Minnesota

Wins: North Carolina, Rhode Island, Nevada, Maryland

Losses: Iowa, Michigan, USC, UCLA, Illinois, Rutgers, Penn State, Wisconsin

Record: 4-8 (1-8)

They have us starting 3-0 and then only 1 conference win. They must be assuming our QB1 is injured before the B1G season.

Also, they have Iowa winning 11(!) games

well iowa does play basically the JV version schedule in the B10 this year

I guess you have to pick someone to win and lose every game, but if MN wins 4 games, I'd be shocked.

I don't get the love for UCLA. 1-8 in conference is not going to happen.

to be fair, they've got UCLA going 2-7 in the B10

Go Gophers!!

so - after a little checking --

The author of this article appears to be a Michigan beat writer. clicking through his name, I found a series of articles about Michigan football - and articles covering the JJ McCarthy injury news for the Vikings.

now, he may be a good writer. I can't speak to that. all I know is that he is a Michigan beat writer. In essence, this is one of those articles where a team's beat writer profiles the other teams in the conference. take it for what you think it's worth.

That beat writer loves him some Iowa Hawkeyes

I don't get it. Fleck has a winning record with the Gophers including an 11-2 season and two 9-4 seasons. I can see 6-6, thinking more, but 4-8 is stupid
He also has three losing seasons. Lots of ?'s this season too.

I sure hope we don't go 4-8, but the big difference in what GH is projecting and everywhere else is that most are not sure what we get from Brosmer who has never taken a D-1 snap. On GH it is assumed that he will be great(and god hopes he will be) but if he isn't, 4-8 isn't crazy.

I don't think people are necessarily assuming Brosmer will be great, but he will almost certainly be an improvement over AK. If Brosmer can even be like non-2019 Morgan, that would be a big improvement.

If RB Darius Taylor is healthy and/or the next guys up are rocking it...

and

If QB Max Brosner is keeping his completion percentage in a respectable range and not turning the ball over...

then that's 6 win.

and

If the defense is stronger than average which we don't know

and

If the running backs add a dynamic catching element

then that could be more wins.

And if none of that, then that's called "last season when Taylor was out."

Yeah let’s hope so.

There seems to be too much talent for only 4 wins. I think people overestimate the PAC teams…I just think of Nebby when they came on board. Ducks will be legit but will the rest?

I’m think there are 5-6 games where it could be a toss up and some breaks will be the difference. 4-8 to 8-4 might only be a few plays difference.

If I was betting I’d go this order:
6 wins
5 wins
7 wins
8 wins
4 wins

Its not really. Its not fun, but from a national or other teams perspective the Gophers are not expected to do much. Lots of question marks and a tough schedule. I hope they prove everyone wrong.
If the Gophers go 1-8 in the Big Ten, I will eat my hat. That's a year 1 Brewster season.

It's not just can Brosmer succeed, it is also the ruTm mentality that makes it feel like we're running the single wing as we try to make every drive (90 yards or 20 yards) last 10 minutes in an effort to lull our opponents to sleep.

Will we have a competent OC performance this year is the bigger question to me. How AK does at Rutgers will be telling as well. I don't think he's Patrick Mahomes and we wasted him, but he was better than last year showed. We saw that at the end of 2022. So what happened?

If the fact that our conference schedule includes 9 conference opponents means that 1-8 or 2-7 is a realistic possibility, we are in bad shape. I think we will do much better than that. 4-5 would be mildly disappointing but not alarm bells, 3-6, would be a bad season, anything worse would be awful.

in all fairness, these national writers are not spending hours analyzing the Gopher roster. any regular on Gopher Hole probably knows more about the Gopher roster than any national writer. Maybe some of the people who cover the B1G know a little bit more.

But - here is the point - for a national writer, here is what they know about the Gophers:
*lost their starting QB
*added a transfer QB from an FCS school
*lost their well-respected DC
*hired a new DC who has never been a DC at the FBS level
*lost their best defensive player (Nubin) to the NFL
*lost their best receiving TE to the NFL
*no more B1G West Division, so a more difficult schedule
*best RB is injury-prone
*Fleck is seen as an ultra-conservative coach who runs a near-service academy offense

add it all up, and it's easy to understand why people are not predicting a better season.

Now, the national writers could be wrong. the Gophers could do a lot better than some of these predictions. but it's not a case of "they hate the Gophers." they're just making assumptions based on conventional wisdom.

Iowa has been working the entire
off-season on perfecting the
FAKE FAIR CATCH!

Couldn't find a good thread for this, but somewhat related...to anyone who likes podcasts, the 247 guys for USC and UCLA do their "Podcast of Champions" that I've found to be a really good listen. They're funny and have good, insightful interviews with all the 247 reporters for each team leading up to the season.

Agreed, I listened to one of their pods and they would be a good listen going into the USC & UCLA games. I think they've finally adjusted to the idea there in the B1G. It will be interesting to get their takes as they start to see the B1G week to week and how our 4 new additions are doing.
