I can't believe we don't have a Gopher alum/fan m(b)illionaire out there that doesn't want to give gobs of money to the program. They would have the stage and spotlight to themselves.

Actually I was wrong on this. Sanford was going to donate the $35 million for the naming rights for the new stadium for 20 years. The U decided to go with TCF Bank instead for the same price and duration. Sanford then gave $6 million for the Gophers HOF at the stadium because he liked Maturi.

There was also fallout surrounding a Sanford/Fairview merger and naming rights for the hospital 4 years later, which is when he said he was done donating here.

I had forgotten that Sanford did donate $6 million, but he also offered $35 million if the stadium was built for a low like $70 million. I had never heard that the U chose TCF over Sanford. If so, they made a poor deal because the initial TCF deal included a monopoly on ATM machines and preferential treatment for on campus branch offices.

And yes, the Fairview deal was poorly handled by both sides. Sanford wanted more than just naming rights. I can’t recall the whole deal, but many at the U were happy the deal fell through.

So he's no different than anyone else? The U of M should just be entitled to taking his millions of dollars from donors for nothing?

He still donated millions to the U. He's donated $2 billion to Sanford Health. He just donated $20 million for a new track at the University of South Dakota.

Pretty impressive for someone who 'never really wanted to give'. That sounds like a person the U, who never has enough money, especially for sports, should have kept happy.

I think a lot of his South Dakota donations are to try and improve his perception across the state because he made his entire fortune preying on low income folks with high interest rates. I really hope we can find someone better than him to be our big time donor. Would love for one of the local big time corporations to step up.
