotyping. But it's one that Las Vegas embraces at every turn.

You bold the words, “exactly and specifically” and then say you’re not trying to be difficult? My answer is the same – and despite what you wrote, the answer was not “at Henderson”. The answer was “in real classrooms at Henderson”. Let’s see if this helps… Henderson is a school. Like many schools, it has classrooms. The Findlay players physically enter Henderson and sit down in a classroom. While in the classroom, Henderson teachers also enter the room and proceed to teach the Findlay players.

Sometimes I wish I still drank.

My apologies, but this isn’t something I’d comment on in a public forum in any great detail. (PS – I didn’t say I had reason to believe that Stoneridge is at least somewhat shady.)

- Henderson had three ‘campuses’ (two of which were down literally down the street from each other). They have consolidated into one location. Henderson still operates a school – it never closed.
- Henderson has teachers on its staff, including some teachers that taught high school students in past years. Some of these teachers still teach students in a high school program.
- The high school program includes Findlay players and one other student. An arrangement was agreed to under which Henderson will offer a high school curriculum to kids in the Findlay program. For this 2010-11 year, this high school curriculum was also offered to Henderson high school students who had completed their junior year of high school in 2009-10
- So… going forward, the plan is that Henderson will effectively run a high school program for kids in the Findlay program. Henderson will not offer this program to the paying public.

Henderson At-A-Glance

Location:

Henderson/Las Vegas, Nevada, USA

Grades:

Preschool - 8

So, they are lying on their own website? That tells me all I need to know about their little operation.

There are very few high schools which aren't diploma mills. If you didn't manage to get a high school diploma you most likely just stopped showing up to school. If you fail a certain math class, they'll find an easier math class for you to get the necessary credits. I'm satisfied with the quality of education at Henderson if the kids are getting the minimum act/sat to qualify for their scholarships.

The shady part is the possibility that the booster from texas is buying recruits.

So, they are lying on their own website? That tells me all I need to know about their little operation.

No, I don't take that as lying. Not even close. They don't run a high school for the public. Like I said, there are Henderson teachers that teach Findlay players.

Sometime I'll take you out to eat at KFC (not today, it's Lent). I often order the "double boneless filet box". It's nowhere to be found on the menu, but they all know what it is and have a key dedicated to it on their little registers. Please don't freak out on them, but I do hope you ask them why they are lying.

I know of hundreds of companies that operate one or multiple reportable segments... but they also own and operate small businesses which they simply never talk about publicly. Not in advertisements, public filings, their website, etc. Those damn liars!!!!

Dpdoll & GW

Ironically I found this thread to be quite a learning tool.

Dpdol, I am familiar with obfuscate and love the word. I had never seen or heard obfuscatory before. I can barely pronounce it.

Kudos to GW for bringing me up to speed on the "double boneless filet box". What the heck is it?

Do the lads at or near Henderson learn this much in one day?

:)

Not to jump into the foray here but I have to admit I was confused too. Henderson is a city, in which I live, so when you said Henderson my first reaction was that you were merely saying they were in class somewhere in the city.

Not to nitpick but it may have been more accurate to say Henderson International, or just HI to abbreviate?

Ogee,

I should also clarify my previous remarks to avoid confusion. If you took my original statement as an indictment of everything in the Las Vegas area as being corrupt, that was not my intent. In fact, a former co-workers' son commented on how pleasant living in the area is, especially during the summer. Rather, my intent was simply to point out that it wouldn't surprise me if they were indeed corrupt. I confess to not knowing one way or the other. Other than that, I can imagine that Las Vegas' reptuation is a bit of an annoyance to many of the locals.

If you read all the posts and you were confused, there are bigger issues for you. And what does Hawaii have to do with all of this?

Give it a try... it's amazing. Let me start with the 'other stuff': you get a biscuit, a side of your choice and a pop. The main course = the boneless filets. The Double-Down has two boneless filets, but then also cheese, bacon and other crap in the middle of it. It gets messy. Nothing wrong with it, it's just not my thing. The double boneless filet box provides you with just the chicken (which you can get in 'original' or some nasty 'healthier' option). You can use silverware (or KFC-ware including my favorite - the spork) or just pick up the food with your hands (sides can be an issue with no utensils, though). It's $7.50 with tax for the double boneless filet box. I believe the boneless filet box is $5.00 before tax.

Dang I'm hungry. And potentially insane.
