Should the TCU game be a gold out?

I thought of this a few days ago, I think the TCU game should be a gold out. Not only do we want to show the nation what it means to be Gopher fans, but imagine how intimidating it would be for the TCU players (also some great photo opportunities)! We will be on the primetime national stage for a game for the first time in a while.

You may ask, "How are we going to pull that off? We have two main colors! Not just one like some other big ten teams!" Well it's easy, start advertising now. Come up with some witty shirt designs and sell them in the bookstore and Goldy's locker room. There will be a small percentage of people who won't do.it, but iI think we can get a good percentage of fans in gold attire for that game.

What do you all think?
 

Gold is clearly the color of choice for this game. Maroon and TCU purple are too close on the color spectrum whereas gold will clearly stand out.

I am all for doing something like a gold out but the ONLY way it will work is if you put a shirt on every seat in the stadium for people to put on at the game. We don't have the kind of fanbase that will all show up wearing the same color to a football game, we just don't. It can't be something you have to buy it has to be free and waiting for them when they get there, otherwise they will show up in the same array of colors we always get on gamedays.

This. This fan base can't handle something so easy.
 

Like ALL Gopher football gold outs, this would be a guaranteed gold out failure...

Unless...

ALL THREE of the following happened: largest gold out marketing/awareness campaign ever AND a gold tshirt over the back of every seat AND a perfect weather night for tshirts calm mid 70's.

With one or two of these conditions, it would fail like all the others. In fact I am not even 100% sure it would work even with all three conditions being met.

Guessing shirt sizes will be tough though. Maybe they could advertise over the summer and have gold game specific apparel for sale for those who will buy, but then also hand out t-shirts outside and inside the stadium before the game?
 

Offer a free bobblehead of Jerry to everyone that shows up for the game wearing a gold shirt.

I think all the season ticket holders should get t-shirts...could pick them up at the first game (voucher with the ticket mailing). A t-shirt costs about $3 when you get tons made, shouldn't be a big deal to include with season tickets.

The Air Force game was pretty cool with everyone in gold.

I don't think TCU will be intimidated by it (I can't imagine they really care what the fans are wearing) but I still think it would be a cool thing to try to pull off. It would look good on TV too.

MNVCGUY is spot on. This is the only way it has a chance of ever working is by putting a shirt on every seat. Even then it may not.
 



Back in the Metrodome days, I remember there was a promotion where all season-ticket holders got a free long-sleeved gold t-shirt at the first game of the season. I know they did this more than one time - I've got a couple of them, thanks to getting tickets through my boss.

But, as others have said, the trick is to get everyone to put them on.

I'm sure this would work wonders, but I can't imagine how hard it would be to convince Athletics to do this.

OKay, I may have been a bit optimistic with the intimidation part, but I think our team would get hyped seeing an all (or mostly) gold stadium. I can't remember how they pulled off the Air Force game (I was 13 at the time), can you remind me what they did? They could just do that again, with a little more advertising.

Well, then they should do that. I was just thinking that they would be more willing to do it if they could make some money on it as well. I just want to see that stadium be a sea of gold.

I suppose you're right, but if its advertised to be a gold out for a really long time, and then you show up and there's a gold shirt on your seat, or they are handing them out in the stadium, would you chose not to wear it? Basically make it so that fans have to make the conscious decision NOT to wear gold.

I don't think they gave out tshirts at the Air Force game. I think they just marketed like crazy that everyone should wear gold. Almost everyone did have gold on - and it was a nice night so it was easy to just wear a tshirt (not like when it's cold and no one can find a gold jacket).

So wouldn't that work again? Crazy amounts of advertising? They could also give out shirts in addition to help boost it. The weather should hopefully be nice enough for T-Shirts, since it will still be August.

....should be, but it won't. Coordination is not our fanbase's strongest attriubutes.

I don't recall that Air Force was supposed to be a gold out to be honest...

Regardless, the results of most gold outs is about the same as that.

TCU does purple/white outs for most (or all) games. And they do them fairly effectively. They do different patterns depending on the week (all white, all purple, even sections white/odd purple, home purple/away white, etc). I would be embarassed beyond belief for them to see our pathetic attempt at a gold out.

Instead they should do a maroon out since 60%+ of fans wear maroon anyway. Yes, it matches the seat and isn't night and day different from TCU's purple, but they would have a much greater chance of success.
 

You're talking about our fellow Minnesotans that will take a 50 cent garage sale item and ask: " Will you take 25 cents?" Hook up with Target and have 3 sizes med, large, X-large and have them for the fans at the gate. If the fans with children take the hype they can put their kids in gold.

Then you have the weather or should I say the temperature situation. While I have gold shirts I don't have gold jackets etc. I agree also that it won't work with our fan base. Look at the Wild, multiple color uniforms in the stands.
 

There has to be a ton of those gold colored "fire M-ason" t-shirts laying around somewhere?
 




Wait till the last home game of every year and have a 'white-out'.

Idk, I recall the blackout at the Barn this season against Ohio State going pretty well, and I don't think they gave out free shirts for it, granted basketball is a smaller crowd.
 

We got plenty of people to wear black to the OSU basketball game and I would think it would be much easier to market a gold out than a black out....
